I wish I were either more stylish than I actually am, or could make peace with my CBeebies presenter aesthetic.

How I think I would like to dress: Black, complicated, arty dresses, simple statement jewelry, severe glasses, very short hair, expensive boots.

Me in real life: Oooh look, YELLOW shoes!! And these ones have DAISIES on them! And a cardigan with novelty buttons! And ANOTHER denim skirt because this one has RAINBOW stitching! Shall I get the cat glasses or the blue and green flowery ones? Ha! This bag looks like a hotdog!

I'm the same with house stuff. I logged on to look at cut glass crystal wine glasses (because I want to be a grown-up with grown-up things) but found myself adding the KMart 2-tone pink and yellow wine glasses to my basket...

Ok 🤷🏼‍♀️

BronnauMawrion · 21/07/2023 05:20

I hear you.
I have tried to be grown up and classy, but the "Rod, Jane, and Freddie" aesthetic always wins out.
Just embrace it. You are bringing colour and joy into your life l.

IndianSummer78 · 21/07/2023 05:24

Wear the black with one colourful thing. Or dress how you want to but buy the colourful stuff for your home. Why are you trying to be something you're not though? If you really wanted to be the other version in your fantasy then you would be, if that was really you you wouldn't want all this colourful stuff. Couldn't you have two types of clothes and dress in whichever style suits you and your activities that day? I'm sure you have lots of positive qualities, it's no good wishing you were someone else

AbsoIutelyLovely · 21/07/2023 05:26

Haha it took me a long time to train myself out of your shopping habits. I just like colour although thankfully the clown shoes and bright pink coats are now a thing of the last.

I recruited my son to tell me when I was looking daft, he’s extremely honest aka brutal and has steered me away from many disasters.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 21/07/2023 05:35

Oh black dress woman sounds dull as fuck! Daisy shoes are much more interesting! Embrace it.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/07/2023 05:40

I agree, you sound brilliant as you are. I'd want to be friends if I met you IRL. Black dress woman I'd just find both pretentious and intimidating.

NoraLuka · 21/07/2023 05:56

Placemarking just to see what advice you get.

I once went shopping for a job interview outfit and got to the till with pink jeans and a Mr Men t shirt🤦‍♀️

garlictwist · 21/07/2023 06:04

No advice but your post made me laugh. I would also love to be more stylish but am a very cold person so whatever I wear is always smothered by a down jacket.

Niftythrifter · 21/07/2023 06:08

You have one life, follow your bliss and enjoy being who you are and wearing what you want. Don’t put yourself in to a box in terms of what you wear, one day you might want to be in the black dress and less colourful the next daisy shoes whatever. The two can coexist, you are not stuck following one style. If you want a black dress try and find a more arty one in a charity shop or in the sale at Cos and then colour it up with accessories etc. or go minimalist. Either way just be you on any given day.

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 06:28

Heh. I am one of those irritating and pretentious women in navy or black with statement silver accessories and severe glasses, but why would you want to be like anyone else?

I like Cos. Others like Lucy and Yak. Both fine.

Or you could as pp said, wear the yellow daisy shoes with a navy dress.

Hugasauras · 21/07/2023 06:35

Embrace the colours! I am similar to you. I like bright colours and patterns, I have dinosaur leggings and dresses and love things in fun prints or that make me smile. I'm just not built to wear smart or classy clothes and nor do I want to anymore as they aren't me. Daisy shoes sound wonderful!

I'm sure you lovely IRL; I just meant first impressions.

I have got to almost 45 without any clear of what my style is, anyway - it tends to veer around madly depending on which bit of my personality is in charge that day - so wtf do I know anyway?!

StopStartStop · 21/07/2023 06:48

Stop with the multi-coloured daft stuff. Back to black, with simple lines. Always go for simplicity. Is it plain? Have it. Is it messy/coloured/decorated? No. Those pink and yellow glasses - can they bring peace? No. Joy? No - well, possibly, to some people. Go plain.

LMNT · 21/07/2023 06:48

Life is too short not to wear the denim skirt with rainbows.

I dress like you OP. Bright colours, jewel tones, fun prints (think cats and roller skates).

I have one black top, one black skirt and trousers, one black dress and one black blazer because you never know but I never wear them. Colours make me happy.

I also have a collection of bright tights for the winter and love clashing colours!

ShowOfHands · 21/07/2023 06:49

My dc tell me I dress like a toddler. My colleagues say I'm a bit more cbeebies.

I'm like you but the dream is Gudrun Sjoden, layered and arty fabrics, long silver hair and grace. The reality is ridiculous dungarees, clown shoes and a hat I knitted myself.

I just like colour, quirky, whimsical.

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 06:49

Its ok @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal style is v individual. There are lots of dresses recommended on here that are not to my taste, but I see them on other people who look great. I mostly have a plain dark uniform with bright accessories so I don't have to think too much.

Sounds like purgatory.

No, it's nirvana.

Littlejacksmummy · 21/07/2023 06:51

I got a dress this week with flying pigs on it. Also, I have boots with bees on them, they are my favourite. You have also made me realise I don't own a black dress. I won't be rushing out to get one either. I'd rather have pigs on my dress 🤣

ShowOfHands · 21/07/2023 06:52

Where's the line* between Utopia and Dystopia?

The line is a pair of rainbow braces btw

turkeyboots · 21/07/2023 07:06

I love those glasses! Also like the idea of a flying pig dress.
You do you.

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 07:10

I do wear colour but it tends to be plain colour. My fave dress right now is dark purple but absolutely simple with no embellishment. I can't carry off mad prints.

Stickykidney · 21/07/2023 07:14

I'm stuck in a black rut and would love to be like you and have an eye for colour. Those glasses are gorgeous

dancinfeet · 21/07/2023 07:17

be yourself! I tend to wear black jeans and some kind of t-shirt and trainers with a grey or black hoodie nearly every day, swapped for a loose floral top if I need to smarten up a bit.
Really I would love to wear long flowing boho style skirts with glitter doc martens and a brightly coloured tie dye top and maybe have a small tattoo or two, but I’m in a bit of a middle aged grey rut. wear whatever you want OP.

BettyCake · 21/07/2023 07:17

I've found my people!

I wear a uniform for work, fine by me.

In my free time it's all about colour and jumpers with daisies and I love it, it makes me happy. Embrace it!
