Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

@RedLem0nade - thank you. That is a lovely thing to hear! ❤️

@Darkacademic yes, you're right. A beret would look a little more urban chic than the flat cap - which says a day at the races with the horse trainers 😁

@Bookist ah your nails are absolutely gorgeous - and I love your ring! Unfortunately I started biting my nails again last year, having stopped about 20 years ago. I'm finding it very hard to break the habit again 😩

Thank you! Get a gel manicure to stop you nibbling x

Thanks for the jewellery recommendations- I’m going to “shop” my wardrobe and jewellery box to see what I come up with. I definitely have some brooches and some dark beaded necklaces in there! I had quite a dark academia vibe at university (tweed and cords and cashmere) and was given some of the jewellery as gifts then.

helenahandcart78 · 23/09/2023 15:40

Meant to say @Bookist I've binging Peaky Blinders this past week for the first time and I absolutely love it. Aunt Pol is a definite DA inspiration. So sad about Helen McCrory - she was an amazing actress.

Yes, I think brooches are a really interesting look. Might have to trawl a few charity shops and build up a collection!

Anyone up for a discussion on hats? These are my faves. I love wearing the fake fur one - I feel all "War and Peace" Russian princess when I put it on. But is it DA as in Dark Academic or DA as in Downton Abbey? 🤔

Hello, can I join in? Think I’ve been almost in this style for a while though had never heard of Dark Academia till I read this thread, just dark colours have always been my favourites .
Thats a beautiful nail polish, professionally done? Or a colour you can tell us?

Antique shops can be a great place to pick up jewellery inexpensively, costume for sure & definitely brooches as they’re way out of fashion in the antique world these days
Been searching for a dark brown cardigan, where have they all gone? Every colour but brown it seems. Have you dig out my knitting needles.

Darklane · 23/09/2023 16:00

Have to 🙁

helenahandcart78 · 23/09/2023 16:12

Hello @Darklane and welcome to the best thread on Mumsnet 😁 (with the nicest people 🤗)!
That's a good call about antique shops for jewellery - I hadn't thought of that. I really love a brooch - something almost rebellious about it as it is so far out of the modern look.
I will keep an eye out for brown cardigans for you. I think some shops are reticent about brown colours as not everyone goes for them. But I love rich chocolate brown or dark rusty tan. Mixed with navy or dark olive green, the colours are so louche and luxuriant.

I'm really excited to start watching it, it's taken so long because DH has a totally irrational objection to the Brummie accent.

Hello Darklane and thank you for the compliment. It's a professionally done gel manicure and I think the colour was 'plum' and the brand is Gellish I think?

Thank you. I'm also hunting down the perfect brown jumper or cardigan, but it's so tricky because I can't wear anything with even 2% of real wool.

Has anyone come across a mini skirt in a thick, stretchy faux wool? Used to have one in black from Benetton back in the 90s and it was such a wardrobe staple. I also really want a short, straight cut kilt that isn't A line. I'm not sure they're even made though?

highlandcoo · 23/09/2023 17:47

Hi all, I'm so pleased this thread has taken off so incredibly well!

I'm still abroad in the sunshine and still wearing very non-DA outfits but really enjoying reading all your posts and seeing the photos. I'll be joining in once back home for sure.

I'm also going to sit and make a list (in a lovely notebook of course) of all the shops and websites mentioned in the thread. And planning a visit to Lanx boots in Manchester - looking forward to that! I have tricky feet and there's no point in ordering boots online. I've tried and they've all had to go straight back ..

Darklane if you are a knitter, there's a great wee shop in Lancaster called Northern Yarn who also sell online. I bought their Herdwick wool last time; it's a lovely natural brown/grey colour. The woman who opened it wanted to support local sheep farmers and has a lovely range of wools. Lots of brown - my favourite colour!

I'll be starting my jumper soon. It'll be a nice project for the darker evenings 😊

@Bookist fab nails! I don't have my nails done often but when I do that's just the look I go for.

and @helenahandcart78 great hats! I'll send a photo of mine in a couple of weeks. One is amazing but a bit quirky and I really need a tweed coat to go with it and I haven't found one yet ..

@bookist House of Bruar has some short kilts though they are ££. Not sure if this is non-A line enough?

@Bookist the Brummie accent is surprisingly alluring when you're listening to Cillian Murphy speaking it 🤣🤣

Oh that's a thing of beauty! I would want it to be quite a bit shorter though.

So, I've just ceremoniously lit my first White Company Autumn candle of the season. It's actually bittersweet because it's something I've always done on the anniversary of my Dad's death. He's been gone twenty eight years today, we lost him far, far too soon x

Oh my heart goes out to you ❤️ But that is a lovely ceremony to have. We lost my dad 10 years ago and I still think of him every day. I don't have any rituals though. Other than when I'm making a roast pork with crackling and I always think "Ooh dad, you'd love this with a bit of apple sauce and a small diluted whiskey! 😁☺️

Sounds very interesting. Not that far from me. Another brilliant wool shop I visit a lot is Black Sheep.

Aah that's cute. My Dad always smoked cigars and even now the smell of one takes me right back to being his little girl. Sad that I don't know anyone who smokes them anymore x
