I’ve yet to see anyone with one of those Uniqlo bags that have gone viral.

Longchamp Le Pliage bags are very popular and I have seen numerous people with them.

I have not seen many of anyone decked out in obvious designer gear. I’ve seen plenty of people with designer bags.

People dress how they want and I have not seen any noticeable trends other than to say people are dressing for comfort ( trainers).

To me they look like a 'bumbag' you tired of wearing and draped over your shoulder instead.

I am going to London next week and might just take my number and wear it across my shoulder instead Grin
I have never seen anyone with the Uniqlo bag where I live.

I don't own trainers- they're hideous and don't go with anything.

I think they look fine with jeans and casual trousers, and for me they are the most comfortable footwear I own.

I'm glad I found this thread because I will add a visit to Uniqlo on to my itinerary.

Yeah, fair enough re jeans and trousers - they don't go with anything I own.

That's nice

clowniform · 30/07/2023 12:11

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie what did you go to see? An audience in sequins sounds appealingly civilised.

BHRK · 30/07/2023 12:15

I’ve lived in London for years and really, anything goes. Except heels, most people have ditched those. Comfort is key. People are still stylish but casual. You do however see people dressing up a bit more for nice dinners/theatre though it’s not compulsory

Cabaret - sequins felt appropriate.

It's incredible btw.

Bwahaha!
Appropriate indeed and more considerate than a bowler hat. Or monkey suit.

Marie2023 · 30/07/2023 12:35

Which Uniqlo bag?

Too humid for a monkey suit.

I’m in east London; it’s all a bit identikit here. You can almost tell which part of London people are from just by their outfits ATM.

Anyway, here it’s:

Linen shirts over dresses
Long baggy t shirts over maxi skirts
Various shades of cream/white
very ugly trainers
clogs/birkenstocks
monochrome (white high neck vest, black midi or maxi skirt)
denim midi/maxi
addidas speziale with midi skirts & ankle socks

plus rescue dogs and toddlers. They are everywhere round here.

Middleagedmeangirls · 30/07/2023 13:22

I live in London. I wear skinny jeans and Ugg boots when it's cold and floral dresses /jumpsuits with Birkies or trainers when the weather is nicer.

I LOVE the ubiquity of the floral midi and flat shoes look. Throngs of women in bright dresses make even a grubby city like London look pretty. Much better than the winter when most people are wearing dark coats and jackets.

What a nice comment.

I do too, everything is so pretty these days.

Saverage · 30/07/2023 14:41

I walked today from St Pauls to Tate Modern, and then to Oxford St. For this thread I actually looked at people rather than just daydreaming.

Out of 100s of people I saw 1 Uniqlo bag, many floral midis (though no denim jackets). There was no consistent style, everyone was overwhelmingly casual. If I'd been dropped there with no idea what year it was it could have been any year in the last 20 years.

I'm sure evening wear and less tourist areas have more defined looks.

I had jeans, trainers and an old kimono style top.

Keykaty · 30/07/2023 14:49

I love hearing and looking via your links at what people are wearing now. I'm an oldie but I like fashion and nice things even if I don't bother too much with it all myself now!

Anyway, sorry to say but the Pliage bag really does remind me of Roy Cropper. My now deceased mother bought one in Spain hundreds of years ago and it folded up and all! Used it for going to the market in the town. I really don't see the joy in Pliage myself, but each to their own.

I confess to owning a Uniqlo. Love it. I like summery straw tote bags also, but they must have a zip or they are out.

I wear trousers a lot, mostly light cotton/linen, I have all colours. Teamed with a nice short sleeve top/T shirt gets me anywhere. Footwear is usually flat shoes, either espadrilles or similar. Trainers are for when out walking, I am so out of touch! I like midi dresses in light material too, with either a short cropped shirt or long sleeve shirt on top. Espadrilles with them, never trainers. Sorry now.

How am I doing for 60+ lol. 😀

Middleagedmeangirls · 30/07/2023 15:01

I've been on a few trips recently where the evening dress code has been on the formal side (cruises, business conventions etc).

I've found that most of the midair dresses I wear during the day with flat shoes dress up very well as evening wear - styling them with heels, a smarter bag, a good blow dry and more glamorous makeup can transform them.

Jobalob · 30/07/2023 15:19

I’ve noticed lots of flat black loafers as work shoes

Tiqtaq · 31/07/2023 06:35

Love the idea of a midair dress @Middleagedmeangirls!

Same here. I always build in some people-watching time when I visit London now. I don't bother doing this where I live.

So you're not people watching..... You're clothes watching.

I live Oop North, and I LOVE people watching! It's the people not the clothes that make it fascinating for me - there's so much more than clothes to observe! It's the little mannerisms, the stupid things they do without realising, watching the interaction between others they're with. I'd find it so boring if it was just their clothes I was looking at. (Unless that's because we aren't as outlandish as Brighton for example!)

RampantIvy · 31/07/2023 08:07

Every time I click on posts like these I think I must remember to see what people are wearing, nd then I always forget.

The only times I really notice clothes and footwear on other people is if they look exceptionally well dressed or are wearing totally unsuitable clothes and shoes. For example: I once saw a woman teetring down the steep footpath to High Force in Teesdale wearing stilettoes.

tenbob · 31/07/2023 08:21

The Uniqlo bag is just a take on wearing a bum bag cross body which 20-somethings have been doing for 4 years.
It’s less an every day thing, more something you would take to a festival (including London day festival), concert, riding a bike or whenever you need to take stuff and it not to get in the way when you’re dancing/cycling/having a picnic

Im in SW London where it’s floral dresses or wide leg jeans with a vest, or active wear most of the time
Trainers of choice are Golden Goose, Veja or adidas

Ha! When I saw your previous post about fine corduroy men's suits in pink and sage green in Shoreditch, I knew you were referring to Timothy Everest on Redchurch Street. And you were!

They are beautiful. Just imagine being the man who could a) afford one and b) be brave/stylish enough to wear it.

Man alive. That Uniqlo bag is fucking hideous. Looks like an American tourist's bum bag (fanny pack) worn cross body. Blee.

I agree - they are awful. Thank goodness they don't seem to have caught on where I live.

I know men who wear these kind of suits. One ex of mine has a beautiful pale blue seersucker suit. I miss that suit far more than I miss him!

To return to topic, as a resident of zone one, I can't say I've noticed either the Uniqlo bag or any Le Pilage. I do see plenty of high heels when I go out for dinner.

It's all relative though, and entirely dependant on where you happen to be, and who your eyes happen to rest on.
