I love the style on the model, the leisurely coolness about it- however I worry I will end up looking like an elderly ( I’m in my mid 40s)

Being a grandparent in your 40s and labelling something 'grannyish' aren't remotely related

🙄

PegasusReturns · 24/07/2023 19:20

Jeez it was sarcasm Hmm

Although I suspect @NatashaDancing given your constant sniping at me on this and another thread you’d argue up was down in an effort to feel superior. Go you Grin

I frequently hear accusations of ageism on this board which don’t bear out. It’s ok to acknowledge that different generations often favour different styles.

“Grannyish” is shorthand for a comfortable/practical look, perhaps a little dated, that pretty much everyone could conjure in their minds eye, the same as when some describes a look as “mummsy” or “sloany” or “gym bunny”.

Posters are taking themselves way to seriously.

Given you had referred in another thread to clothes being suitable for something like spinster aunts trying to hide bingo wings your sarcasm wasn't obvious.

I wouldn't use “Grannyish” or "mumsy" and neither conjure up a picture for me but both are creating false stereotypes. Neither are the same as “sloany” or “gym bunny”. Sloany and gym bunny refer to the clothes, not the person.

PegasusReturns · 24/07/2023 20:16

@NatashaDancing and black is white and night is day and up is down Hmm

your stalking me around threads today to sniffily tell me I’m wrong is really weirdly stalker-ish. Get a better hobby.

M340 · 24/07/2023 20:28

You've never described anything as mumsy or childish or anything like that?

Wow your pearls must be incredibly clean.

M340 · 24/07/2023 20:29

Below was for @NatashaDancing

windmill26 · 24/07/2023 20:35

Not a nice shade of beige. It looks really cheap even on the model. There are better jackets out there. Look in Uniqlo for something comfortable but with better shape ,material and colours .

No I haven't. There are better adjectives than either of them.

Or you (general) you could go down the route SlideandPolka took. "Korean dictator leisure wear" is a cleverer and more accurate depiction than "grannyish"

mdinbc · 24/07/2023 21:52

If you like the coat, get it. I kind of like it.

And face it, what was 'old' is now cool. Mom jeans, Dad trainers, even the ubiquitous puffer coat came from the 80's.

Get the jacket you like, OP. You may rock it and start a new trend.

M340 · 24/07/2023 22:01

I don't look for ways to sound cleverer when describing clothing.

No, it's easier just to use ageist stereotypes.

rickaaaayyyy · 25/07/2023 12:02

@NatashaDancing

Just out of curiosity, what do you think when elderly women call a piece of clothing or the likes 'grannyish'?

ohsheglows · 25/07/2023 12:08

Lanadelrej · 24/07/2023 14:38

@ohsheglows even darker than that? Would you please kindly send a pic? As now it makes me think it must be totally different colour than on the Joules website..
So not a beige at all.

Here's a pic for reference Smile

I don’t imagine it happens much. Ageism tends to be a young persons’ sport.

KanyeSouth · 25/07/2023 12:39

@Blossomtoes well a few people on this thread have said their older relatives use the word grannyish.

I've definitely heart my grandmother use it. She uses it when she talks about her hair and doesn't want to look like an 'old granny' and get a blue rinse so she still dyes her hair brown.

happywotsit · 25/07/2023 12:43

BadGranny · 24/07/2023 08:59

How about something like this instead?
http://www.carryonclothing.co.uk/reversible-coats-and-jackets-c17/ubu-reversible-zip-front-coat-p592

Ubu jackets and coats are good quality and most definitely NOT old.

Holy shit, that is horrendous and then the price 😳

That’s called denial.

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2023 13:31

Maybe - or just maybe even older women can be fashion conscious and keen to avoid grannyish clothes. My 81 year old mum would definitely consider that beige mac grannyish and not for her. There is a stereotype of what an old lady dresses like and it is one she wishes to avoid. Terms like 'grannyish', 'mumsy' and 'frumpy' are fashion shorthand - everyone knows what they mean.

KanyeSouth · 25/07/2023 14:20

@Blossomtoes

She isn't in denial. She is aware of her age and the fact she has great grandchildren.

She just doesn't want to look grannyish. There's nothing to deny, because she doesn't look grannyish.

Keykaty · 25/07/2023 14:23

I'm as old if not older than many "grannies" mentioned. I have a nice going out coat, a summer windproof and waterproof jacket from Trespass, folds up to nothing, a waterproof thigh length warm lined winter jacket with hood, INSIDE pockets, outside patch pockets and I bought it in the men's department. In fact due to my long arms I get a lot of stuff in the men's! Far better subtle styling and millions of pockets.

I do agree that some jackets can look like a uniform for a certain age (my own!) which I avoid.

Lanadelrej · 25/07/2023 16:12

@ohsheglows thank you, it’s lovely colour, really different than on the website.
