How do I cover my shoulders for church wedding?

Guest at smart wedding next month.

Sold a kidney and invested in this beauty.

What cover-up would best suit it for the (very conservative, I'm warned) church part?

Maximum budget £40. Size 12.

Sandrine - Blue Leaf Jacquard

It would be fine as it is in any church I've ever been to OP, but if you're worried then a blazer would look good.

PegasusReturns · 23/07/2023 21:08

No, it really wouldn’t! A blazer would look god awful with that style of dress - as you’ve been told!!

GrinGrinGrin

You believe a shawl/pashmina/bolero/ lacy shrug whatever would look good.

I happen to think that’s great if you want to look like a provincial maiden aunt, conscious of her bingo wings.

I think an over sized ruched sleeve cream crepe blazer would look good. Much more Stevie Nicks 😜

Op your £40 will go pretty far on Vinted

There are hundreds on there in your price range...

Are you sure that you need to OP? That’s not a particularly revealing or sexy dress. At a bog standard village CoE church I really can’t see that being an issue

Given the OP has been warned that the church is very conservative I would assume not your average CofE.

I imagine it's a bit like when you visit a church in Italy or somewhere and they have signs outside saying that shorts / vest top not allowed. Or would the posters who say they would wear a bikini to a friend's wedding (🙄) also do that in another country?

Personally I think a blazer would look awful .

It's Greek Orthodox @ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea. The OP mentioned it in her updates.

That's awful. I do wonder if there's anything some posters don't think "a blazer" is the answer to.

Stevie Nicks' legendary shawls

Like this?

A Look at Stevie Nicks’s Legendary Shawls

It wouldn’t be a Stevie Nicks show without a swirling mantle to complete her on-stage ensemble.

NO! PLEASE NO

Nat6999 · 23/07/2023 23:42

Could you wear a cardigan just around your shoulders in church?

sashh · 24/07/2023 06:25

Bloody hell this kicked off yesterday.

NatashaDancing · 24/07/2023 08:31

noglow · 23/07/2023 22:47

NO! PLEASE NO

It's a horrible jacket

It's funny that the poster authoritatively recommending a blazer with rolled up sleeves because it's so Stevie Nicks' is apparently unaware that shawls were Stevie Nicks' trademark look for her whole working life.

Maybe Stevie Nicks is "a provincial maiden aunt, conscious of her bingo wings"

HaddawayAndShite · 24/07/2023 08:40

This entire thread is why fashion is utter bullshit. Whatever you wear someone is going to love it and someone is going to hate it so why stress so much about it and just wear what you want. If you wanna wear a blazer go for it, if you want to wear a cardigan do it. Just be comfortable and happy in your own style.

PegasusReturns · 24/07/2023 08:45

Oh god @NatashaDancing you can’t bare to have anyone disagree with you can you?! To the extent you take a post I had nothing to do with me (FWIW I think the posted blazer is awful!) and take it as an opportunity to criticise my opinion. Again. You’re starting to look ridiculous Grin

I am aware Stevie Nicks wore shawls 🙄 her fashion was edgy and interesting. Which is the point. In 2023 there is nothing remotely interesting about combining a pashmina or cheap lacy bolero with a satin biased cut dress.

If it’s your style knock yourself out, but despite what you seem to think you’re not the only person whose opinion counts.

You seem much the same about some one disagreeing with you. It's still funny that you so dismiss shawls citing Stevie Nicks as your authority.

I don't think the bolero, cardigans were the options here, but a shawl was.

Your ageist comment was horrible - you might want to work on that. I might have let your comment pass if it weren't for that. The casual ageism on MN is awful.

peachgreen · 24/07/2023 11:35

That cropped white jacket from Vinted is very much not the boxy, oversized, longline blazer that Team Blazer were talking about...

This thread is bonkers.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/07/2023 08:30

Exactly. Some strange replies here. Men takes hats off, for example, whether Christian or not.

That takes me back to working at a church service where DP in his innocence, was spotted with his hat on at the back. He was slightly alarmed with how I appeared from nowhere (I'd been working the sound) and mouthed 'GET THAT HAT OFF NOW' - his response was 'I'm cold (and bald)'.

His hat was removed and, apparently, the look in my eyes was pure Wrath of God.

I'm not a believer in anything except not being a dick to people on the basis of their beliefs.

A pashmina/wrap will be absolutely fine - and probably necessary in many old churches.

TrueScrumptious · 24/07/2023 11:56

Does it really matter? Cardigan, pashmina, shawl, bolero, blazer? Put it on as you enter the church, remove it as you leave, what, half an hour later? It never needs to be seen again. No-one will care. You’ll be sitting for most of the service anyway, so no one will even see, or be even looking at you then.

She’s already said (twice!) that it’s a Greek Orthodox Church wedding so are will need to keep her shoulders covered.

No, don't be ridiculous, the only possible church is a CoE village church. No other requirements could possibly exist Grin

RedheadInARush · 27/07/2023 15:39

Not wanting to fan the flames of wrap vs jacket vs pashmina war (!), but spotted this capelet as a potential compromise.

It would get a lot of future wear, so I'd be prepared to eke out my budget just a few quid more than £40. And navy suits me.

It's short enough not to detract too much from the dress itself, but should cover up the chest area enough, if I bow the ties lower down.

Otherwise, I'll see if I can hunt down a navy shawl scarf with gold thread floral/paisley type pattern to pick up on the shoes/bag colour.

Your input welcome (no fighting!). I can see the attractions of all camps, so am open minded.

This thread is wild.

I never knew pashminas and blazers inspired such strong reactions. You do well to avoid it with a capelet. Although maybe that will anger the cardigan crowd? Blimey, it's a minefield.

Just one last thing, are you sure you need to cover your shoulds op😉

I think I’d have to see it on – it could be amazing, it could be awful. A bit like this thread. 🤭
