Would you wear a slip dress to a wedding?

Asking as a relative has asked me if their choice is OK. I am saying no, I don't think a slip dress with straps is acceptable and sleeves are required as it's a church.

She is saying it's fine in this day and age and she just needs to make sure her pants have no vpl.

The top part is like this one:

It's not this one or this colour.

Of course it's ok. It's extremely old fashioned to think you can't show shoulders in a church.

Totally fine. Im 50. Had a church wedding myself and wore a strapless dress. I think the picture you posted is a very pretty, wedding-appropriate dress.

NutellaEllaElla · 23/08/2023 06:33

Of course it's fine! She just might be cold.

ohcrums · 23/08/2023 06:36

Ok thank you everyone! I'll leave her be! I might throw in a "I'm wearing a smart jacket with mine as church may be cold" and leave it be :)

Thanks all!

It's fine - she just needs to remember her bra and a very soft cardigan or v-neck jumper. Not a jacket.

Wakintoblueskies · 23/08/2023 09:58

It’s lovely. Something to keep her warm (practical).

DrMarshaFieldstone · 23/08/2023 10:11

I wouldn't, but plenty would, and it's impossible to say whether it's appropriate without knowing the denomination or culture of the church. There are conservative churches where you would be literally turned away at the door in that dress.

Assuming a relaxed, liberal church my main warning would be that it will be COLD and she presumably won't be able to wear a bra. Nipple pasties would be a wise move.

JaneJeffer · 23/08/2023 14:14

No. Tell her to get a shawl.

Janieforever · 23/08/2023 14:17

Yes totally. She’s early 20s and slim , something maybe in case she gets cold, but she will look lovely.

almostoverthehill · 23/08/2023 14:26

Maybe a pashmina just in case it’s chilly

Growlybear83 · 23/08/2023 14:41

I think it's very disrespectful to wear a skimpy dress and to have uncovered shoulders in church. She may well not be religious herself, but should have respect for the church and bride and groom, who presumably are religious if they have chosen a church wedding.

escapingthecity · 23/08/2023 14:44

Inappropriate to a church wedding unless she has some sort of jacket.

Nipple pasties, brilliant 🤭

I imagine that most churches would be overjoyed to have more than 10 people in the congregation for a change, and not be too bothered what anyone is wearing
