Anyone else sick of cross body bags?

Makemineacosmo · 21/08/2023 21:44

Actually I love them for the convenience and having free hands etc but I noticed today that just about every woman I saw had almost identical bags. Me included. Nice Ellie Beaumont bag with changeable straps. I love this bag but god I'm not very original.

Anyone any suggestions for a nice medium sized every day bag? Budget not massive, about £80 max.

Karatema me too. I make them so they exactly fit my specifications. My latest one was made from some lovely vintage velvet from a charity shop skirt and lined with fabric from an old shirt of DH's. It cost less than £5, including the thread and zip.

Well done. I grab denim from charity shops and some linen but I've never come across velvet.

So tempted by the last one of those @declutteringmymind !

I love the Ellie Beaumont bag I got a few years ago and have changed the strap back to the original leather one now rather than the interchangeable ones, which I actually think we're a great idea but just a bit overdone now.

Just looked out some older bags and have a lovely grey leather MV bag that I completely forgot about and a random cream one with a chain which is lovely too so I might stick with them. My work back is a big shoulder bag that I got all sorts of crap in but I only use that for work when I go in and dump it on the floor for the day.

@thereisnotachance Yes!! Absolutely this. With a coat or jacket, fine, but over a loose dress or t shirt or something I think it looks terrible on me, boob-wise. I sometimes shove the front strap over and under my arm which probably looks as weird, tbh.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/08/2023 10:26

I love my Fossil Harper Cross Body. The leather is battered but it's still beautiful (only about 5 years old but used virtually every day).

The original strap was a bit crap and split in a few places so had a "make do" job of a belt put on to replace. I've just seen fossil have a replacement strap (may not be a perfect colour match but hey ho) half price so I'm chuffed to bits as I'll get a few more years use.

Its the convenience though. Once you've had it, switching to another style is so hard.

Not a brag, but I've got a few old designer bags I've been considering selling, mainly LV so have been trialling them again to decide if worth keeping. 2 are the short handle crook of the arm style (Alma and Speedy for anyone interested) and it is such a faff! I'm constantly annoyed that I don't have a properly free arm. The one I've found I liked using is one that can at least be flung over the shoulder. You need to find the right style to transition to.

Cos usually do good bags, I'd have a look there.

Chinese rip off of Longchamp?

No thanks.

Cross body bags have been around forever. They're handy and secure.

OP's budget doesn't run to a new full size pliage. Cross body bags may have been around for ever and may be handy and secure but they are not a good look for the well endowed

I'm currently contemplating one of these but can't decide on which colour. Quite like the green one. I have a couple of bigger Osprey cross body bags which are great for days out when i want to take a bottle of water etc, but could do with something a bit smaller. I like the fact they can be shoulder, cross body or wrist 🤔

Not sick of them but am sick of that box style with thick interchangeable strap

eveoha · 22/08/2023 12:59

If anyone knows where I could lay my hands on a Michael Kors EMMY in gold saffiano leather I’d be v grateful - back pack or crossbody TIA 👍🏿☘️

I have one only slightly smaller(doesn'thave the front pocket). I loves it. I would use it on my work backpack for phone wallet and keys, then just pull it out and wear it solo at weekends. Sometimes I shove it in a large summer straw bag. It was perfect went with everything and was perfect size. (until I bought an expensive pair of sunglasses which I keep in a hard case not a soft case. Now I'm still using it because I can't find anything I like more but if I'm carrying my sunglasses it's generally a little over stuffed)

sunshinesupermum · 22/08/2023 14:43

I'm well endowed and as long as the cross body strap is long and thin it looks fine over my boobs when I am only wearing a tee shirt. I have worn them since 1990s when I bought the first one at a Coach outlet in New York. I wore it to death and have never found one as nice since!

This exactly! I have a beautiful Mulberry bag that was for a big birthday and although I love it, it's just a pain to use now that I'm used to cross body bags!

I love the practicality of a cross body bag but I’ve got huge boobs so they do me no favours at all. Shoulder bags just slip down all the time, backpacks make me feel like a turtle and who can be arsed with a bag with little grab handles. Think I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist.

I really like this actually, in that colour, I think that's nice for all seasons too. Really good price too.

I've got some lovely shoulder/clutch bags but they are such an arse to carry. Crossbody or backpack for me, backpack as preference as I can carry a fair weight effortlessly and it's just so much more comfortable.

Blossomandbee · 22/08/2023 15:06

I only wear crossbody bags, I like being hands free and they are so much safer against pick pockets especially anywhere busy. I wouldn't carry anything valuable like my purse or phone in a backpack.
I have a lovely half moon shape soft leather crossbody. It's small but can fit in everything I need. It feels more up to date than the boxy styles.

QualityCorner · 22/08/2023 16:11

It's like saying "Anyone else sick of shoulder bags? They're everywhere! Everyone's got one wherever you look!!!!"
cross body bags aren't a fashion- although you can get fashiony versions of them- worn high, long handle, chain handle, nylon crescent, 'camera' bag etc etc etc.

They are just a very practical type of bag that is here to stay- like tote bags, shoulder bags, rucksacks etc.

BHRK · 22/08/2023 16:12

I love crossbody leather bags but hate changeable straps. I think they are naff!

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/08/2023 17:28

I couldn't give up a cross body, they're too convenient. Gripping on to a handbag or a clutch and losing the use of a hand (or two with the time spent faffing/switching/hiking it back up) would feel almost as alien as wearing heels everyday would now be, to me.

I've never liked the changeable strap trend though, I just think it cheapens the look of the bag and never quite looks right with plain a plain leather body. If there's that much of a need to 'jazz up' an outfit I'd prefer just to wear something more interesting and stick to a neutral or plain bag.

Crossbody bags are so much handier. Will never go back to shoulder bags continually sliding off.

Cheesymonster · 22/08/2023 18:58

I’ve switched my many camera bags for a bucket bag with a long strap. Can still wear it cross body if I want to but it looks different.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 22/08/2023 18:59

I must be wearing the wrong kind then, I find that once you've put your phone and chunky car keys and house keys and sunglasses (which need case as prescription) it all get a bit bulky...add paper and pen, laptop (only joking but I do need to carry a laptop).

Sometimes I wear a small cross-body bag just for the phone and keys and then a separate bag (summer tote, leather bag) for all my work stuff.

I think those saying they will never date though are wrong, they are having a moment, they are great, I'm sure lots of people will keep using them given how practical they are, but the whole wide legged linen trousers/birkenstocks/body bag look will give way, that's what trends are, you can still carry on after they've swept past but it won't look as current.
