Have we had a slag off M&S thread lately?

Because I went today and it was shit.

I wanted a bra. Found six that I liked. Not one available in my size.

Plain black jersey midi skirt. Would’ve been perfect but they had ONE in the entire store- size 18.

Denim maxi- they had a size 8 and a size 22.

Everything else was either a horrible colour, shape, fabric or all 3.

Why do they make it so hard to spend money there?

Now that you've identified what you would like to buy, why not go online and get it there? That's what I do. I like to see the item 'in the flesh' so to speak, to be sure I like it, but invariably I can't find my size so I go home and buy it from the website.

I will be doing that now they insist that customers have to use the self checkout. Yes, I know some people like them. I don't.

MoltenLasagne · 31/07/2023 12:45

I loved their thermal tops a few years ago, the ones I bought last year I've already had to chuck due to bobbling which is so frustrating.

Amniceandgenuine · 31/07/2023 12:47

I prefer next .M and S tops are too short. I want my bum and tum covered .Next also generally more colourful and fun .

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2023 12:48

<fingers in ears>

I still love you, M&S! Although I can't remember the last time I bought in store - always online.

Although all those additional brands can just shove off. If I wanted to buy from Seasalt, Hobbs etc then I'd be shopping at Seasalt, Hobbs etc.

And the sleeves. Nope, don't want them up around my armpit, thanks.

I think the quality and cut have declined in the last few years
I'm happy to buy( very good) used from Vinted and have just bought 2 boxy linen T shirts in black and white which are lovely heavy linen

Mumsanetta · 31/07/2023 12:57

I completely disagree with you! I’m 36 and did a full summer wardrobe shop at M&S at the end of May and got everything I needed so think you’re just a bit late. Have had compliments on pretty much everything I bought. I went for that old money/Iuxe Italian grandparent look that’s on trend and M&S hit the mark perfectly.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 31/07/2023 12:59

I like their menopause vests

I have two slobbing around tops from M&S that are so old I can't actually recall when I bought them (probably over 15 years ago). The sleeves have frayed and I've had to cut that off, and one sleeve has a hole, but otherwise they are sturdy cotton that goes on and on. Current stuff, meanwhile...

And that of course is the problem. Marks don't want people to wear all their old stuff that doesn't wear out.

I love M&S too! Yes there are always plenty of horrors and their knickers quality has gone downhill, but I always find lots of good stuff too

I always buy in store through because their sizing is SO unreliable, I just have to try everything on

The what?

I think this comment explains why this isn't the board for me.

Grin I was just looking at a shorts/jacket outfit on their sale email and it fits this description perfectly.

The cotton pyjamas are good.

I never even think about M and S anymore. The fabrics are all crap. I can’t wear manmade fibres. All their hoodies are poly cotton.

The fabrics in the women's section are crap...the fabrics in the men's section are pretty good. No shortage of cotton or wool there 🙄

Elderflower14 · 31/07/2023 13:07

I agree re knickers and holes... I have several pairs that have got holes in a lot sooner than normal.

M&S have a fantastic range of mastectomy and post-surgery bras. However, they don't seem to make anything smaller than a 32" back which is still way to big for me. As if having a mastectomy isn't hard enough, but the dearth of any suitable lingerie is making it even more frustrating.

This is something I just don't understand about them, they have great ideas but never quite think things through properly.

That said, they have some lovely 100% cotton nightwear. The staff in my local branch are always really helpful too.

MariaVT65 · 31/07/2023 13:12

Their kids and baby clothes wash a lot better than cheaper brands, but their maternity clothes are overpriced and lacking for something you only wear for a year. New Look is much cheaper but still great quality.

Also I used to work there and the treat staff like crap. I saw an incident of a manager sexually harassing a young female colleague, and the store’s solution was to transfer him to a different store instead of sacking him.

DustyLee123 · 31/07/2023 13:14

The knickers are not what they used to be. Thin fabric and they are smaller.

ladyvivienne · 31/07/2023 13:15

I've stopped shopping there.

Zero staff on the shop floor (in my day you'd always have at least one member of staff, knowledgeable per dept) and the staff on the tills seem pissed off (definitely supervisors pissed off they've been put back on tills)

M&S need to sort their staffing out big time before I will even entertain going back.

Currently favouring the Baglady Look. Don't think M&S hits the mark for that.

DustyLee123 · 31/07/2023 13:16

My local M&S has turned over a large area of floor space to Seasalt now.

DustyLee123 · 31/07/2023 13:17

The granny nightie look is in apparently, just need to pair it with curlers and slippers for an up to date look 🤣

BatshitCrazyWoman · 31/07/2023 13:30

The only thing I used to buy from them regularly was opaque tights. I bought some in March and found they've fucked them up now, and they are super stretchy and just fall down. I can't go down a size as I'm already in the smallest size. I get them somewhere else now.

Last year I was looking for a vest top. Bought one in there as a last resort - it was full of holes in a couple of months.

I CBA with them now.

It's aesthetically different to having a wrinkled pair of leggings and a wolf fleece over a faded vest top. Obviously, not the only look around; the elderly ballet teacher is a good one, as is the fluffy, rosy cheeked farming grandmother of 18 on the last count. We can't all be mistaken for the sister of a 22 year old model and influencer like the ones that feature in the Daily Mail every so often.

neilyoungismyhero · 31/07/2023 13:48

I went in the other day for a bra fitting- I had to make an appointment and go back later on. A Colleague took me into a cubicle with a tape measure- asked me what size I was? I told her I was wearing 36C currently but wasn't comfortable she measured my band and off she went for 5 minutes. She came back with half a dozen bras - all 36C. I asked her if that was it and she said 'yes darling'. I then said I could have done all that myself and expected a little more input re. the measurements. I didn't stay and later had another fitting elsewhere who told me I was a 34F and explained why. Really disappointed because they have a lot of choice and are affordable.
