Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

Loving this thread! There are some lovely Margaret Howell tan leather bags on eBay at the moment …

@MissoniIMPOSSIBLE

Is it the one at 24 seconds into this clip? Or 28 seconds in?

The first one!

Morestrangerthings1 · 05/08/2023 09:19

@smokingcarriageonly Thank you for taking the time to post the image. It’s good to see it on someone not posing. The dress looks good on you.

I really like the Rachel dress.

And it has pockets which is a big plus for me.

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 05/08/2023 09:21

@smokingcarriageonly,
Looks really good on you 🙂👌

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 05/08/2023 09:23

@BurningTheToast,
It is really lovely, I agree.

I'm sure one of S&B's luxury handbag pros will be on the case for you soon!

BurningTheToast · 05/08/2023 10:42

@MissoniIMPOSSIBLE

That’s true - I’ll take it there later!

thanks

I have come one because I
Was on Facebook and got an ad for a site called dark academia which was selling "green gables" souvenir t shirts

incognitomosqiito · 05/08/2023 10:47

I think my question is, isn't it hard to dress like this between say May and September?

BangingOn · 05/08/2023 10:55

Re the Rachel dresses, they also look really good belted if you want more definition at the waist. I have 3 different prints and tend to wear them with narrow, elasticated belts (way nicer than they sound!) which give more shape.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 05/08/2023 11:07

@smokingcarriageonly that looks gorgeous on you 😍 I love the soft, blended colours of One Hundred Stars stuff. Sadly that dress would be trailing on the floor on me, and I am also blessed with norkage so I'm not sure it would work.

Thanks to whoever it was who mentioned that film. That's my rainy Saturday viewing sorted!

I can't do wool either! It is cotton or cashmere and nothing else here. And even cashmere isn't tolerable on bare skin.

Love this style, though. I'm not very good with skirts but have a few really wide pairs of culottes and trousers, mainly from Toast, which fit in well.

I can't wear cashmere, either. Lots of very rough fabrics are out, too, as I find them uncomfortable to wear.

To a PP who said they don't suit brown or wear brown shoes - I don't think you have to. I can wear brown, but love autumn clothes for the claret, maroon, deep green, aubergine, russet -red colours. Those are totally me.

Ummm... I just wore a long black wool cloak (to a wedding). (Over a vintage Laura Ashley green silk dress). In my defense the bride and groom really like Lord of the Rings. And I don't really mind veering toward fancy dress!

A few skirts that could be useful ..

I love all of these! Drama and texture ❤

Really enjoy seeing the various interpretations of the look.

IMO the summer version of this style is a bit Meryl Streep's riding outfits in Out of Africa, mixed in with Rachel Weisz as Evelyn in The Mummy.

That sounds a great wedding!

For any potential brides looking for DA inspiration, I love the vibe of this one from:

What an amazing location it must have been, too.

@smokingcarriageonly That dress looks fab on you. Also I had never heard the word zaftig and I love it! I’m learning so much on this threadSmile

Me neither. Dress looks fab @smokingcarriageonly

OrangeSpicedBun · 05/08/2023 14:03

According to Dd I'm more 'dark cottagecore' but I love this thread so I'm staying. It's my love of pattern that ruins it apparently.

Going through my wardrobe I need skirts like @highlandcoo 's. I think I'm after a long dark black/brown/charcoal skirt in cotton velvet or textured wool. To go with blouse as attached. I'm an 18 unfortunately at mo. All the best stuff is in the smaller sizes.

Dd studies/works in education she is very petite and does the dark academia look for cover supervising ect. It makes her look more mature apparently. Need to find her a nice oversized blazer as pic below too.

@MoltenLasagne inspiration for every season is Evie from The Mummy 😍

Darkacademic · 05/08/2023 14:33

@OrangeSpicedBun have you tried House of Bruar for those? They do our sort of sizes (I’m a 16) and still do a decent range. Pricey, but regular sales. I have a list… Would needlecord work as a velvet alternative? I used to have an ankle length swishy dark purple very fine needlecord skirt that looked almost like velvet and I am gutted that 15 years or so ago I got rid of it.

I have just invested in an olive cotton v neck from Paul James - got a sign up discount. They have exactly what I want in neutral but only in a M, and the norks won’t be up for that. Hopefully something similar will come back in the autumn. And meantime khaki is great for hiding snot and possibly jammy dodger crumbs.

Stay and enjoy though, we won’t ban you for your love of pattern! 🤣 “Dear mumsnet HQ, please ban OSB because she likes…gasp…pattern… and she is not dark enough for us”.

OrangeSpicedBun · 05/08/2023 15:02

😄I know, felt should confess. Thanks for House of Bruar. I do like their stuff and have been looking at their boots. This skirt is cheap enough for me but synthetic. Trying to avoid corduroy but needlecord might work!

Surprised there is quite a bit of 'House of Bruar' on Vinted....might be a speedy afternoon

Oooooooh….excuse me while I nip off and have a look…

Kdubs1981 · 05/08/2023 16:58

I've been lurking on this thread for a while as I'm not sure how much o have to
Contribute.

Well.... it's been expensive 🤣. Ordered the One Hundred Stars Rachel in stork cigar and Dhurrie. Oops!

I think some of the sezane stuff fits the bill, but too expensive for me: I like some of the la redoute pointelle jumper/cardigans as they often look similar, but I admit they're often synthetics, but sometimes a merino blend
