Would you wear a Dry Robe as a coat?

Just back from my holiday by the sea where I have seen lots of people wearing Dry Robes. They’ve mainly been on the beach after surfing or swimming but I’ve seen a fair few in the town being worn as long coats. I really like them especially the camo ones with the pink lining but just not sure if I would look a total twat as I’m definitely not a wild swimmer and would be wearing it for dog walking and just generally.

"wild swimming" certainly communicates something.

And you being ‘irritated’ by other people’s choice of language, and that being your main contribution to this thread definitely communicates something about you (clue: it’s not great).

I'm confused with all the comments about not living near the coast. I could be wearing one in Asda after a swim without being near the sea
Reservoir is my usual place!

Why not just get dressed?

They're very ugly.

Shady23 · 24/08/2023 00:48

@NatashaDancing I'll be dressed, I just wear it home as I get really cold sometimes after a swim
So I use it to change then put it on over my clothes to walk back. Yes it's ugly but when I've been in cold water it's perfect

illiterato · 24/08/2023 03:27

I think they absolutely come into their own as coats at stuff where there’s a lot of standing round like outside sports matches. I got DD a “Pri-robe” for netball and rugby tournaments and it makes a massive difference and can just stick it on over playing kit.

Bichonmum · 24/08/2023 05:39

@NatashaDancing there designed so you can get dressed while your wearing them.

I wear mine with crocs for camping. Who cares if people think they're ugly as long as I'm warm, dry and comfortable then I couldn't care less what other people think.

WillWeSeeTheSunAgain · 24/08/2023 06:30

I've just had to Google dry robe to see what you were all talking about

They are basically just a long big lined coat with a hood it looks like? Not sure how people dog walk in them. Aren't they too warm and flappy?

Can see they would be brilliant on a beach

Eminybob · 24/08/2023 06:39

I also just had to Google.
I like them. Quite fancy one myself now, despite not living by the sea. For that price I would wear it every day from October to April!

To be honest, if I had seen someone wearing one (probably have just not noticed) then I would just think it was an oversize coat and think nothing of it.

ThePoshUns · 24/08/2023 07:15

I think they look naff unless you're wearing them for sport.
I live in a seaside village and see whole families wearing them just to walk to the pub.

ThePoshUns · 24/08/2023 07:26

I have a cheap non branded one for surfing. Don't wear it other than for that.

I care not a jot about being a 'dry robe wanker' so will continue to wear mine this winter when walking my dogs. It's practical, warm and dry so what's not to like. Mine was from seasalt and was £170 reduced down to £50. Bargain.

If it’s from sea salt it’s not a dry robe (the brand) presumably? Just a nice big coat.

The only thing I find objectionable about dry robes is the huge branding on the back, because it’s obviously of utmost importance any casual passer-by must be made aware that you are wearing a dry robe. (if the hot pink and camo didn’t give it away).

The only people I see wearing them are walking small dogs or children in suburbia, when it’s not raining.

UncleBryn · 24/08/2023 07:31

I wouldn't be without mine. I wear it for watching the kids play sport, walking the dog, beach etc. They are quite heavy so wouldn't be my choice to wear it as a normal coat unless it's absolutely chucking it down. Mine lives in the boot of the car so I always have it on me and in case I ever break down. The kids and my hubby all have one for the same uses.

Dreemhouse · 24/08/2023 07:34

I have one that I use for getting changed after sea swimming. I would never have thought to wear it as a coat until I saw a lady in Tesco wearing one, and our Tesco is always so cold and I thought what a good idea! Not specifically to wear to Tesco but I imagine it would be very cosy to take the dog out for a walk in.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2023 07:44

See them a lot around here, normally teamed with a tracksuit.

Wiennetta · 24/08/2023 07:45

NatashaDancing · 24/08/2023 00:24

Why not just get dressed?

They're very ugly.

The whole point of them is they are a changing robe - they are roomy enough that you can get dressed inside the coat if you have no access to changing rooms. And they’re warm for after a cold swim. Why would you use one and then get changed into another coat to pop into the shops after a swim or whatever? They’re not intended to be an item of beauty, they’re functional.

User12340000 · 24/08/2023 07:53

I've got one, I tend to only wear it on the beach after I've got out of the water or when we go camping where it comes into it's own when sat outside when it gets cold in the evenings.

I've seen a few dog walkers wear them when it's tipping it down and that's about it.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/08/2023 07:59

Clearly I've been living under a rock, as I've never heard of them or noticed anyone wearing them! I can't see anything offensive in how they look though.

I can't think that I'd have much use for one tbh. When I do outdoor swimming I just get dressed afterwards. They look too big and cumbersome for dog walking and I suspect would be too warm once I was warmed up from walking. I have a really good down jacket which is already too warm for all but the very coldest weather of the year.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/08/2023 08:04

It's not changing it to another coat though, is it? Because a dryrobe isn't a coat.

I do find it bizarre when I see people doing the school run/walking around Tesco in them. Especially when it's not particularly cold or so much as drizzling.

LoveLabradors · 24/08/2023 08:14

I have seen them at the coast occasionally. I get they are probably really practical. I already have good waterproof dog walking coats.
If they do become “the” coat of choice over the grotesque symbol of animal suffering that is Canada Goose then that can only be a good thing. I despise that brand and those who blithely wear it knowing the cruelty. Sick of the sight of them. I will take a dry robe craze anyday.

waterlego · 24/08/2023 08:16

I have one and wore it loads last winter, especially for dog walking but also sometimes around the house as we were trying not to use our heating 😂 (I got an Oodie type thing eventually for indoor wear!)

I live right by the sea- it’s about 400m from my front door- but I hardly ever go in it. I don’t care if people think Dry Robes are only for swimmers, or are ugly or chavvy or ridiculous or whatever. Yeah, it’s a gigantic, ugly coat and it kept me so warm and dry last winter. I’ll be wearing it again frequently this winter (and if my wearing it annoys a few random passers-by, even better).

Wiennetta · 24/08/2023 08:17

Oh, isnt it? Says you? Clearly it functions as a coat - as an extra layer.

I wouldn’t pack a dry robe and a coat if I was going out swimming. Especially if I’m walking down to the beach! It’s much easier to wear the dry robe there, use it for changing and just keep it on at the end. I wouldn’t be that motivated to take another item of clothing to avoid offending you when I pop to Tesco after my swim…! 🤣🤣

2chocolateoranges · 24/08/2023 08:18

When you’re working outdoors during winter with children for 6hrs a day, you wear whatever keeps you warm and I know my colleagues who have dry robes were much warmer than me last year.

im Passed the age of being concerned about what others think of me too,

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/08/2023 08:27

@Wiennetta nope, not says me - says dryrobe.

HateTheView · 24/08/2023 08:30

Might consider getting one for when I pop to the local Co-op, their air conditioning is on another level!
