And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

@smokingcarriageonly thank you so much for the Rachel dress link. They all look so different depending on the fabric used don't they. I've just ordered this one:

https://onehundredstars.co.uk/products/dhurrie-rachel-dress?pr_prod_strat=use_description&pr_rec_id=fb8fae237&pr_rec_pid=6914762407994&pr_ref_pid=6826866901050&pr_seq=uniform

This thread could get expensive!

Dhurrie Rachel Dress

A print inspired by traditional hand-woven antique rugs from across the globe.  This cowl neck, V-line dress features a pin tuck front, and pockets and can be styled loose or worn with a belt to create a beautiful silhouette.

I've been tempted by that one myself, I love the soft, muted colours.

Ooh thank you...too much norkage to be a size 8 here. Dd might like !

"Too much norkage" 😆
Great phrase.

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 04/08/2023 18:22

"...performative hopscotch skipping down the corridor to her office."

Lord, the image that conjures up!

Darkacademic · 04/08/2023 18:25

I also suffer from too much norkage, my new fave description!

highlandcoo · 04/08/2023 18:38

@smokingcarriageonly I'm also small busted with a high waist/short on norkage Grin so I'm hoping the fit will be good on me too

The Rachel dresses are beautiful, but I do wonder what they look like on a middle aged slightly round little lady, and not just on the beauties on the website - also, what they look like without the wearer sticking her hands on her hips or waving her arms in the air. The Abbi looks as if it might have a bit more shape for the norkily blessed.

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 04/08/2023 19:56

"...the norkily blessed"

These descriptions just get better!

Currently watching Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop and the main character (heiress to fab country house and academic) has a very DA look. And a fab handbag that I’m trying to identify - think it’s Mulberry but could be Hermes.

I'll have to check that one out.

What do we think about the skirt below from Disturbia?

Problem is I work from home so I can't think where to wear skirts anymore (although I also work for a Uni, not an Academic). At my old place I would have swished round the cloisters feeling v mysterious /chic librarian.

I also wonder if it's too kitsch? Sometimes I do veer towards quirky print and pattern. I have a lovely scarf and matching leather bag from Aspinal, all burgundy with a whimsy woodland print. But sometimes I think patterns like that can look a bit cutsey/frivolous. It is a cool scarf though and I like it very much 😃

@MissoniIMPOSSIBLE - if you can identify the handbag I’d be endlessly grateful as my Google-fu has let me down.

Gah ! Disturbua skirt linked below.Poisonous plant skirt

Love the print. Love lots of the prints on that site, but wonder what the quality would be like.

Darkacademic · 04/08/2023 21:03

Oooooh I saw the poisonous print dress but didn’t see the skirt, and loved it. I guess most people would see “floral print” and not know about that it was an alternative to AK47 and pistol print.

Mmm yes it's always hit and miss with the likes of Hell bunny, Disturbia, Joanie ect. I'd give it a punt if in the sale and had viscose in the make up (although not hard wearing won't make me all static or sweaty like poly/acrylic)

I would have loved it at 17 to wear to sixth form !

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 04/08/2023 21:25

@BurningTheToast

Is it the one at 24 seconds into this clip? Or 28 seconds in?

Hell Bunny is better imo. I have an amazing 100% cotton dress from there which is fab quality.

I'm 5'6", 10-12 and very middle aged 😀 This is the marbled green Rachel, unbelted (apologies for what looks like it may be a pile of laundry on the floor). I'm quite flatchested, but I think it could also suit someone more zaftig and glamorous.

@OrangeSpicedBun Thank you so much for those links- I hadn't realised Oxfam had a website! I think a combo of that and Vinted is going to be essential to keeping within budget for me...

I had some success yesterday with Vinted and found a beautiful cashmere Margaret Howell mock neck jumper in an olive green. Now I just need to find somewhere to wear it away from baby vomit and sticky toddler fingers.

Darkacademic · 05/08/2023 07:15

I’m off work at the moment and soooo bored - going to have to watch this for inspiration!

Darkacademic · 05/08/2023 07:17

Miss Willoughby that is - haven’t figured out replying to posts yet and have a small person trapping one arm which makes typing hard.

I love the sound of your Margaret Howell jumper, I've also had some luck on Vinted , a white &other stories blouse and a brown sleeveless sweater vest from woolovers.

In the last couple of years I've been collecting woollen jumpers from charity shops - mostly mens and mostly marks and Spencer's .

RedLem0nade · 05/08/2023 08:15

@smokingcarriageonly That dress looks fab on you. Also I had never heard the word zaftig and I love it! I’m learning so much on this threadSmile
