So it looks like I have a long torso. Which must mean I have very very short legs as I am only 5’2”. What does this mean in terms of things that will and won’t work for me I wonder? Most of the things that I think of as not working for me are usually because of my big tummy, non-existent hips and small bum. I have no idea what this new element means. Off to google…

agnesmartin · 21/08/2023 12:33

I am another with a long torso and short legs. Also 5ft 7. Size 16/18 and worried that I'm being sized out of Toast clothes which would be a real shame - but should also probably encourage me to buy more second hand / old sizing. My bank balance would appreciate that!

Has anyone noticed that the reviews are missing from the Toast website again, or is it just me?

Has anyone tried this jacket? Think there was something in the review that put me off ... but can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Our Walnut Garment Dyed Cotton Herringbone Jacket has a neat shawl collar. It has patch pockets and a hanging loop.

I’ve recently tried on this jacket and can’t find a bad word to say about it. It’s good quality, cut well and beautiful colour. Fits well with room underneath ( I’m a size 12 and Toast 12 was a good fit). I have to decide between this and Hal jacket. I’ve decided to go for the Hal because I think it will work with absolutely everything and it’s a slightly longer length. It was a difficult decision. I can see the 3 reviews. Can’t see anything negative.

agnesmartin · 21/08/2023 18:11

Thank you very much for your reply @Noodle421 . I still can't see the reviews, iOS, macOS or Firefox. How strange. I'm just going to have to try it, aren't I? Might as well have a look at the Hal also. Thanks again.

ilovecherries · 21/08/2023 18:13

I can see the reviews too - nothing negative. I have two of those shawl collar jackets from eBay. One is brown cord, one indigo hemp. They are lovely.

Ordered. Thank you. I'm trying to be more considered in my purchases - thanks in part to this thread - and this seems like a really useful wee jacket that will go with just about everything. 🤞🏼

PretLea · 22/08/2023 07:58

@Countmeout I can’t seem to remember whether or not it was you who mentioned the off white Reed cotton linen shirt in the previous thread. Do I have it right? Just wondering about the sizing. It seems pretty oversized, but the way they’ve categorised the sizing brackets is baffling.

Countmeout · 22/08/2023 08:17

No not me @PretLea . Not sure who? Poss cherries.

ilovecherries · 22/08/2023 08:22

No, not me. I think it was @neveradullmoment99

Interesting conversation so I will add some random ruminations. I’ve been on a bit of a body positivity journey for the last decade. Well post-meno, I’ve changed from a size 24 to a sturdy 10. I think what I learned in that process that I was never in a million years going to lose weight while I hated my body. That just wasn’t helping my motivation or the somewhat complex reasons for being so large in the first place. So I. 2015 I decided I would spend a year just focusing on amicable coexistence with what was and then review things. So I got nice things that fitted me (and in plus size that really is hard, sadly, even second hand). I never left the house without at a minimum, mascara, perfume and earrings. As I started to feel less hateful towards my poor body, I gradually started to treat it better with regards to what I ate and how I moved. I’m not going to lie and say that was enough for weight loss - it wasn’t, that took a lot of effort and tbh still does. But I stopped talking and thinking about the bits I didn’t like (mostly all of it at that stage!) and started to focus on what those bits needed - soft natural fabrics, drape, ease etc. and THEN I started to think about what would pull a look together. Now I’ve reached a stage where I look at my body with interest rather than loathing. You don’t get that degree of weight loss, especially at my age, without it taking its toll but I am much better now at asking myself what it needs to feel and look good. With practice I’ve got better at looking at combinations of pieces and accessories and checking in with myself - do I FEEL how I need to feel today. If not, off it comes. My focus is on health, functionality, ease with myself. If I get that right, the rest sort of flows. One of my happiest moments was when I reached the point where places like Hush and Toast fitted me and I think Toast especially makes clothes that just work for larger bodies. It’s not about concealment or flatter, it was for me about construction, fit, drape, comfort, elegance. No butterflies, flounces or infantilisation there. It bothers me that they seem to be edging sizing downwards as, while not truly size inclusive, they were one of the few places women with bigger bodies could find good quality clothing.

@ilovecherries , I love your ruminations. What a personal journey of exploration and discovery you have been on, I really admire you and always love your contributions to our threads.

Noodle421 · 22/08/2023 09:45

@ilovecherries yes, thank you for your post. I’ve read it a few times, so thoughtful, insightful and beautifully written. It’s given me lots to think about X

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 22/08/2023 09:49

I returned my Tie Front Poplin Tank and toast deducted the shipping cost (despite the fact I have kindred and don't pay shipping) from my refund, this is the second time they've done this to me recently. I rang cs and they said it was a mistake and refunded it straight away, but I think it is worth everyone checking you have received the full amount when returning items.

Noodle421 · 22/08/2023 09:54

@PretLea i have the Reed shirt in the largest size as the middling size pulled slightly across the bust. This means the shirt is slightly on the large side all over but not enough for me to send it back. I love it - so cool and crisp on a hot day. I’m 5 ft 8 and a UK12, if that helps. Sometimes I tuck it in slightly at the front and this reduces the volume a little. So, ideally I’d have the middle size if there wasn’t the bust issue, but I’m happy compromising. I know someone who is very tall, very slim and she bought the largest size too and it looks fab on her, not too big at all. Hope this helps.

AFingerofFudge · 22/08/2023 10:59

@ilovecherries your post has really struck a chord with me and given me plenty to think about in terms of how kind (or not) I am to myself!

@ScottishMouse i also struggled with this this but This instagrammer explains it

Oh so this is what it means. I've just nipped to the loo to whip my top up and see what I am! Appears I am proportioned....navel only peeks out from my lower hand. Not sure I am any the wiser about proportions but feel I've gained something today Grin

OftenOrange · 22/08/2023 11:43

@PretLea I also have the Reed shirt and love it .
I usually am size 8 and have the Reed in XXS/XS , it’s fitted around shoulders and any smaller would have restricted my arms,
It has an unusual cut in that the armholes are deep but towards the front of the body which makes the fit a bit tricky.
I would recommend getting a couple of sizes to try if you can’t get to a store.

Excellent tip, @Theteapotsbrokenspout just checked and I will have to chase up my last return!

My brain's too Covid-y to contribute to the wise and lovely philosophical body image chat, but in brass tacks terms I just watched that instagrammer and that's not what I mean by short-waistedness. From dressmaking books, I learned to define it as the 'hinge point' of the body i.e. if you stand up straight then start to lean to one side and then the other, the points at which your body naturally starts to bend marks the waist. This is a bone structure thing so nothing to do with your belly button location or where your weight is distributed and it may not be the narrowest part of the torso.

If you are within an average height range, you can get an idea just from trying lots of clothes. I knew long before sewing that I had a long rise because I would need jeans labelled as high-rise or rib-cage to even look like a respectable mid-rise on me. Standard mid-rise cuts look like I'm trying to channel Y2K Britney / blend in with my students.

I like the hinge-point definition, @clowniform !
Having lost some weight at an "older" age, I can just say that placements of belly-buttons are not always constant 😊

agnesmartin · 22/08/2023 12:41

I have a long rise - and vivid memories of wedgies as a kid. Don't think they did long rise trousers in the 80s, or certainly not where Mum got my clothes.

Noodle421 · 22/08/2023 12:54

@agnes wedgies 😂

I’d forgotten that word and style look

Noodle421 · 22/08/2023 12:54

Maybe this is why I appreciate a Toast dropped crotch so much! 😆

AmethystMoonShine · 22/08/2023 14:06

Off to the mirror again to note my bending point!........

Alpacasoft · 22/08/2023 14:44

Loving the long/ short waist discussion.
Having stripped off and had a measure I can confirm that I am balanced, long but balanced!
I have a long waist and pelvis but long legs also.
Another thing knitters and dressmakers discuss when deciding on size is ease.
If you measure a top or piece of knitwear that fits and you compare against your body measurements it tells you how much ease you have ( can be negative ease but that would be a very fitted style)
I take a small Liberty tape measure everywhere with me and one sits at my side to check on projects.
It's well worth finding out your preferred ease plus length and rise on various garments.
I can now work out if something will fit or not.
It's infuriating that Toast don't give measurements for their garments.
I'm very happy that Seasalt do a long length which also means an adjusted rise and I have so many pairs of their trousers.
