This isn't doing much for me, is it?

This dress:

www.axparis.com/products/duck-egg-short-sleeve-belted-wrap-midi-dress

On me...

What's the problem? Is it too big/too small? Am I too short? Is it the sleeves? Is the neckline too high?

Loved the colour and had such high hopes!

I am sick to death of trying to dress this body. I'm a size 8/10 and just under 5ft 2.

Where am I going wrong?

This isn't doing much for me, is it?

It looks like cheap fabric on the model photo, the hem and the belt give it away.

Agree it's too big for you on top - if you're wedded to it you could get it taken in to fit better.

anon2022anon · 01/08/2023 19:59

What on earth is all the extra material above the waist there for? It doesn't look bad because of you, it looks bad because it's a really bad cut.

isthismylifenow · 01/08/2023 20:02

In the first modelled picture it hangs as if it were a viscose type fabric. But it actually just looks like polyester on I'm your photo. They don't look like the same dress to me.

MajesticWhine · 01/08/2023 20:02

Too big for you and not a great colour

Mayhem3 · 01/08/2023 20:14

It looks too big, either because you need a smaller size or because the model is very tall.

A lot of these photos are also photoshopped and never look like what they do on the model.

One good thing about shein is that buyers can post their own photos to show what it looks like on a range of women.
It never looks like it does in the original pic, even if the person has a perfect figure.

headwear · 01/08/2023 20:17

It's straight out the wrapper so, yes, badly creased.

I have no idea what colour suits me. I do have a baby belly, 18 years post-baby.

I've tried shopping in person and the only dress I liked looked rubbish on me too.

I need something by next Friday 😭

And thank you for the replies. Especially those which said it's not me, it's the dress.

It's me, hi. I'm the problem. It's me.

I’m no expert but I would guess it’s got 50 billion bulldog clips you can’t see, for their website photos. It swamps you and has twice as much fabric as it needs!

This! Happens to me all the time, completely swamped by the amount of material, the photos on certain websites are so misleading

Crucible · 01/08/2023 20:24

The model is pinned all over and posed. The lighting in the shots or in post production give it a vibrant tone. The dress in real life, in ordinary lighting , is dull at best. It's not you, keep looking xx

Whataretheodds · 01/08/2023 20:28

What colours do you have in your wardrobe that make your face light up, OP?

Catabogus · 01/08/2023 20:41

It’s not you, it’s the dress for certain. It looks awful on the model too. Cheap-looking, and looks as though it’s made from 100% polyester. Also a very drab colour! I’m certain you can do much, much better.

RunnerDown · 01/08/2023 20:44

What do you need a dress for. I’m around the same size as you and that dress wouldn’t suit me either. I need something more fitted around the top half and either above knee if short or definitely midi.
maybe folk could make other suggestions if there was more information.
I like the dress but it’s definitely not flattering on you

Bobbybobbins · 01/08/2023 20:46

A fit and flare skater type dress might work well for you, in a brighter colour.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/08/2023 20:47

You have a lovely figure, get that straight, but the dress is all wrong. The bodice is too loose and floppy, the colour is dreadful, and the overall shape of it is just bad.

It is definitely not your body, it's the dress.

headwear · 01/08/2023 20:49

Oh sorry, I didn't realise I hadn't said. It's for a wedding.

As for what makes my face light up, this is just the kind of question I really can't answer. I've always thought I look okay in emerald/dark green, but I could be totally wrong!

I wouldn't wear dark green on this occasion anyway, as I know the bridesmaids are wearing it.

The dress is too small, you need to size up to get the model’s flowing material skimming her figure look.

I think the model's look is entirely down to the dress being steamed to within an inch of its life, and the gratuitous use of bulldog clips and good lighting.

I think the dress is too big on you! You look lost in it.

MarciaSaysANumber · 01/08/2023 21:08

Might need shortening but that shouldn’t be a problem.

polkadotdalmation · 01/08/2023 21:10

With your figure and shape you should look gorgeous in a sack, but that dress does nothing for you. Crumpled, clean looking fabric, boring and lumpy round the boobs.

You will find plenty of lovely clothes eventually...just not that one

Mrsjayy · 01/08/2023 21:11

The picture looks a different dress the actual dress swamps you and is too "wafty" I wonder if the photo dress has been clipped back?

polkadotdalmation · 01/08/2023 21:12

Cheap, or clean!

NatashaDancing · 01/08/2023 21:13

It's not a nice dress.

It's not nice on the website and it's worse in real life. It looks cheap and crumpled and makes you look much bigger than an 8/10.

Grumpigal · 01/08/2023 21:17

The dress is very meh at best, it looks quite nice on the model but it’s got that “old” vibe about it - like tea dresses, on a 20+ year old they look cute and quirky but on a 40+ year old they really can easily look aging and frumpy.

It doesn’t fit you, the material is a bit crap and the proportions are off. Absolutely nothing wrong with you or your body, this is just not the fit and shape for you!
