Would you wear a Dry Robe as a coat?

Just back from my holiday by the sea where I have seen lots of people wearing Dry Robes. They’ve mainly been on the beach after surfing or swimming but I’ve seen a fair few in the town being worn as long coats. I really like them especially the camo ones with the pink lining but just not sure if I would look a total twat as I’m definitely not a wild swimmer and would be wearing it for dog walking and just generally.

I care not a jot about being a 'dry robe wanker' so will continue to wear mine this winter when walking my dogs. It's practical, warm and dry so what's not to like. Mine was from seasalt and was £170 reduced down to £50. Bargain.

ChilliPB · 23/08/2023 15:02

I have one for wild swimming. I don’t wear it for anything else - surely there are plenty of warm/waterproof coats for general wear?

SeriouslyStressed · 23/08/2023 15:23

Gnittensmum · 23/08/2023 14:43

Check out DRY robe wankers page on FB and then make your mind up.

Why would I check that out? So I can feel a sense of superiority 🤣 ? It sounds very small minded and I DGAF what any random stranger thinks of me in public

MissisBee · 23/08/2023 15:30

Round here everyone wears them to walk their dogs and the primary school staff wear them in the playground! (Although they tend to wear a different brand that belongs to an ex-teacher)

AlrightJulia · 23/08/2023 18:04

If I'm wearing mine in a shop then it's because I've been in the sea and am now naked underneath Grin I wouldn't just wear it for fun to Asda.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 23/08/2023 18:07

Absolutely not - and I have one.

I don't use it for its originally purpose tbf, but I only wear it when walking on the beach, or on dog walks when it's hammering it down

Divebar2021 · 23/08/2023 18:08

No way would I wear it - I own one but there are far better options of coats that’s are waterproof and warm for dog walking.

WoolyMammoth55 · 23/08/2023 18:11

My friend who has a dryrobe IS a sporty athletic type but doesn't wild swim that I know of.

She is mid-30s, very trendy, asymmetric haircut, fairly punky, very beautiful. She wears it as a coat all winter, everywhere.

She looks like "punky Kate Moss at a festival" in hers and it's a very good look for her!

But I am a decade older and much fatter so would not copy her for those reasons :)

The phrase 'wild swimming' should be illegal.

Discwriter · 23/08/2023 18:12

I saw a woman wearing one at the airport yesterday and assumed she will swim at her destination and wants to save space not packing it in a suitcase. Didn't realise it's a "thing"!

pucezigzag · 23/08/2023 18:12

I use mine mostly for camping and paddle boarding but I have used it as a coat in really bad weather. I wouldn't go to the pub in it as it's bulky but running errands then yes

I can only apologise, but I find it so sphincter-clenchingly pretentious that I feel compelled to speak up when I see it mentioned.

cheezncrackers · 23/08/2023 18:43

Ugh - they're ubiquitous round where I live (posh part of the country). A couple of my friends wear them for dog walking or for watching their DC play sports. I have, in the past, said something like 'Goodness, have you been swimming in the lake?' It's like they don't make waterproof coats any more .. oh wait!

Haha 😂 I don’t think you’re the only one to be fair.

JazzyBBG · 23/08/2023 18:54

I have one, a Lucy Locket one. It is amazing. When it's cold I could live in it. Intend to wear it o the train to work as well!

Rockandrollfangirl · 23/08/2023 19:19

I really want one but I have no where to wear it

Divebar2021 · 23/08/2023 19:41

Using the term wild swimming might be pretentious but it’s not as pretentious as pretending to be a “wild swimmer” in a dry robe.

Riapia · 23/08/2023 19:53

mickgravey · 22/08/2023 19:05

Some of the school mums wear them - we are in the absolute middle of the country so at least 100 miles to any beach

I can't explain why but it annoys me.

This is completely my problem I know 😂

Does it annoy you to see people who have never been involved in anything sporty wearing trainers?

Yes it does.

The phrase "wild swimming" is very irritating.

I wouldn't wear a dry coat either to go swimming or anything else. I do occasionally swim in the sea. I've managed so far without one of these.

indyocean · 23/08/2023 20:12

I think it looks daft but school mums in my area (30 miles from the coast) love em

SeriouslyStressed · 23/08/2023 20:17

This whole thread is full of small minded people desperately trying to show that they are somehow "better" than people who choose a certain type of outer garment. It's full on curtain twitching petty judgment.

Seriously, who cares what other people wear or what other people think of their clothing choice?

And what is the opposition to the phrase "wild swimming"? It's an accurate description for a popular activity. What else would you call it? "Open water swimming" is also used, is that somehow better? Wild swimming is less syllables so it's quicker to say.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 23/08/2023 20:19

I guess they might be the new Uggs. I don't know if anyone who uses them for their original purpose

Bichonmum · 23/08/2023 20:24

I've recently bought one for when we go camping and the walking the dogs.

Not tried it out yet but we're off camping soon so will be taking it then.

I work in early years in a nursery that’s huge on outdoor play , all the young ones have dry robes, this year I’ve treated myself , not to an actual dry robe but very similar. It’s so warm and cosy.
