What is your skincare routine?

TheBloatedMiddle · 31/07/2023 06:43

I am 50 and since having the Dcs I am out of a skincare routine. I wash my face with Dove soap, moisturise and that's it. Somewhat surprisingly my skin is in pretty good shape but it's time to get back to caring for it.

Way back in the day when i was richer and had more time I used to have monthly facials. But i just went onto the website of the place I went to and facials are now over £100! No way. So i have just bought some various creams and serums from Amazon and wish to get back to it.

I use sunscreen every day and I use a facial mask about 3 times a year. I am planning to do a weekly mask- recommendations very welcome! I used to have oily skin but now am very much a combination- dry on cheeks and oily around the nose.

Would love to hear what others do and what they swear by!!

I wouldn’t use dove soap (or any soap/micellar) as they strip all the natural oils out and cause dryness.

my routine:
am
rinse face
Vitamin c serum
eye cream
sunscreen

pm
cleanse with creamy cleanser
peptide eye cream
tretinoin
moisturiser

😃

TheBloatedMiddle · 31/07/2023 06:53

I've never even heard of tretinoin!

I have much to learn!

Hiya!

I love skincare! And it's a great habit.

Everyone has different skin. So it's always good to read about your own skin type.
I love by reading/ watching stuff by Caroline hirons, but she can be a bit marmite and sometimes recommends very overly expensive stuff.
There is a dermatologist called Dr Natalia Spierings who I have really been impressed with, who takes the myths out of it and makes it really simple!!

Day time routine

Ceravae cleanser
Pixie glow toner (Aldi do a great dupe)
The ordinary or inky list hyralonic acid (whatever is on offer)
The ordinary caffeine eye serum.
Jr Jart Gel Moisturizer (it was on offer, but also the ordinary cream is just fine)
Ceravae day cream with SPF.
Vaseline for lips.

I probably overuse products... I know you could cleanse and then put on the SPF and vaseline and that would be fine!

Night time routine
For taking off make up, I love the Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter, followed by a warm flannel. I feel it gets everything off.
I also use ceravae as my second cleanser.
(Either product alone is just fine, I just love massaging my face haha!)
Then, pixie glow toner.
Then, the ordinary retinol (I'm on a lesser strength one)
Then, hyralonic acid.
Then, caffeine eye serum.
Then I use ceravae night cream.
And lastly Boots lavender facial oil.

My skin feels really lovely since making the bit of extra time for the last couple of years.

I also treat myself to the odd fancy product, like Emma Hardie, Clarins or Clinique. I know my friend swears by the Moisture Surge by Clinique! But al depends on budget.

I also bought and usea foreo (new from eBay, so not full price) after I have rubbed all the cleanser in, I run it under water and use it on my face. It is good, but I am never convinced it does anything more than make me cleanse my face for an extra minute! But I like it!

Also, the key to everything here is, water. Drink lots of the stuff and it'll do wonders to everything!

TheBloatedMiddle · 31/07/2023 07:11

Nice! Thanks for the reply!

On the subject of massaging- way back in the day I used to have an ultrasonic cleaning brush for the face. I have no idea where that might be.

has anyone tried this before? I never noticed much of a difference to be honest.

Plus- yes- water. I have decided to dump alcohol and most caffeine as well in favour of water and herbal teas. I have realised I just cannot get away with things anymore!

My skin care routine:
Morning - wash with water
Evening - wash with water

Morning:
Wash with Cerave cleanser
Moisturizer
SPF 50

Evening:
Wash with Cerave or a cleansing oil and cloth if wearing makeup
Skin+Me

What really made a difference to my skin was the Skin+Me prescription (with tretinoin). I’m 49.

Sweetladyjane · 31/07/2023 07:33

AM

  • Cerave cleanser
  • rosehip oil
  • spf

PM

  • Cerave to remove make up
  • Inky list salicylic cleanser
  • skin + me cream (includes tret, niacin ode and azaelic acid)
  • rose hip oil
  • nivea from the blue tub

I’ve only been following this routine for a couple of months but my skin definitely looks brighter and my acne scars are fading plus I’m having less breakouts.

I’m 45 and menopausal so that’s done a number on my skin.

TheBloatedMiddle · 31/07/2023 07:34

I have just booked a facial for this week. I decided I can probably manage one every 4 months.

It has been a very long time since I spent any money on myself. It feels a bit scary.

Which eye cream do people find is the best for de-puffing eyes? Suddenly this is a huge issue for me 😂

Otherwise I use LRP Effaclar cleanser and toner and the duo cream. Sometimes use the LRP Effaclar serum.

EasyCosUrBeautiful · 31/07/2023 07:47

I also saw this on active and could have written it myself! I’ve somehow dropped my routine altogether in the past year or so.

Am going to make up a little routine for myself. My skin is a mess these days and collagen loss has just started to kick in as well.

@TheBloatedMiddle are you really cutting back on caffeine? I feel like it’s my one pleasure in life 😬

RaceToTheMiddle · 31/07/2023 07:47

I really love the giant tube from Aldi of Lacura Hot Cloth Cleanser.
I use this morning and evening. They do a minty one and an orange one! I just have both tubes and do what I fancy. They’re £2.49 each and last ages.

i use some kind of moisturiser with SPF in. Currently Aldi again! The one in red glass pot.

At night I already use the Marks and Spenser Ultimate Sleep cream.

I occasionally through in other things, but the above is 90% what I do.

I have good skin, I am 40.

TheBloatedMiddle · 31/07/2023 07:57

I am about to head to Aldi so will check out the creams and unguents. Smile

@EasyCosUrBeautiful my intention is to just have coffee at breakfast. So that would be 3 cups. I usually average about 8 cups a day thanks to a stressful job and this being a displacement activity! I am on leave right now so will try and cut right back and replace with herbal teas. I only drink instant and might see if half instant half decaf helps as well. I find at weekends I rarely have coffee other than my wake-up coffee so think (hope) it's a habit rather than an addiction!

Right- back from Aldi and have bought some eye serum and day cream with SPF 30.

:)

Feeling quite excited! I have to get over my guilt about the facial though. I do barely anything for myself and DH has a very expensive outing hobby so i can certainly justify spending some money on me. Smile

A good wash with exfoliating face wash in the morning. Then toner. Then I use tinted moisturiser with SPF as my base coat of make up.

Before bed I cleanse using the body shop vitamin e cream cleanser and toner, use eyelash serum and then finish with either body shop night cream or glycerin oil (this is very dense and greasy and I don't like using it every night but it's a fab moisturiser and all natural).

That's about it really, not much but better than a baby wipe!

Blarn · 31/07/2023 09:26

What exactly does a facial do? I like skincare, enjoy using products etc but have never ventured into the world of facials. I looked on google a while ago as there a few nice looking places around with good reviews but I don't know where to start or what to expect. I get hormonal breakouts, is this something a facial could help with?

AM - a light gel cleanser or elf holy hydration cleanser. Sometimes Holika Holika ceramide toner, Cetaphil moisuriser/spf depending on how much time I am spending outside.

PM - remove makeup with Elmis cream cleanser (had a free sample, not my favourite one) and a cloth if wearing more makeup, elf cleanser and a cloth if not. Salicylic acid toner if breaking out, body shop face oil I was given and then Beauty Bay oat moisturiser. Once every two weeks I exfoliate and at the moment am using the Wishful skin one which I expected to dislike but its great.

DinoSaw · 31/07/2023 09:26

I’m 40 and really need to up my game skin care wise. Breastfeeding though which does limit my options a bit.

Im trying skin and me but I think it’s overpriced for what I can actually have.

I might try adding vitamin c to my morning routine as I just feel a bit dull.

skin and me have me on Azelaic Acid 10%, Niacinamide 4% so I’ll probably buy one or both once they run out.

Happy to hear recommendations for all three. And if anyone has a magic bullet anti age serum or similar I’ll be all ears. Without the breastfeeding I’d be retinol, Botox and fillers but as it is I’ll have to wait.

Cocktopus · 31/07/2023 09:37

Wash face and moisturise with Cerave twice a day

Retinol every other evening

Sunscreen as and when

That's it! My skin's in pretty good nick if I do say so myself.

Cocktopus · 31/07/2023 09:42

Aldi skincare is brilliant. I used to use the Rejuvelate SPF 30 day cream every day until suddenly out of the blue I had a reaction to it. To be fair I'm in medication which makes me sensitive to loads of stuff so it probably wouldn't have been the fault of the moisturiser. I loved it - great base for makeup, good SPF and about three quid a jar. I miss it!

The soy serum they used to do was wonderful too, I used it daily until they discontinued it. Was better than retinol for my skin and I've never found a serum I loved more. I wish they'd bring it back!

SunRainStorm · 31/07/2023 09:47

I'm pregnant so trying to avoid anything too potent or forbidden for pregnancy.

AM:
wash with just water and a cloth
Toner
B5 serum
Vitamin C serum
Light Moisturiser
Sunscreen

PM:
Double cleanse with cream wash
Toner
B5 serum
Vitamin C
Rose hip oil or other facial oil
Heavy moisturiser

I also have an LED mask I use sometimes. When I'm finished breastfeeding I'm going to look into some prescription retinol and possibly even Botox etc.

I'm 38. My skin is ok but I have some early aging signs around the eyes and forehead and some hyperpigmentation from acne that I'd like to improve.

Workawayxx · 31/07/2023 09:49

I try and keep things simple and not too expensive (although the skin&me is £24.99 a month but includes 3 ingredients on mine - tretinoin, azaleic acid and niacinimide so that’s the thing I splash out on). My skin is so much happier with make up on since I’ve started the Hado labo serum (basically lots of types of hyalauronic acid so very hydrating). Before makeup would go really patchy.

morning:
Cleanse with avene oat cleanser- link
Spritz face with rose water or leave damp from cleansing
Apply Hado labo gold serum (sometimes 2 layers - link
Apply spf50, I use a cheap one at the moment that I don’t love but really like the beauty of jeosun one.

Evening:
Same oat cleanser (twice if I can be bothered!)
Apply skin&me dose (it gives you a special dispenser that gives 28 portions)
wait a bit then apply Corsx snail mucin
Apply cerave moisturiser - huge tub for not v expensive link

Rohto Mentholatum - Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion 2020 Edition - 170ml

I'm 62 and horribly lazy but trying to keep up a routine.
AM hot cloth cleanse in the shower with, at the moment the ALDI Lacura one which I don't like. My favourite is the REN gel cleanser. Wash off with a flannel.
Serum - currently the Sali Hughes Vitamin C one which I really like
Moisturiser - currently a Clinique gel.

PM much the same except removing make-up first with a micellar water.
I've got an acid toner (also Sali Hughes) which I use every couple of days.
My problem is that I'm addicted to beauty boxes from the likes of Latest In Beauty (I saw my first beauty advent calendar ad yesterday), so I'm always using odd samples.

The Jo Malone perfume dupes are fantastic too, while you're in the beauty aisle.
