How do I cover my shoulders for church wedding?

Guest at smart wedding next month.

Sold a kidney and invested in this beauty.

What cover-up would best suit it for the (very conservative, I'm warned) church part?

Maximum budget £40. Size 12.

Shawl 100%.

Don’t do a blazer it is definitely not the most currently in fashion thing to do as a PO advised 🤦‍♀️ yes blazers are in fashion but not with a dress like that.

I think the difference is though that you're not just "going" along for your own benefit like the oft-mentioned tourists in Spanish churches, you're being "invited" along - as a guest. Hosts should go to lengths to make their guests comfortable, or at least I did at my wedding.

If someone has already spent money, booked accommodation, bought outfits and a present, booked time off work, given up their free time and travelled, I can't imagine also expecting them to have to go along with my bizarre terror of women's shoulders. Now that would be disrespectful.

And as part of that invitation OP has accepted on the understanding that her shoulders will need to be covered for an hour or so of the day.

Where does ensuring every single guest is 100% comfortable all of the time end? If a tee-total person was invited should they expect the wedding to be dry for their own comfort? If someone hates the hot weather and was invited to a summer outdoor wedding should the couple be expected to move the date to a winter date to make them more comfortable.

If you feel so uncomfortable with the religious aspect of the service you decline. The entitlement is outrageous.

It’s nothing to do with the hosts, though.

For what it’s worth, I would never go into any church or religious building with shoulders uncovered, and I’m not religious. I’m quite shocked at some of the views on this thread.

Of course it is. The hosts choose where to have their wedding (and what beliefs to have themselves) don't they.

I too wouldn't enter somewhere dressed contrary to their rules. But I still retain the right to criticise it in a ln anonymous discussion thread. I'm not sure why people find this point so difficult.

absolutely do NOT go for a shrug/bolero/wrap or shawl

you’ve splashed out on Rixo so don’t undermine the style with a naff 90s wedding accessory.

an oversized ruched sleeved blazer would be best or if you’re really adverse to the idea a cropped chunky cardigan. Ba&sh and Maje have some lovely examples that pair well with Rixo that you could look at for inspiration

90s fashion is back in dont you know 🫶

I wore one to a wedding last year matching my outfit and got loads of compliments lol I’m mid 20s.

You said that the hosts were responsible for the guests' comfort. The bride and groom don't dictate the rules of dress in their religion. Are you saying they shouldn't get married in the church of their choice, in case a guest objects to covering their shoulders?

If not, what exactly are you saying? You're keen on rubbishing other people's posts, but your own point isn't clear. What, precisely, do you think the bride and groom in this case should do, given that their religion requires a conservative dress code?

Or is the problem that you haven't actually thought this through, so you're attacking other people to distract?

Longline blazer with the sleeves pushed up would be the most currently fashionable way.

Each to their own but personally I think both look awful and swamp the dresses underneath. They look like a 90s rom com where the heroine has got caught in the rain and borrowed the hero's jacket.

Either a blazer or a long duster coat/kimono kind of thing (which you’d take off after the church bit)
https://onehundredstars.co.uk/collections/sale/products/one-hundred-stars-kew-passion-flower-grey-duster-coat

The duster coat is an excellent suggestion.

The rolled up sleeves blazer look will be fabulous - if OP wants to look like Jim Kerr from Simple Minds late 80s.

Maireas · 22/07/2023 12:21

Oooh, are duster coats back? Brilliant.

Misspiggy1012 · 22/07/2023 12:26

Some people love to make everything a big drama I'm ages with this lady and it's difficult to stay fresh and not swear. So go with a silk wrap doll I would. Please ignore all the drama queen's of the days comments or you're going to be in tears you asked for advice not a load of bi*en but you can't say hardly anything without someone taking offence these days I know what you meant. You didn't mean any harm to religion or churches but you will get people who aren't coping at home and they write things in a mood about their own dramas at home pay no attention and enjoy your wee wedding. I hope it's not too uncomfortable for you as it can be too hot when there's a lot of people in one room. Ignore the haters 😂

The duster coats are nice but would be a waste of money here. The OP just needs something to cover her shoulders when she's in church.

The simplest option is a wrap/ shawl/ throw/ pashmina/ scarf (call it whatever you like) to wrap round her shoulders which she can ditch when she leaves the church. Bonus points if it's thin enough to roll up and stuff in a bag. OP could spend £100 getting a top of the range wrap or something cheap from say a hippy Indian cotton shop. Or charity shop.

Putting it round her shoulders will not drown the dress the way a blazer will. A blazer becomes the centre of attention.

Maireas · 22/07/2023 12:33

I agree. Pashmina not blazer. She's not going to work.

NatashaDancing · 22/07/2023 12:34

I see it's Greek Orthodox. I think it's considerate of the OP to think of this. (Another lifelong atheist here)

No such requirement exists. People choose freely what organisation to belong to. I wouldn't be part of an organisation that insisted upon women covering their faces/hair/shoulders or any other part of them that's different to what's generally accepted, and I wouldn't choose to hold my wedding in such a place either, and if I did I wouldn't get snippy about being criticised for that choice.
And for about the millionth time yes I would go along with the rules if invited ( and have done).

PegasusReturns · 22/07/2023 12:40

yes hence the oversize blazer being the most fashionable option so the OP can indeed look like she’s from “a 90s rom com where the heroine has got caught in the rain” Grin

Pashmina’s are always divisive - I think they work for travelling from car to venue if it’s very cold but really they’re not designed to be worn for any length of time.

OP do you have a fashion icon? What would she wear?

But the point is the OP has bought an expensive, fabulous dress. I'm sure she will want to show off her dress but for approximately one hour she needs to cover her shoulders.

(Personally I don't care how fashionable those blazers might be- they're still awful. They drown the dresses and take all the focus off the dresses)

I don't think blazers work with a dress like OP's either. It needs something more delicate

HamstersAreMyLife · 22/07/2023 12:59

It would be a pashmina for me. Easy, versatile, cheap and fits in a bag

Misspiggy1012 · 22/07/2023 13:00

Have you looked on Amazon because they have alsorts of cover ups and wraps long scarfs and if you prefer cardigans and all different prices go to the search type what you want and go into the sort bit at the top go into the price bit and adjust it for yourself and it will only show you the ones based on your price. When you pick something you like scroll down to the middle and it shows alternative options for you as well and you can see all the ones that look similar to what you picked. Good luck 🍀

Dressing in a certain way in a Greek Orthodox church is a requirement, just like any other dress code. Are you seriously suggesting that the bride and groom shouldn't get married in the church of their family faith, because some guests might have to wear a shawl for an hour?

You made a daft point, blaming the bride and groom for what their church expects, but you lack the intellectual maturity to admit that it was a daft point, so all you have got is telling other posters they're stupid.

Keykat · 22/07/2023 13:08

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/07/2023 07:31

To be fair, a really drapey, almost flamenco style long shawl (not a bloody pashmina) would also look good.

What is the difference between a shawl and a pashmina? Is it the fabric?

Maireas · 22/07/2023 13:10

Yes, they're very light and very fine, but surprisingly warm on a cool evening. You can easily fit them into a bag.

Misspiggy1012 · 22/07/2023 13:11

To go with gold and blue I would try a light blue with a bit of gold detail. Or just the blue you would get away with a tan colour as well. Amazon have a peek see what you can find. ☘️🍀🤞

justaweeone · 22/07/2023 13:13

What a lovely dress!
I go for something like this and just throw it over my shoulders when I went into the church. It's understated, easy to carry and won't detract from the dress.
