Fat on holiday - SOS!

Ilovepearjuice · 30/08/2023 13:16

I’m off to Spain on holiday next week and my body confidence is at an all time low. I’m currently a size 18-20 and whilst my goal is to lose weight, I can’t do anything in 5 days!

I'm desperate to wear some casual day time things that are “normally” worn on holiday eg. shorts and T shirts, wide legged trousers etc, but I have an awful overhang belly from an gynae op when I was a teen and everything just looks crap. If I wear shorts with a tucked in top, I’m worried that my stomach is emphasised even more!

Any suggestions on clothes that would suit my very-much-apple shape (see pic) would be greatly appreciated.

My usual style is midi dresses, jeans with oversized jumpers, a bit bright, funky and “youthful” (I’m only 34!). I could just wear my usual midi dresses but I would like a more casual look during the day!

Thank you all! ❤️

Thank you. :)

Back in March a drunk person shouted “you’re a fat bitch” over and over at me on the street when I was standing alone waiting for a taxi, so I think my confidence was really knocked. I actually went up to him (he was with his friends) and told him off, saying how damaging and disrespectful it is to speak to a person like that, and he was visibly shocked, tried to apologise and tried to give me a hug (which I refused)! I appeared outwardly very strong in the moment as I wanted to encourage him to never do that to any other poor woman in the future, but in reality I went home and cried, and have been wearing baggier stuff ever since.

What an absolute hero you are OP. I mean it. When you're feeling rubbish about a bit of a belly just remember you did that and that sort of courage is worth 100 times more than a flat stomach.
On a practical note, the way your top is kind of blousing over your jeans in the picture is quite flattering imo so I'd try for a similar thing with shorts and tops. Alternatively I'd forget the casual look and go for the dresses you feel good in. I see women in the day time on holiday in gorgeous midis and maxis and think how lovely they look.

JFDIYOLO · 30/08/2023 15:17

Im of the larger persuasion and the last few summers I've gone with a long top/short dress, usually fitted at the waist underboobs which is generally the trimmest part, then wooshing out, loose over tum and bum, length to the best part of my legs IE past thighs and knees, worn over leggings, jeggings, jeans or loose linen trousers, pretty sandals, toenail polish, some big jewellery (earrings or necklace or bangle)

DeeplyMovingExperience · 30/08/2023 15:47

I stick with the dresses because they're more forgiving and a lot more comfortable. Especially when having lunch!

Trousers and shorts are very unflattering on me and I'm the same shape as you.

fizzandchips · 30/08/2023 15:49

Just back from holiday - there was every shape, every size around the pool. Some in ‘hold you in’ swimwear and others in the teeniest, tinniest bikinis. What I didn’t see was a single ‘normal’ body. There was a lady with a great figure she also had very obvious breast implants and lip filler. Another lady had a slim, sporty build; she had lots of scars on her legs from numerous operations. What I’m trying to say is please don’t spend a single moment worrying about your body, just enjoy your holiday.

thankf82 · 30/08/2023 15:50

Cycling shorts and oversized tees!
This style looks for better on people who are bigger rather than thin.

Also don't give a fuck about how you look as nobody else will care, I'm at my biggest just now and not long back from holiday and I felt fine. Nobody spends thousands to go away with their family to care if the person on the next sunbed has a belly on them.

LakeTiticaca · 30/08/2023 15:58

Wide leg knee length shorts and a floaty hip.length top

jenny38 · 30/08/2023 15:59

Just got back from holiday, I'm also apple shape- during the day I would wear cotton cami top, loose flared type, then cotton shorts with a straight ish leg, to balance out the top. Fatface and esprit both do cotton shorts/ chino shorts.
Evening- midi or maxi in a cotton fabric, with chub rub shorts in underneath (I like the sloggi ones) or straight leg crop trousers with a longish cami top.
Swimwear- visit bravissimo and get fitted for something that suits you and makes you feel confident.

cantstaymadatyou · 30/08/2023 16:01

You’ll be fine. I recently came back from Spain and there were all sorts of shapes and sizes.

I have lipoedema and my legs are horrible, so normally I sweat it out in leggings. This year I just thought fuck it and wore nice culottes and even managed to wear some swim shorts to walk from the apartment to the beach. That’s huge for me.

In a few years you’ll probably look back and wonder what you were so self conscious about.

cheezncrackers · 30/08/2023 16:02

If you have good legs, wear shorts. I'm a pear shape and have always HATED my thighs, which are always fat, even when the rest of me is slim. But I have a good waist and boobs, so I show those off while hiding my legs! In other words, choose clothes that skim over the bits you don't want to show off, while showing off the bits you like.

And don't worry about being bigger than you'd like. People of all shapes and sizes go on holiday. Just go and enjoy yourself.

christmaspudding43 · 30/08/2023 16:08

It doesn't really make it any better, but the bloke shouting at you was not about your size. It's sadly about his attitude to women. He would never have shouted that to a man, but also you might find him shouting something about hair (red/frizzy/short), boobs (flat/saggy/big), bum (big/saggy/flat), you get the picture. Like I said, it doesn't really make it better, but it's not about you specifically, he would have found something with any woman, so disregard his ridiculous comments and try and wear what you want.

I'm short, very busty, very pale and not toned. I went on holiday recently with 3 lovely friends, all of whom I would say have better figures than me and you know what they all have insecurities too. Wear what you want to wear and what makes you feel good. Shorts and camis don't make me feel good but flowy v neck dresses do so I don't make myself wear the shorts and camis, even though there would be nothing wrong with me doing so! I guess what I'm trying to say is you are beautiful whatever you wear but why not choose the things that make you feel great.

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/08/2023 16:20

Might be a bit late now but I had some great shorts for holiday from Tu, striped linen, above the knee, paper bag waist for a tuck

bert3400 · 30/08/2023 16:28

I feel your pain, I'm off to Ibiza on Friday for a girls weekend away. I've put on 2st in the last year and non of my clothes fit me, not even my shorts . Feeling really frumpy and we are booked to go to a famous beach club on the island ... dreading it . But I'm sure no one will pay attention to me and my roly bits . I hope you have a lovely holiday,😀

This type of top works well, and it's long enough to cover your tummy.
Spain is really hot in August, I'd try to find a loose sundress, like this orthis and then a very thin linen or cotton shirt to wear as a cover up, and then shorts rather than trousers. I like these FatFace ones.
Have a lovely time!

I have the same overhang after multiple stomach surgeries. Large 12” lateral scar. Am also your size. I tend to go for dresses, which stop just under the boob. This dress is thin and cool and hides the big tum.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 30/08/2023 17:09

I’m on holiday right now and have been feeling pretty bad about myself as I have put on a lot of weight. My bikinis are all too small and didn’t want to shell out for bigger ones, so wearing old one pieces. Also only bought minimal clothes (1 x pair of shorts) as want to try and force myself to lose weight by being bored of the few things that still fit.

I wish I had bought a bigger bikini and at least one more pair of shorts as I am melting and there are people of all shapes and sizes on the beach and out for dinner.

Honestly, wear whatever you like, no one will judge, everyone always says it, but it is actually true! I get so hung up about what I look like and the MN “fact” that us brits are all porkers while people from other countries are all toned and lithe…but it’s nonsense!!!

HelpaFriend85 · 30/08/2023 17:11

I was at the hairdressers yesterday and the lady doing my hair was a big girl. Much bigger than you. She wore a gorgeous dress with a low front and short. All I was mesmerised by was her perfect skin. It was flawless on her legs, chest and arms. I have badly scarred skin and thin hair. Everyone has something. Wear what you would like OP. I saw plenty of larger women on the beach with flawless skin, body confident in their bikinis.

Sickofchangingmyfuckingusername · 30/08/2023 17:23

Similar body shape- I wear plain shorts- not too long, vest like fitted tee shirt and usually a very light cotton shirt open. The front sides of the shirt obscure my ample tum and tee shirt emphasises my figure.
Enjoy your holiday!

Agree...channel your inner diva girl, you look absolutely fine! What's a bit of overhang?! Just drink lots of cocktails, you won't care.! I wear bright midi dresses rather than shorts, much more comfortable, although i do wear lightweight chub rub shorts underneath, amazon x oh and make up with bright lipstick. Don't forget your setting spray x

I am an apple shape and find these relaxed fit cotton tshirts from Rapanui useful, with shorts. They are not thin cotton and forgiving on the belly. Women's Relaxed Fit T-shirt | 3 Pack (rapanuiclothing.com)

Those are ace and a bargain. Wish I could find a v neck equivalent, better for us apples.

FartyBrainedHippo · 30/08/2023 18:07

I'm just back from holiday, and am a size 20, after losing three stone. I packed every type of swimwear possible and out of it all wore a bikini every day - and I was far from the only person my size or bigger doing so.

My favourite outfit turned out to be linen shorts and linen top in the same colour (navy or white), and loose linen dresses with sloggi long legged pants underneath. I would always have worn denim shorts before, but found them far too hot, unflattering and a bit scruffy.

I read something on here before I went, saying in the unlikely event that anyone has an issue with the way you look, then that's THEIR issue, not yours; and it really did change my outlook. Sounds like you realised that a while back!

Have a great holiday!

ShouldGoToBed · 30/08/2023 18:15

I have a big belly and skinny legs, and got some nice shorts from Sainsbury’s that are quite flattering and comfy. The ones I got are sold out in most sizes but they have other nice relaxed styles - these could be cute https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc143081071

Not sure if these would work as they’re quite fitted - not as fitted as they look on the model though - but they’re great fabric and are completely indestructible but look quite smart, and are very comfy with the elastic aged panel at the back. https://acaioutdoorwear.com/products/mid-length-trek-shorts-deep-navy?variant=39940659773529
