Box hair dye frequency

Hi all,

I seem to be box dying my hair more often now due to greys and hair fading. I use garnier that I'm happy with but I'm dying it every three weeks. Can I safely dye it every two weeks or not?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldn't, it will really damage your hair. I do mine every 4 to 5 weeks. Maybe you should try a different hair dye. I use Naturigin and really like it.

Thelonelygiraffe · 18/08/2023 20:42

Every three weeks?? Why? It shouldn't fade so quickly. I just do mine when it grows out, so every 8 weeks?

halloween67 · 19/08/2023 14:04

It because my grey hair comes through so much, I look ridiculous. I end up covering it with so much L'Oréal root cover up that my head goes like cardboard.

Just mix a little bit of the dye in a dish and colour the new growth.

I do this for a few goes, then a full head colour every few months.

It's much better. Your hair will be in better condition and not overdyed.

Teddypops · 19/08/2023 14:15

Do you dye it all or just the roots?

Is your hair very dark?

halloween67 · 19/08/2023 14:18

How often could I just dye the roots then, can I do that every two weeks or leave until 3?

I have dark brown hair and the grey come through really prominent. I am very self conscious about it

Thanks

Sorry, I usually dye it all.

If you're only dyeing the new roots, I don't see why you can't do that whenever you want. You can keep using the same box of dye as well, as you're only mixing a little bit out of it each time.

SaleOfTwoTitties · 19/08/2023 14:24

Ps. I justvuse a small brush to put it on my roots. Like a miniature pasting brush.

coolcahuna · 19/08/2023 14:26

Yeah just try doing the roots. Mine is very dark and I get it done at the hairdresser every ten weeks. But need to do a root touch up in the middle

otherwayup · 19/08/2023 14:28

I try hard to go months between doing a box dye and have recently discovered this AMAZING stuff.
It's brilliant at painting' over my greys and makes my hair super soft and glossy.

My hair grows so fast that really I need to dye every two weeks. But I only do the roots and fortunately, semi perm is permanent on my hair, so it doesn't actually damage the rest of my hair.
I do wonder about the amount of chemical exposure, but in reality it ends up being once a month, as I'm lazy and it's a faff. Hate the roots though.

Danceswithweasels · 19/08/2023 14:43

I got to this point with my greys, two weeks and I had grey around my hair line, temples and parting. I now use Leganza coloured conditioner (recommended on here) for the last two weeks and then colour every month with box dye, mainly doing the roots. Leganza is a bit of a faff but my hair is thicker and in better condition than it has been for ages.

Flossflower · 19/08/2023 15:48

I have been using a L’Oréal box dye for a very long time. The hairdresser told me to do the roots only. Don’t put it on wet hair. Mix the dye into a bowl or mug. Part your hair into thin bits as you go. You probably could tie or clip it off in sections first. Use a proper hair dye brush and just brush it on the roots. This is how the hairdresser would do it. Yes I do mine every 3 weeks. Occasionally I just mix up half the contents and just do the roots on top and at the front. I do this when I am going somewhere and it has only been a couple of weeks after the previous dye.
When I first started dyeing my hair I was nearly black and I used a very dark brown hair dye. Over the years the shade I have been using has got lighter and lighter as my white hairs became a bigger percentage of the hair. I now use 7.11 (ultra ash). I am quite lucky that the dark hairs don’t dye the same as the light ones so it is not just one solid colour.

Thank you, brilliant advice

Are you able to use the same box of hair dye over a few weeks to do the roots several times or do you have to use a fresh box each time? If the former, how do you know how much to mix separately and will the remainder (unmixed) keep?

RaininSummer · 19/08/2023 21:43

I would like to know how you only mix up a small bit as do the proportions of colour stuff and developer stuff have be quite precise? I usually do my greys first but then use the rest on the whole head but I like this plan. Does the unused part keep ok for a month or so once opened and resealed?

Hedjwitch · 19/08/2023 21:48

Mine is short so I just do the whole lot every 4 weeks or so.

Great advice. Especially the bit about going lighter gradually to soften the effect of the white stripe

Meredusoleil · 19/08/2023 22:29

You sound like me OP. I use Olia and usually do my whole head with half the mixture (short hair) every 4-5 weeks. But as I'm getting older, I'm noticing the greys growing through quicker.

I have also tried going to lighter colours (recently bought a 6) but it has come out darker than the 5 I was using before! As a result, my hair is about 3 different colours depending on the light 😐

If I am doing all my roots I use a full bicycle. If I am just doing the top and sides ( bits that show ) I use half a box. I do it by weight. The weights of each item are on the box.

You weigh them to be precise. The weights are on the box. You use in the same proportions.

Box not bicycle 😂

Sorry I didn’t answer your question about the remaining half keeping.
It does keep. I put the lid tightly back on and use the remaining half fairly soon.
When you pour out the remaining half you will get a bit of dye that has turned to colour already at the top of the tube but I just ignore that.

I used to be you. I had it professionally lightened. Had some highlights. It's now a mid brown colour with natural highlights. I colour my hair now every 8 weeks (roots only) and the greys barely show in between.

So glad I did. I used to get a white stripe along my parting after about 2 weeks of colour.

Also suggest you only ever do the roots unless you change the whole colour.
