Would you wear a Dry Robe as a coat?

Just back from my holiday by the sea where I have seen lots of people wearing Dry Robes. They’ve mainly been on the beach after surfing or swimming but I’ve seen a fair few in the town being worn as long coats. I really like them especially the camo ones with the pink lining but just not sure if I would look a total twat as I’m definitely not a wild swimmer and would be wearing it for dog walking and just generally.

I have one but can’t imagine wearing it other than to/from swimming. They’re very heavy.

To the person who said they wear theirs paddle boarding- you don’t mean on the paddle board? They’re really dangerous if there’s any risk of falling in.

@Wiennetta nope, not says me - says dryrobe.

@aperolspritzbasicbitch oh like where they describe on their own website that their ‘dry robe advance’ is big enough to get changed under but versatile enough to be worn as a coat or jacket 🤣🤣 I can’t imagine being bothered by what other people wear as an outer layer.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/08/2023 08:45

@Wiennetta i mean, you seem equally, if not more, pressed about peoples opinion on you wearing them. Relax.

@aperolspritzbasicbitch aww ‘relax’ thanks ☺️
I actually don’t even wear it to go shopping 😂 I just find it funny that you’re annoyed that people wear it as a coat and then you were wrong about how it’s marketed - as a coat 🤣 🤣 If you’re going to complain about things maybe next time get your facts right 😉

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/08/2023 08:57

@Wiennetta hun, I've got more important things to do with my time than trawl through the product description of something I'm not planning to buy.
Also, I said I found it bizarre, not annoying, so perhaps you should read comments as keenly as you read their website.

This is actually really important. Don't wear them on the water, if you fall in they can drag you down really fast. British Rowing have banned coxes from wearing them in the boat.

And what is the opposition to the phrase "wild swimming"?

Personally? It makes you sound like a pretentious twat.

It's an accurate description for a popular activity.

Is it? Because I imagine someone trying to swim whilst their arms and legs flail around in a "wild" manner.

What else would you call it?

Swimming obviously!

And to answer the original question. No, I wouldn't wear one as a normal coat. Unless I also bought a VW Transporter to go with it ... 😉

Oops, bolded the wrong bits of my posts there!

I wear mine over the top of a Seasalt Janelle for playground duty and rigging my son's boat in the very depths of winter.

I personally would not wear it as a general coat because I'm not keen on the swishy noise it makes and it's annoyingly bulky. It's only for when the alternative is death by exposure.

😂😂 I didn’t ‘trawl through the product description’ it’s on Dryrobe’s front page!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/08/2023 09:39

It's not changing it to another coat though, is it? Because a dryrobe isn't a coat.

I'm curious - in what way, in terms of its physical properties' is it not a coat though? It's an outer garment with a hood, which keeps you warm and dry, designed to be worn outdoors, isn't it? Sounds like a coat to me.

If it’s from sea salt it’s not a dry robe (the brand) presumably? Just a nice big coat.

The only thing I find objectionable about dry robes is the huge branding on the back, because it’s obviously of utmost importance any casual passer-by must be made aware that you are wearing a dry robe. (if the hot pink and camo didn’t give it away).

The only people I see wearing them are walking small dogs or children in suburbia, when it’s not raining.

Perhaps its just a changing robe then https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/exploring-waterproof-oversized-coat

Oh yes, they make a really swishy noise. I'd forgotten as I haven't worn it for a few months. My cats get freaked out by the noise.

Peony654 · 24/08/2023 11:36

Gnittensmum · 23/08/2023 14:43

Check out DRY robe wankers page on FB and then make your mind up.

This. I'd never wear my dry robe (cheap version) unless I was going to or from a swim. They are so unflattering, and not warm.

Gnittensmum · 24/08/2023 16:49

Dry Robe is made where I live. It was a robe for surfers to get dressed under when cold. They’ve been very clever with their marketing though and now it is essentially a coat worn by mums in crocs/new balances walking some type of doodle mix whilst sporting expensive highlights no where near a beach.

Dry Robe Wankers on FB is very funny, judgy, but funny. Anyone who gets their arse vaguely in a tangle over a robe/coat is a Dry Robe Wanker, if they own one or not.

MissingMoominMamma · 24/08/2023 16:55

I use my Wild Moose one for post swim, and also for walking the dogs in the rain.

Useful garment, but it’s definitely not a fashion thing!

Jekiffe · 25/08/2023 04:02

Wild swimming (like wild camping) is an actual thing I thought. It means swimming outdoor without any facilities that you might usually expect to be able to use. In cold weather you do need different kit to swim like that and not get hypothermic afterwards. So YABU in this context of needing warm layers it’s definitely not all just ‘swimming’

DRW is a funny FB group of complainers but the people I know IRL who use that phrase don’t swim themselves outside of a heated pool and don’t walk dogs so I’d not be too fussed about their opinions about what to wear for that type of thing, either way.. disparaging unisex clothes because ‘mums’ might wear them is a bit mean and silly.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 25/08/2023 07:35

Dog walking, if I were forced to watch a football game etc? Sure.

but not as my regular coat, no.
