I’ve yet to see anyone with one of those Uniqlo bags that have gone viral.

Longchamp Le Pliage bags are very popular and I have seen numerous people with them.

I have not seen many of anyone decked out in obvious designer gear. I’ve seen plenty of people with designer bags.

People dress how they want and I have not seen any noticeable trends other than to say people are dressing for comfort ( trainers).

I was in London yesterday. In Oxford Street there was no way of telling who was local and who wasn't.

However, in the city it was pretty obvious who the working population was and who were visitors. All the men working in the city seemed to wear the same uniform of navy blue suit/trousers, white shirt and brown shoes; and the women wore dresses. Some wore heels.

The visitors were dressed very casually and all wore very comfortable trainers designed for a lot of walking.

I would stake my cat on there not being a single London local on Oxford Street Grin

It was around lunchtime. I used to work just off Oxford St and would often be in Oxford St around lunchtime, so there could have been some localish people there.

TennesseeTravis · 05/08/2023 13:11

It's interesting to see those le pillage bags being on trend. My mum had one years ago and she would be almost 80 now if alive. I never saw it as trendy, just very mumsy!

Not impressed with that Uniqlo bag - very disappointing after the hype on this thread!

ZittiEBuoni · 05/08/2023 13:15

I spent a very pleasurable hour by the splash pool in the middle of the V&A the other week and was fascinated by the diversity of styles I saw - a few flowery midis with white trainers, yes, but many people had their own look, from a very glam woman in a bodycon orange patterned shift to an older woman in a long sparkly shirt over jeans and vest top. Round here it's all whatever's in the sale at Sports Direct, dull as ditchwater.

Teen children were talking about the Uniqlo bags a few weeks ago. Apparently they're popular with 'teens on bikes' and I can see how that might work. They're quite practical and light.

TennesseeTravis · 05/08/2023 13:23

Yes I can see the practicalities of the bag.

But what do I know, I have a Radley bag which was an present from DH. But I use it because it would hurt his feelings not to although I know it's very uncool! (And it's a decent size so quite handy).

KnittedCardi · 05/08/2023 13:25

All DD's group of mid twenties buy off Vinted or Thrift plus. They are therefore a complete mis-mash of styles and decades and definitely not on trend. She does have the Uniqlo bag though!

She also has that big rollover top waterproof back pack thing for work.

ZittiEB, that’s a top spot for London style-watching!
It’s exactly where I saw some gorgeous outfits on women, both young & older, last time I was in town.

I complimented a couple ladies, my own age (mid-40s, on their style recently (in my home city) & they were thrilled. They were looking very un-blah, gotta say!

I hurried along a bit of Oxford Street on Thursday evening, before driving down Gilbert Street to get back to Mayfair 😁

BatshitCrazyWoman · 05/08/2023 14:16

*diving, not driving!

RampantIvy · 05/08/2023 14:26

I saw loads of "city types" with those. I had a look at the Uniwlo bags in the shop and was unimpressed. I might as well use my bum bag.

We have been known to make the occasional hit and run raid on the kitchenware department in John Lewis 😁

LittleMoReturns · 05/08/2023 18:40

I travel from suburban London to Shoreditch most days and fashion watch a lot.

Le Pliage bags were fashionable work bags pre-pandemic. They’re not naff, but not ‘on trend’ anymore. Shoulder bags for women seem to have massively died a death along with heels.

I also haven’t seen many of those Uniqlo bags.

Very few floral midi dresses this summer.
Colourful trainers more popular than white trainers on young adults.
Teens have fully embraced 90s fashion.

My observations!

Thing is, unless you ask them, how do you know you are right?

I work in the City and casual clothes with comfy shoes describes 80% of my department (tech).

The population of London is getting on for 10million; it is very unlikely that none of them ever venture into John Lewis or Selfridges.

And presumably the odd local or two works there? And pops out at lunchtime?

Camdenish · 05/08/2023 21:38

Will you drop Fluff off at mine with his litter tray and some Dreamies?

I was doing a walking tour, so I was referring to the people in the tour. Most of them were American.

As for floral midi dresses, it hasn't exactly been the weather for them.

LondonLovie · 05/08/2023 21:40

I'm laughing at this hard, as you might tell from my user name where I live. I love my Uniqlo bag and wear it most days, and have a Longchamp bag which is v old and not battered now, but another staple. I don't actually have an instagram account, Not sure if this makes me a fashion victim or tourist in my home city!

John Lewis, selfridges, the big primark at Marble Arch and M&S Marble Arch. Then lunch in either st Christopher’s place or Brasserie of light.

pretty standard Oxford street visit for most Londoners like me. Not often but if I need to be in the west end for some reason I’ll do an in and out of all of those.

RampantIvy · 06/08/2023 21:51

I can recommend the wine bar downstairs in John Lewis for lunch.

Lanadelrej · 19/12/2023 08:54

Re living this thread as really enjoyed it.
Any new observations?

Lanadelrej · 19/12/2023 09:04

I’m late to the party in regards of the cute camera bags!
I have few from TU in Sainsburys, however I now discovered the pompom.
They are beautiful in every colour possible.
sadly it’s a bit out of my budget.
However Im eyeing this one up. I spent last five days staring on it thinking will I use it?
I don’t like black bags only have one and that’s an old vintage LV I bought years ago second hand, but this croc..

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/12/2023 09:37

@Lanadelrej I’ve got a smaller one like that, vintage dark green croc and I use it a lot going out. Not sure how much use I’d get out of it during day.

Lanadelrej · 19/12/2023 09:43

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain from Pom Pom? I have seen that one too. It’s lovely,
In a fact they all are.
I am just planning to use it everyday as I don’t go anywhere special.
As I said I don’t even like black bags unless they have something special on them
ole pattern or print etc..
It must be shiny croc patent leather that attracts me to it.
I managed to find exactly the same one on Debenhams website for half price however not so shiny. Still want this one.
