Would you wear a slip dress to a wedding?

Asking as a relative has asked me if their choice is OK. I am saying no, I don't think a slip dress with straps is acceptable and sleeves are required as it's a church.

She is saying it's fine in this day and age and she just needs to make sure her pants have no vpl.

No I wouldn't wear one, it's not appropriate for a church wedding.

ohcrums · 22/08/2023 20:28

I was really surprised by the choice.but she was surprised by my surprise!

No, not in church.

StupidHip · 22/08/2023 20:30

I think bearing in mind brides are often barely dressed, even in church these days, vertainyl bare shoulders seem OK, the dress is fine. I know it's all wrong, but it probably does depend a bit on the age and build of the wearer i.e. exactly how much flesh is on show.

Early 20s, slim build

I might suggest a cardi..

Lots of jackets about on trend.

Cardi not so much!

Seeing most 20 something fashion is to bare all, she’s probably quite modest.

OwlBasket · 22/08/2023 20:36

Apart from the appropriateness or otherwise, she’ll be bloody freezing in church without something to put on

GreyTS · 22/08/2023 20:37

Oh god yes! And I have, to all kinds of weddings, it's my go to wedding outfit, slip dress and kimono, I'm 45 if it matters

Ooh a kimono might work. Are they "in" with the yoof?

Any tips for making it look less like a nightie and robe combo? Perhaps jewellery I'm guessing. And the right combo.

JMAngel1 · 22/08/2023 21:33

of course she can.

Niftyswiftie · 22/08/2023 21:35

I think it's fine.

Wakintoblueskies · 22/08/2023 21:37

Absolutely. She might need a cover for her shoulders - a jacket.
Heels and jewellery and she will look great (and better than most at the reception!).

AllOfThemWitches · 22/08/2023 21:41

Lol is this your daughter by any chance? I think it's fine anyway

No haha! I think it's probably not my place to say anything to her. Maybe I should nudge mum to check so she doesn't get a surprise on the day.

I thought churches were a bit strict on arms abs cleavage

OP posts:
HeddaGarbled · 22/08/2023 21:51

She’s seen all those photos from the recent Beckham wedding which most of the women attended in their (very expensive, silk) nighties.

inevitablytired · 22/08/2023 21:51

At recent weddings I've been to it is pretty common! Might be good to have something extra to cover her shoulders just for warmth though.

Ok you didn't mention cleavage - how much is on show is important. But slip dresses aren't usually low cut?

UsingChangeofName · 22/08/2023 22:11

Well no, I wouldn't, but I guess your question is for people a lot younger than me. I wouldn't wear what looks like either an underslip or a nightie out anywhere.

The odd thing here, is that she asked you, but then isn't happy with your answer.
I mean, the fact she asked you in the first place means she must either have doubts herself, or someone has already told her it isn't suitable wedding attire. So why is she now objecting to your opinion ?

madeinmanc · 22/08/2023 22:39

95% of people have no idea what is appropriate in a church because they've hardly ever been to one. Anyway, go with the "cold" angle because this happens to be true, even if it's not the real reason for covering up.

Totaly · 22/08/2023 23:43

But slip dresses aren't usually low cut?

I picture a love V neck spaghetti straps but tight on the body with a sheen material. So literally a summer nightdress.

Totaly · 22/08/2023 23:45

I picture a cowl/fold on chest area type dress, mid length, thicker material with a sheen.

I suppose we need a picture of the actual dress.

She was showing me because she wanted to know if it was ok or too bridesmaidy

So I let her know it's nothing like the bridesmaids' dresses
