Anyone else sick of cross body bags?

Actually I love them for the convenience and having free hands etc but I noticed today that just about every woman I saw had almost identical bags. Me included. Nice Ellie Beaumont bag with changeable straps. I love this bag but god I'm not very original.

Anyone any suggestions for a nice medium sized every day bag? Budget not massive, about £80 max.

Karatema me too. I make them so they exactly fit my specifications. My latest one was made from some lovely vintage velvet from a charity shop skirt and lined with fabric from an old shirt of DH's. It cost less than £5, including the thread and zip.

Sounds lovely 😊 You should make them to spec for all us that can't find the bag we want and can't sew!

I love my Coach Prairie. Strap for when you're on the run, little handles for carrying over the arm. Fits a water bottle too!

“Chinese rip off of Longchamp?

No thanks.”

@NatashaDancing are you always such a snob?

NatashaDancing · 23/08/2023 18:36

Nothing to do with snobbery. That bag is an obvious knock off of Le Pliage, stealing Longchamp's creativity.

I'm not hugely well endowed but I understand get the "cross body bags don't look good on the well endowed" thing at all.

Not sure I understand that sentence! For me, the strap going across my body in that position separates my boobs and creates an unattractive definition ...IYSWIM. I'm happy to be told I'm wearing it wrong or need longer/narrower straps or something. I've caught a glance of myself in a shop mirror before wearing a cross body bag and nearly keeled over in horror at the shape of me!😬

Oh I’m the same. I am DD/E bras cups and crossbody bags do me no favours. With T-shirts/shirts/jumpers they are awful but with coats they are fine.

I meant don't understand the issue. They look fine.

When I wear a crossbody, the strap goes between my breasts and separates them. Because I'm pretty heavy on top (also mid 40s so they are not pert), my boobs are very obvious when the strap is holding whatever top I'm wearing very close to my skin as the strap separating my boobs makes them even more prominent.

I've caught sight of myself in mirrors and it makes squirm. I tend to hang the crossbody from my shoulder when I'm walking around e.g. shopping centres as its embarrassing. I am very aware that my breasts are very emphasised. Even my primary age children notice them.

When wearing a coat, its fine as the material is thick enough not to emphasise my chest.

PickAChew · 24/08/2023 00:06

It's not cross body that I'm sick of. It's all the zip top bags that rip my knuckles to shreds.

See, much prefer a zip top bag because I think it's maybe easier to pinch something from a bag that just has a clasp or magnetic close. I'm only going on that because the only time I've had my purse nicked was from a bag with a flap over the top and a metallic clasp.

I had something stolen out of a zipped pocket on a backpack. It doesn't really make much difference.

NameChangeEmbarressed · 25/08/2023 13:36

Mia tui have fab bags

FLEXoneyoz · 27/08/2023 06:55

@Makemineacosmo have you identified/ bought your next go to bag ? I have an old Radley with Magnetic closure that has served me well. I usually wear the flap over with the magnet inward facing my body and have not had a problem. Funnily the one time something was stolen from my bag it was zipped bag and I think they split the zip with a pin 📌 perhaps.

TheSilentSister · 27/08/2023 11:14

Thanks to this thread I've got brought the Elie Beaumont with an extra 2 free straps - it has the plain black, plus a gold chain (for evenings out) and a pink camo one that'll go with my winter coat. Perfect!

Makemineacosmo · 27/08/2023 16:29

Sorry! 😂 I love the EB bags, you can fit loads in them.

I ordered the Osprey one that you suggested @Lakeyloo and it's gorgeous. Nicer than the pic, so thank you!

@Makemineacosmo Coach do 50% off all their bags at the end of each season. I have the Prarie in blue and paid far less than the full price, in their sale. sales are on now and also in January.

Grantanow · 27/08/2023 18:48

I like them in principle but the way they are 'handed' puts me off and you can can't easily move from one shoulder to another.

Anyone else thinking of buying another cross body bag due to this thread?!

This is one of the many reasons I had a reduction 😀

Yes! I just got this one for my birthday. I’m 53. Nobody’s going to bat an eyelid that I’m wearing a bag that’s going out of fashion.
Love the wide strap and the security of having it in front of me. Less shoulder ache too.

I have this bag, it's available in a number of colours. I wear it mainly as cross body but it can be worn as a shoulder bag too.

One caveat, the strap is fiddly to get on so don't try if you have flu
