I’ve yet to see anyone with one of those Uniqlo bags that have gone viral.

Longchamp Le Pliage bags are very popular and I have seen numerous people with them.

I have not seen many of anyone decked out in obvious designer gear. I’ve seen plenty of people with designer bags.

People dress how they want and I have not seen any noticeable trends other than to say people are dressing for comfort ( trainers).

OP posts:

That Uniqlo bag looks perfect for dog walking

Saverage · 29/07/2023 19:00

I live in London, I'd be hard pressed to summarise what women are wearing, it seems so varied.

Can confirm though sightings of men in suits recently, looked so odd, it's been a while.

Sounds like you’re just observing the day trippers/tourists really though. Whereas if you’d popped to brunch in Herne Hill or Clapham Old Town you’d see a more relevant demographic of how people who live in London are actually dressing.

Well you'd see what people who live there wear.

I've seen that godawful bumbag bag once in the city I live in and I don't recall seeing it at all in London a couple of weeks ago.

I'm a bit bemused by the notion of all these terribly cool Londoners who apparently never leave their own villages so that anyone you see in the West End or Covent Garden or Mayfair or any of the music venues in Camden or the V& A etc must be a tourist or a day tripper.

NatashaDancing · 29/07/2023 19:15

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/07/2023 09:39

Agree. The Le Pliage bags is a giveaway that it's day trippers/tourists.

And ? So what?

NatashaDancing · 29/07/2023 19:17

As worn by deckchair and fairground ride attendants the world over.

Damned by faint praise!

I use one as my dog walking bag and can confirm it’s perfect!

Whoops meant to quote ……

yes I have one as my dog walking bag and it’s perfect for that ;-)

I'm from a northern market town and everyone has a Uniqlo bag.
I use le pilage as my shopping bag.
I wear dresses and trainers.
Don't think London is anymore stylish than the rest of the uk

No, it doesn’t, but if you want to draw conclusions on how Londoners dress (for whatever reason - seems to be a common concern on S&B…), it does matter where you people-watch. Covent Garden vs Crystal Palace, etc.

Except nobody is drawing any conclusions particularly, other than a couple of 'real Londoners' whose main conclusion is that sneering at tourists is okay.

The OP certainly wasn't saying that she had reached conclusions about what 'Londoners' wear, simply reporting on some of the things she'd seen.

Having never been to Hearne Hill or Clapham Old Town, I can only assume that people wear a mixture of things - like in any other place.

stevalnamechanger · 29/07/2023 21:00

I live in London , SW and everyone has le pilage longchamps - common as muck here with the mum crowd

It's ahead of trends for sure .

White trainers and dresses / denim jackets was summer maybe 2-3 years ago yet in my home town seems to be hot new fashion for 40+

Ha! Not messy (well a bit!) but more a day sightseeing in a city like London can be a bit hard work. So if I was doing a day out sightseeing, I’d wear trainers, comfy clothes that allow for layers to go on and off. Going for lunch with a friend i might wear trainers but more likely in summer some flat sandals/shoes or loafers - fine for a short walk from public transport to restaurant door, not really for full day on feet.

if the weather was a bit “British summer 2023”, to meet a friend I might put on a trench, or just carry a brolly, but if I was going to be outside for a lot of the day walking from one place to another even in light rain, I’d stick on a rain coat.

if I’m just meeting a friend and not being out all day, then I’d carry a small bag that would fit phone, purse, keys, kindle for train/tube. If I was going to be out all day, probably a big bag like a Longchamp or a rucksack.

I do find this interesting though, do others not dress for endurance if they are going sightseeing for a day?! Last time I went to another city to go sightseeing for the day was a trip to Bath, I did 20,000 steps that day, surely even those who don’t wear trainers every day are putting them on for that?!

thanks for reply- had imagined you meant that you flopped/relaxed/dressed down for friend meet but maybe - kinda fitting in with theme of thread - dressed up/to impress when on the art gallery circuit.
In fact you sound eminently practical - yep for a full day wandering round london you need to be prepared.

meatbaseddessert · 30/07/2023 10:54

Man alive. That Uniqlo bag is fucking hideous. Looks like an American tourist's bum bag (fanny pack) worn cross body. Blee.

NatashaDancing · 30/07/2023 10:54

I don't. I do a lot of walking around cities, I just wear comfortable shoes or boots depending on the weather. I don't own trainers- they're hideous and don't go with anything.

Isn't it just? Being bang "on trend" doesn't change that.

I don't know who that is so it doesn't help me but I'm guessing it's not good 🤣

My regular 'clutch bag' is actually an old-but-fancy makeup bag, @BlessYourBlackCottonSocksOnTheRider 😀

Grey suits/tan shoes combo seems to be back (for men, that is). All I have noticed being out and about in central London is that a lot of women are definitely wearing trainers for comfort, altho I have no idea of brands.

Now off to look up this Uniqlo bag.

Is that the one in corduroy? corduroy is 'on trend' now?

I'd never get everything for a day out in that. I'll stick to my bottomless 'found in a charity shop yonks ago' shoulder bag.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2023 11:10

A menswear shop in Shoreditch had the most beautiful fine corduroy suits in pink and a light sage green.

RampantIvy · 30/07/2023 11:38

To me they look like a 'bumbag' you tired of wearing and draped over your shoulder instead.

I am going to London next week and might just take my number and wear it across my shoulder instead Grin
I have never seen anyone with the Uniqlo bag where I live.

I don't own trainers- they're hideous and don't go with anything.

I think they look fine with jeans and casual trousers, and for me they are the most comfortable footwear I own.

I'm glad I found this thread because I will add a visit to Uniqlo on to my itinerary.

BlessYourBlackCottonSocksOnTheRider · 30/07/2023 11:46

Oh @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie i want a safe green corduroy suit now. I might get away with men’s, depending on the cut.

Can't remember the shop name, sadly. The green was beautiful.

clowniform · 30/07/2023 11:53

When trends go as viral as the Uniqlo bag / Zara dress / floral midi+trainers outfit etc. it's usually because they hit a sweet spot of practical, achievable and sufficiently aesthetically appealing to a large number of people, no? (Full disclosure: I like 1, skipped 2 and no longer wear 3.) A bit bemused at the accompanying strength of backlash. Maybe it's just a level of outrage at differing tastes and lifestyles this Londoner 😉 can't muster as a self-preservation mechanism. Like @Saverage I see such diversity I'd be dead of apoplexy midway through my morning commute if reacting so strongly to all the looks that were hideous to me. It also quickly nips in the bud any idea of being the lone unbrainwashed 'not like the other girls' True Styliste.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2023 11:54

Found it!
