Anyone else sick of cross body bags?

Makemineacosmo · 21/08/2023 21:44

Actually I love them for the convenience and having free hands etc but I noticed today that just about every woman I saw had almost identical bags. Me included. Nice Ellie Beaumont bag with changeable straps. I love this bag but god I'm not very original.

Anyone any suggestions for a nice medium sized every day bag? Budget not massive, about £80 max.

If I had a penny for the times I've seen obituaries for birkenstocks, Uggs, skinny jeans, etc, I'd have quite a jar full of pennies...

Designs that work will always have a place.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 22/08/2023 19:16

@mathanxiety I'm not saying they are out now, I'm saying they are in now. Things that are in, go out. People still carry on wearing them (although the extremely skin-tight skinnies seem to have bitten the dust in all but a few wardrobes) but they aren't going to be at the cutting edge of fashion with lots of great colourways or whatever, like they are now. I agree some shoes seem timeless, DM's, Birkenstocks, although DMs have had a resurgence recently, they weren't especially in 15 years ago.

@eveoha
There are Michael Korda discount shops at Gunwharf and Bicester village. I’m not sure if they do the specific bag you mentioned but they definitely do gold leather bags. The Gunwharf shop often has better discounts

leccybill · 22/08/2023 19:35

What about the Uniqlo viral bag? Feels a bit more 'urban' but still the convenience of crossbody? I love mine, it holds everything.

Oblomov23 · 22/08/2023 19:39

I have 2 crossover bags that I've used for 20 years. Can't seem to find replacements.

I'm well endowed and as long as the cross body strap is long and thin it looks fine over my boobs when I am only wearing a tee shirt. I have worn them since 1990s when I bought the first one at a Coach outlet in New York. I wore it to death and have never found one as nice since!

I'm not hugely well endowed but I understand get the "cross body bags don't look good on the well endowed" thing at all.

They look fine - apart from that bum bag thing worn as a cross body bag but they look silly on everyone.

I have a few from Cambridge Satchel Company, including this one:

They’ve got a nice choice of colours and sizes depending on what you want to carry in your bag and the long strap is detachable if you want to carry it in your hand.

What about a cross body satchel? I have crossbodys but prefer satchels as they are more timeless looking and a little less the same as everyone else. Plus i find it easier to find stuff in them.

I don’t eat fat strap crossover gas to go. Very comfortable.

This is hilarious! But please tell me what you meant to say!

It's like saying "Anyone else sick of shoulder bags? They're everywhere! Everyone's got one wherever you look!!!!"
cross body bags aren't a fashion- although you can get fashiony versions of them- worn high, long handle, chain handle, nylon crescent, 'camera' bag etc etc etc.

They are just a very practical type of bag that is here to stay- like tote bags, shoulder bags, rucksacks etc.

I think it's more that particular style of crossbody bag rather than crossbody bags in particular, it's been everywhere for a few years now - smallish camera style with thick patterned guitar strap.

Totally agree.

I have never heard of the Ellie Beaumont bags and just googled them and really like them! Thanks OP :)

The only thing I don't like about them are the gold zips? Do they all have the same hardware? (is hardware even the term?)

DelphiniumBlue · 23/08/2023 01:41

thereisnotachance · 22/08/2023 08:49

I tend to wear cross body bags and in the winter, over a coat, it's fine but in the summer, over a T shirt, it's so unflattering. Makes my boobs look like two huge cushions, LOL.

Have you thought about 'the healthy back bag'?

https://www.thehealthybackbag.co.uk/

I have a healthy back bag, it's very light, and even the small size can fit a water bottle.
However the very slim strap can dig in a bit, and I cannot find a position for it where the strap doesn't look weird either between or above my boobs.

FLEXoneyoz · 23/08/2023 07:19

@Makemineacosmo have you looked at Paul Costelloe

look in the Outlet section. There are some beautiful bags in all sizes and budgets. Hardware seems to be just gold though if that’s an issue. They have matching mini purses / card holders. I usually attach those to my main bag with a carabiner clip so handy for travel cards

I have a couple and they're great little bags, I can get loads in them.

Really nice and soft too. I don't mind the gold hardware.

@FLEXoneyoz great shout, thank you, I really love some of them.

I wish that the crossbody bags were messenger style not those things with the camera straps which frankly aren’t big enough and don’t really look all that special even when expensive

eveoha · 23/08/2023 08:28

Thankyou for that new ideas today - think I may have found the perfect one ☝️ I have a lovely Modalu cross body - but it’s now too small for my paraphernalia 🙄

Jekiffe · 23/08/2023 09:25

I like crossbody bags because they are practical don’t dictate or mess up your coat style - rucksacks don’t work the same way for me.

Outnumbered99 · 23/08/2023 09:25

Iheartmysmart · 22/08/2023 14:49

I love the practicality of a cross body bag but I’ve got huge boobs so they do me no favours at all. Shoulder bags just slip down all the time, backpacks make me feel like a turtle and who can be arsed with a bag with little grab handles. Think I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist.

I am searching for the same... my boobs arent huge (F) but i also think the holy grail of handbags is yet to identify itself to me- let me know if you find it!

Cross body with long enough strap would be a start FFS.

mogtheexcellent · 23/08/2023 12:00

This is my everyday bag. At least last years version was which didnt have the shorter handle as well so I have to shorten the strap when I need to. Its lasted over a year and still looks new and I am very rough with my bags which is why I dont like to spend so much. Previous bag was a giant crossover bucket style one from John Lewis.

This was one I nearly got but I wanted green.

And they can prise my crossbody bag from my cold dead body.

Oh god me too! I'm not particularly tall but would love to find something with a longer strap than most seem to have.

Not sure I understand that sentence! For me, the strap going across my body in that position separates my boobs and creates an unattractive definition ...IYSWIM. I'm happy to be told I'm wearing it wrong or need longer/narrower straps or something. I've caught a glance of myself in a shop mirror before wearing a cross body bag and nearly keeled over in horror at the shape of me!😬

playgroundwarrior · 23/08/2023 14:50

I just sold my Pom London bag as every other middle aged mum on my suburban road had the same one. The minute I took it to the yodel shop, I felt deep regret!

Then I immediately bought another (ever so slightly edgier) camera bag. I was an idiot. Poms are amazing!

Overdemanding · 23/08/2023 14:54

I like a very small purse/phone case on a cross body strap, any bigger and I think they ruin whatever you're wearing. For me it's a leather backpack when I need a proper bag.
