I love the style on the model, the leisurely coolness about it- however I worry I will end up looking like an elderly ( I’m in my mid 40s)

It's not great OP. Very grannyish.

Another ageist!

M340 · 24/07/2023 14:06

I've called something grannyish, it's not that deep 😂

Lanadelrej · 24/07/2023 14:38

@ohsheglows even darker than that? Would you please kindly send a pic? As now it makes me think it must be totally different colour than on the Joules website..
So not a beige at all.

What do "grannies" wear?

M340 · 24/07/2023 15:44

@NatashaDancing

Long pleated skirt or cotton trader elasticated waist trousers, some sort of ecco shoe, a floral T shirt or some sort or maybe a shirt for Sunday best, maybe a navy V neck cardigan and a broach.

Slightly darker than flesh coloured tights.

And coats like in the OP.

If somebody calls an outfit 'babyish' is that also ageist? Or if someone says 'it's something a child would wear?' Don't think there would be any uproar there.

I'd say that long pleated skirts are ubiquitous on 20-60 year old formally-dressed female office workers at the mo.

You're right about the rest though.

I’m a granny. Today I’m wearing black cocoon trousers, an oversized breton top and Doc Marten sandals. Is that grannyish?

@Blossomtoes

I have no idea. I don't judge what older women wear. I was asked what I think they were and my observation was what I wrote before hand.

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2023 17:02

You just did. In great detail. 🤷‍♀️

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/07/2023 17:25

That Sosander coat is vile and since clicking on it I'm getting ads for other equally bad stuff!

@NatashaDancing

You asked me what 'grannies' wear, and I responded with my observation?

Also, you didn't respond do my comment about if somebody points out clothing as 'babyish or childish,' no one makes a fuss about that, do they?

Or if I said to a guy wearing a more feminine shirt 'it's a bit girly' anything about that?

Or do you just choose to be offended about people calling clothing grannyish..

Can you not see the problem with stereotyping a whole section of the female population? The idea that there is a particular style of clothing for "grannies" is absurd.

I didn't respond to your other points because they aren't proper analogies.

I can't even imagine saying that anything worn by an adult is "babyish" or "childish"? Why on earth would I ? If the clothes come in adult sizes, they're adults' clothes. (Assuming that the wearer isn't into that revolting "adult baby " kink but that's another matter entirely and unlikely to be discussed on S&B)

As for describing a man wearing a feminine styled shirt as "a bit girly"- no I wouldn't.

SlideandPolka · 24/07/2023 18:01

I agree on the unpleasant ageism. (Which is why, as I hated the beige coat, I compared to Korean dictator leisurewear.)

M340 · 24/07/2023 18:11

It's merely an observation of what I've seen that group of females wear, and putting the coat in that category.

Brumbies · 24/07/2023 18:22

What a dreadful forum this is, a simple question about a jacket can go on to reveal some really nasty posters.

PegasusReturns · 24/07/2023 18:35

Going forward instead of “grannyish” can I suggest:

“It’s a coat that would be worn by someone who values comfort, warmth and practicality over style and/or fashion, typically this a look preferred by an older generation of women who after a lifetime of boned undergarments, pencil skirts and court shoes no longer have any fucks to give”

🤷‍♀️

Sorry, I'm not about to faff around and come out with all of that waffle because someone's offended by the word grannyish.
My grandmother calls things grannyish. No one bats an eyelid.

Only on MN😂

But there isn’t a group. Grannies come in all shapes and sizes and all ages from mid 40s upwards. You know that saying about when you find yourself in a hole …

No, because that's largely nonsense and a bit patronising.(When did anyone last wear "boned undergarments")

It's a dull coat, in a dull colour. It's not elegant or well cut. It doesn't look as if it would give the wearer joy to wear. It doesn't even look as if it would be as robustly weather proof and practical as the (better looking) Seasalt coat.

Or one could exercise a bit of imagination and humour as SlideandPolka did when she compared it to Korean dictator leisurewear.

M340 · 24/07/2023 18:57

Well, what your perception of a granny is, is different to other peoples.

Being a grandparent in your 40s and labelling something 'grannyish' aren't remotely related.

See Oxford languages below.

Love the originality of finding yourself in a hole comment too!

Since when is challenging ageism ‘dreadful’?
