Would you wear a Dry Robe as a coat?

Just back from my holiday by the sea where I have seen lots of people wearing Dry Robes. They’ve mainly been on the beach after surfing or swimming but I’ve seen a fair few in the town being worn as long coats. I really like them especially the camo ones with the pink lining but just not sure if I would look a total twat as I’m definitely not a wild swimmer and would be wearing it for dog walking and just generally.

Lots of people here wearvthem around and about, but we are by the sea. I wear mine to walk yo the beach, so to look at me people wouldn't know if I was intending to swim at some point or not!

mraladdinsir · 22/08/2023 17:27

Yes they are amazingly warm and waterproof. So cosy. I love mine for wet dog walks!

CrotchetyQuaver · 22/08/2023 17:32

Yes I do and so does my daughter, they make excellent coats

Laura23FE · 22/08/2023 17:33

I wear mine for dog walking .. it’s great in winter and keeps me warm and dry :)

OffOnMyHols · 22/08/2023 17:37

Oh wonderful thank you. I really really like them but live nowhere near the sea and I’ve read negative things online so just a bit wary. Too much money to spend for it to sit in the wardrobe because I’m embarrassed.

I was going to, but recently I’ve seen a lot of chavvy people wearing them. Put me right off. It’s the new Burberry cap unfortunately.

Paperbagsaremine · 22/08/2023 17:39

I have done. Crucially it can fit on top of another coat - very useful when it gets really cold!
But a) I did originally get it for vaguely athletic related reasons b) I am old and DGAF
The thing is, they're built like tanks and last forever, so I'm sure I'm not the only one who got one when they were very active and years later, old and frayed, still have it!

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 22/08/2023 17:39

theyve Replaced the Canada goose jackets round here, for the Range Rover mums. Neither the Range Rover or the dry robe are used for what they were originally intended.

thats no judgement. In the same way the joule quilted jacket put you in one “crew”, gym wear another, the dry robe another.

i think salt rock and dub design do their own now

PictureConsequences · 22/08/2023 17:41

I don't live by the sea and a few people around me wear them for dog walks.

justasoul · 22/08/2023 17:48

I live by the sea and it seemed very popular in the nearest town’s Tesco last winter.

tartlets · 22/08/2023 17:52

I live on a Welsh hill farm, I have a range of them for dog walking, farm work and walking the kids down to the bus in all weathers (we don't fire up the pickup just to ferry them to the bus at the bottom of the hill- they walk regardless!) kids all have them too- they wear them instead of a standard school coat.

Toasty, waterproof and wind proof. Not stylish but then I would never wear it anywhere that I would deem a 'jeans occasion' I only wear them when it's a 'leggings and hoody' occasion.

I have to have bright coloured ones from Element Karbon- the Ekosy, I spend a lot of time leaping into hedges and out of the way of tractors so the brighter the better 😂

Swearwolf · 22/08/2023 17:56

My kids play rugby and last winter a lot of parents were wearing them on the sidelines!

StupidHip · 22/08/2023 18:00

I've got another brand that I wear a lot in Winter, sometimes over another coat.

I wouldn't wear it to work, but often for casual things if I'll be outdoors much.

Softpebbles · 22/08/2023 18:41

If you wanted one with less branding Swimzi do one which is a little less in your face!

Warm, waterproof and can pull the waist in. Mine lives in the car for all sorts of eventualities!

Hobbitlover · 22/08/2023 18:46

I have the equidry versions & wear them around the horses/rugby/walking the dog/if it's cold & wet.

LovefromPickles · 22/08/2023 18:49

I’m closer to London than the sea and yes agree it’s becoming a bit of a thing to wear them as coats

mickgravey · 22/08/2023 19:05

Some of the school mums wear them - we are in the absolute middle of the country so at least 100 miles to any beach

I can't explain why but it annoys me.

This is completely my problem I know 😂

BlowDryRat · 22/08/2023 19:30

I wear mine at DS' football matches. I wouldn't just wear it randomly as a coat though, unless the weather was particularly bad and I was going to be standing around outside for a long time.

sauvignonplonk1 · 22/08/2023 19:49

I wear mine for dog walking, best thing ever!

youveturnedupwelldone · 22/08/2023 19:50

Lots of people dog walk in them round here, town, seaside and country!

OffOnMyHols · 23/08/2023 14:11

I have ordered one!! All the positive replies encouraged me so I will be wearing one for pretty much every outdoor occasion this winter even though I live a long way from the coast and do no outdoor sports 😁

RitzyMcFitzy · 23/08/2023 14:18

No.

Purely a post-swim thing for me.

SeriouslyStressed · 23/08/2023 14:19

I have one from Aldi, very practical and not branded!

MidnightMeltdown · 23/08/2023 14:22

Interesting. I do water sports and was thinking about getting one for that purpose, but I'd never considered as even remotely stylish!

Gnittensmum · 23/08/2023 14:43

Check out DRY robe wankers page on FB and then make your mind up.
