Observations from the capital

I’ve yet to see anyone with one of those Uniqlo bags that have gone viral.

Longchamp Le Pliage bags are very popular and I have seen numerous people with them.

I have not seen many of anyone decked out in obvious designer gear. I’ve seen plenty of people with designer bags.

People dress how they want and I have not seen any noticeable trends other than to say people are dressing for comfort ( trainers).

The capital as in London…?

the Uniqlo bag is everywhere, I’ve had one for years super handy

most people dress down in London - v boring!

Ridingaroundonbuses · 27/07/2023 14:58

Yes as in London

I past someone with an identical Uniqlo bag to mine, on the Millenium Bridge 2 days ago - we do exist! 🙂🤣

Leafytrees · 29/07/2023 07:23

I miss living in London and seeing such a variety of amazing outfits every day. I love where I love now but everyone dresses more homogeneously outside London.

Same here. I always build in some people-watching time when I visit London now. I don't bother doing this where I live.

Ridingaroundonbuses · 29/07/2023 08:43

I think in total I saw three of the Uniqlo bags!

Just got back.

I didn’t notice any Uniqlo bags but did see them in the shop and thought they were lovely.

A few people (including me) in sequins at the theatre.

Still a lot of women (including me) in dresses and trainers but far fewer white trainers and more colourful or black ones.

Lots of pale denim wide leg jeans. Lots of denim midi and maxi skirts. Lots of loose black cotton dresses with shirts open over them. Lots of groovy wide leg trousers.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2023 08:57

I was guilty of the Longchamp bag.

LimeCheesecake · 29/07/2023 09:17

Where in London though?! I always want to ask this - because if you are in a touristy bit, you probably aren’t seeing Londoners but people visiting for the day/holiday.

(I dress differently for a day sightseeing and visiting art galleries as I would going to meet a friend for lunch.)

Skinnermarink · 29/07/2023 09:34

Sounds like you’re just observing the day trippers/tourists really though. Whereas if you’d popped to brunch in Herne Hill or Clapham Old Town you’d see a more relevant demographic of how people who live in London are actually dressing.

Agree. The Le Pliage bags is a giveaway that it's day trippers/tourists.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2023 09:41

Does it matter? Being an ‘actual’ Londoner doesn’t make you instantly sartorially superior.

khakitrousers · 29/07/2023 09:45

I live in London. In the last week the only sartorial choices I've in anyway noticed (both at DC's swimming lessons) have been a man carrying one of those Anya Hindmarch supermarket bags, and a lady in a green/ flowery midi but with sandals.

I've been wearing trousers a lot as the weather has been so shite. I have a lovely pair of cream, square toe Mary Janes that I have worn once for fear of ruining them in the rain.

bingohandjob · 29/07/2023 09:46

I love my Uniqlo bag. In the last year or two I've seen them in abundance in London, Rome, Reykjavik, Krakow, Berlin - very likely on lots of fellow tourists but they are super handy for commuting, airports etc. I've got an old Boden version of Le Pliage style bag and it's so bloody uncomfortable to carry.

AceofPentacles · 29/07/2023 09:47

I was in central this week and everyone looked really shabby . Primark leggings etc.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/07/2023 09:50

I love London, where what you want because no one gives a fuck. The 'Im going to London what shall I wear?' threads always make me smile. I think it's because people do still tend to dress up outside of the cities although post pandemic a bit less.

Bet01 · 29/07/2023 09:52

I live in London and have the Uniqlo bag in black. It’s perfect for dog walking. Funnily enough I’ve seen tons of people with them recently; younger and older. They’re pretty ubiquitous (centre of town as well as South East where I live) I’m also currently wearing wide-leg light beige cropped jeans, and a white tank vest with loose shirt over the top. With Birkenstocks obvs. A walking London cliche 😁

Harrythehappypig · 29/07/2023 09:56

What is the Uniqlo bag? I’ve just looked on the website and can’t see anything remarkable

GetOurraMeWay · 29/07/2023 10:00

I have noticed on my commute that the vast vast majority of women (including me) are wearing trainers and backpacks to commute. Gone are the days of designer handbags and heels. If they're like me they change into smart shoes at the office mostly. I've been living here for 20 years btw. The most popular backpacks seem to be Roka, Herschel, and Fjallraven. New balance or adidas trainers mostly.

Gowlett · 29/07/2023 10:03

Love style-watching in London. I lived there & Paris in my 20s. Been back several times over the years. I live in a capital city that’s not known for its style, we’re more bohemian here.

Recently though a group of four young women (late 20s / 30) caught my eye. They were all wearing a variation on the same outfit. Polyester floral midi dress, denim jacket, white trainers.

They were from the UK. I’ve seen that outfit here as well, on older women. But I noticed it because of the sheer lack of imagination. I would never have dressed like my friends at that age.

jinnytoo · 29/07/2023 10:12

I agree with the posters that it's usually more casual than other centres, with dresses down being the order of the day.

I don't see many of those Uniqlo bags. They are unremarkable I suppose. To me they look like a 'bumbag' you tired of wearing and draped over your shoulder instead.

hopeishere · 29/07/2023 10:26

I'm in a French city and the style is very relaxed. Some women are very stylish but more casual style than really dressed up. Lots of trainers on everyone!!

High stiletto shoes are so dated now. I've a colleague who wears them and she looks like she's just arrived from the 90s.

TheOGCCL · 29/07/2023 10:27

I love style watching, both visitors and residents, in London. There are plenty of that Uniqlo bag about. My 70 odd year old parents both have one. Hand held bags are less popular these days, first it was cross bodies, now its bum bags worn cross body. Hand held bags look more glamorous and elegant, especially if worn in the crook of the arm, but no one is really glamorous anymore (special occasions maybe) so they can look a bit out of place. I see Le Pliages sometimes but not nearly as many as ten years ago, normally the larger size with the long handles in a classic colour. If you have a lot of stuff, rucksacks are worn more, they fit in with that casual, sporty aesthetic.

The trendy ones are wearing baggy bottoms, big trainers, short, tight tops with high necks (regardless of figure, I say this as a good thing) and minimal jewellery. Not far off Sporty Spice from 1998. Baggy shirt, fleece or some other oversized cover up on top.

Gowlett · 29/07/2023 10:41

The girls in the floral dresses all had MK bags.
