Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

@MissoniIMPOSSIBLE it would be great if you wanted to post a few photos once you're home Smile

Alternatively, there’s this (it was the first thing that sprung to my mind anyways)

https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745341064/dark-academia/

might not be what you’re looking for though

I am actually an academic and that looks an interesting read. Thanks. 😁

This is a lovely thread.

As a pp said like the idea of Annie Hall but really I'm very English so probably more Harriet Vane/Linda Radlett and maybe Emily Brontë when I have a head cold are my DA alter egos Grin

triggers34 · 03/08/2023 21:03

What a great thread ! I've been putting together outfits today too. I just walked the dog sporting brown checked trousers , white linen shirt and a brown tweed style jacket. I have a grey men's cotton sweater vest by blue harbour which I'm contemplating dyeing it brown to go with the trousers 🤔

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2023 21:06

@highlandcoo Her stuff is cut so well for real women. If ever I come into money, I'm going to have some of her pirate boots.

mightymalties · 03/08/2023 21:42

Redbubble are good for DA t shirts. I got the cream Michaelangelo one seen on many a DA roundup, and a gorgeous olive green Dellecher Shakespeare for lounging. There's multitudes of designs, and the quality is excellent!.

Wishing I could fine nice flat shoes though. I have a lovely collection, but after an injury I now need to replace with extra wide ones 😪 any recommendations? DMs unfortunately aren't wide enough, but it doesn't stop me ogling the new brown mary janes they've just released!

highlandcoo · 03/08/2023 21:50

They're nice boots Remus. Good heel height too. Are you size 36 or 41 - all they have left sadly?

I do recommend Rieker for comfort. I'm a real boot person - don't have pretty feet but even more so I just really love the look of boots. Much better than shoes imo.

A pleasure @HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas, it’s good

And happy pirate booting @highlandcoo 😊

OrangeSpicedBun · 04/08/2023 00:31

Here are my DA picks. I'm coveting the VW cloak but no pennies at moment. I tend to nod more to DA I have a lovely tweed coat but it's Tommy Hilifiger feels amazing on and I always get complimented. I'm.after a dark camel/tobacco trench if anyone sees one? Needs to be cooler as I'm a 'Deep Winter'. I wear a lot of dark purple/burgundy/ deep green, chocolate grey and black basically.

Harris Tweed Satchel

Hobbs kickflare skirt

Naice silk blouse

another nice silk blouse

love this I could make it work as DA

knitted tank top

Joules always did a nicely waisted blazer

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 04/08/2023 07:47

@highlandcoo
Ooh, fabulous skirts, in lovely shades and shape.

In case it hasn't been mentioned Other Stories often do blouses and shirts that have an antiquey look to them that would work with that style. For example I recently bought this one in black (they do it in white too) and refer to it as my Victorian Widow blouse

One of the loveliest I've ever seen. Lucky you. Am envious 🙂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/08/2023 08:46

I saw a lovely Edwardian-esque blouse the other day. Annoyingly, I can't remember where!

Darkacademic · 04/08/2023 10:15

So I have signed up to mumsnet solely for the purpose of joining in this thread! Also an academic but had not realised until a few days ago that my natural style (or lack thereof - cords, woolly jumpers, shirts) is an actual aesthetic. Me, being part of an aesthetic. I was dumbstruck. Gumswizzled. And obviously have turned it into a full on project. 😂
I don’t know if you lovely people have found the thread in classics called something like “thanks to S and B I am now winning in the pursuit of elegance” but it is brilliant. And involves spreadsheets 😂 All about how to look at your wardrobe and plan it/plan purchases so that it covers your actual life and how to make it work together while making you feel good, rather than being some random capsule wardrobe thing that doesn’t work with sticky snotty toddlers.

anyway, I am reviewing what I have and am in search of brown jeggings, a heavy cotton neutrally/oatmeally jumper and trying not to press buttons that link to my credit card on Celtic and co…. I am loving seeing the outfits though! Once I am no longer ill I will start adding to them!

And then we can begin on the light academia aesthetic as well…

Paperclipped · 04/08/2023 11:04

Nonsense, @Darkacademic -- there are no Light Academics.

Well, apart from someone I used to work with who shall remain nameless, who used to wear ruffled gimgham frocks, children's backpacks and brightly-coloured wellies, and do performative hopscotch skipping down the corridor to her office.

While I ground my teeth in her general direction looking like an older, scruffier Wednesday Addams.

Paperclipped · 04/08/2023 11:05

@Darkacademic -- for jumpers, have you looked at The Knotty Ones?

smokingcarriageonly · 04/08/2023 12:52

Great thread!

I favour a look that I think of as Edwardian industrialist's wife meets Bloomsbury. It may be more flowing/pleated/drapey and less lacy than other styles here but it seems adjacent to my eye. (Like a PP I was an indie kid, plus a splash of 80s goth.)

I love these Rachel dresses, gorgeous with matching obi belt (not shown in link sadly): https://onehundredstars.co.uk/products/racheldresssstorkcigar
I wear a lot of old Czech glass necklaces and/or long strings of brown pearls with mine.

I keep this photo on my phone to keep me on the right track 😀

I have the Rachel dress (in a very undark academic colourway) but I cant get on with the neckline it makes me feel frumpy. I like the black version of your dress too!

OrangeSpicedBun · 04/08/2023 14:56

Ooh thank you...too much norkage to be a size 8 here. Dd might like !

Maxmara size 8 is massive though - you can see the shoulders are big on the model.

Darkacademic · 04/08/2023 16:47

Ooooh thank you both for the jumper suggestions! Love me a cable knit 😍

@Paperclipped I have no idea how you manage to restrain yourself from giving her a good kick up the backside on the way past. Who can be dealing with that sort of chirpiness on a day to day basis.

While I do like the idea of light academia in a punting on the Cherwell a la Peter and Harriet in Gaudy Night type way, sadly in Scotland with stone walls and a north facing study window, while everyone else sweltered in the recent heatwave I sat in my woolly granny slippers and considered illicitly putting the heating on. So it would be totally wasted on my wardrobe. Dark academia it is!

Yes, it's a bit of a marmite style. Do you have the belt too? That might make a difference.
I'm small busted with a high waist and a deep v works for me. I arrange the fabric in the right place and belt it high at the smallest point on my waist. It's so fluid and drapey, I don't find the neckline bulky but I can see not everyone would love it.
I also have it in a green marble pattern. Tried to attach a pic but it won't load.
