As the title says
What about Marc Jacobs? Radley? Ted Baker ?

@Dogsrus99 It might be that you need to buy a few issues of vogue to get clued up!! Loewe (Lo Wei Ve by the way) are Spanish. I like the gate bags but the puzzle is an icon too. Just as some Gucci bags are. Like many brands, not every bag is stellar. The Row is owned by the Olsen sisters and is American. Also American are Coach and Tory Burch. Neither are top fashion companies but Tory Burch shoes are highly recognizable with her logo.

DD2 likes Vampires Wife and Alexander McQueen. DD1 is slightly more pared back preferring luxury fabrics.

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 09:35

I love The Row but can never quite get past the fact that it’s the Olsen twins. I feel the same about Victoria Beckham, which I guess speaks to my prejudices.

Tory Burch clothes are nice and I love the branding in her stand alone stores in Europe (never been to one in US). Really beautiful use of colour and pattern.

Burberry have been magnificent in their turn around, assisted I think by a very strong Asian market, much like Margaret Howell.

one of my absolute favourite bags is my navy Burberry belt bag which gets compliments everywhere.

Pinktruffle · 19/07/2023 10:27

Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Bottega Veneta are or have all recently been available in TK Maxx.

I wouldn't put LV in the same category as Hermes, Chanel etc.@Archeron did an excellent summary of Burberry's issues and LV holds the same to me. It reminds me of the bitchy carbon-copy of each other girls at college/university and is not a brand I ever really want to but anything from - I actively avoid it.

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 10:51

I’m amazed bottega and Gucci have been available in TK maxx - presumably not handbags?!

LadyBird1973 · 19/07/2023 10:54

I think with designers there are some ranges made especially for tkmaxx and these are not the same as the 'proper' designer ones.

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 10:59

@LadyBird1973 i think that’s right but I’m amazed Gucci and Bottega do that.

I quite enjoy the Selfridges sale and it’s very rare that Gucci and Bottega are included when they do their 20% off everything.

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 11:02

I think this is fairly accurate, although you could definitely do some further stratification in each of the luxury classifications.

e.g. aforementioned Gucci and bottega definitely higher £££ than prada and LV

I've seen both Gucci and Prada in my local TK Maxx (clothes and shoes - I don't know about bags because I don't look at them). I suspect the distribution centres sort whatever they get according to demographic.

I have some lovely clothes and bags from Burberry, and also a very nice Marc Jacobs bag although it's an old one. I have no idea what other people think of any of them, because I've never asked Smile

Pinktruffle · 19/07/2023 11:15

@PegasusReturns Bottega was handbags. It appears they weren't aware, or someone had made the decision without speaking to higher ups as it was widely discussed as shocking on Instagram and then the handbags suddenly disappeared from the TK Maxx website. They were bags from the main range too so some people will have got some bargains!

Gucci both bags and wallets in store and online. My local TK Maxx has lots of Gucci wallets and leather totebags

fyn · 19/07/2023 12:50

@PegasusReturns TK Maxx have a gold label section, it’s main line but all the mad stuff that didn’t sell. They only ever seem to have a couple of each thing on the website too. I’ve seen Hermes china on there before too!

Imo high end is when the price for a handbag goes into the £1000s. If it's in the £100s it's still high street.

Whattheactualwhatnow · 19/07/2023 14:48

Marc Jacobs is not ‘high street’, definitely designer albeit maybe less lustworthy these days.
The others I’d consider higher price point high street brands, definitely not designer, and definitely not high end.

Whattheactualwhatnow · 19/07/2023 14:50

Okaydonkey · 17/07/2023 09:28

Low end High Street- Primark
High Street- Marks and Sparks
High end High Street- Ted baker etc
Entry level designer- Marc Jacobs/ Mulberry
Designer diffusion lines- See by Chloe
Designer- Gucci/ Saint Laurent/ Prada/etc
Top end designer- Hermes/ Chanel/ Louis Vuitton

Designer brands will go in and out of favour depending on their current designer etc. The top end designers are never discounted.

People afford the high end stuff by being wealthy.
Buying expensive stuff doesn’t make you any better than buying everything from Primark.

Agree with this précis!

This ! that has hit the nail on the head. I guess my real question should have been ''what brands are now considered to be chavvy''

I think MK and Burberry, for starters ?

That isn’t remotely what you asked in your OP though?
Chavvy is such a horrible derogatory term.

Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs bags have had recent popularity with a younger demographic, all of DDs piss poor Uni friends have Marc Jacob tote bags / camera bags and Kate Spade wallets, and as such mass popularity does lessen a brands designer status.

Same with the Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag, still a very high price point for a bag but once the streets of Benidorm were flooded with knock offs, it lost its prestigious’ status.

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 16:42

I’ll defend Burberry to my dying day! It’s really beautifully made classic English style.

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 16:45

I posted a pic of this on the “if you love your bags thread” earlier this year.

Nothing “chavvy” about it and even if you say you hate it, I’ll say you’re wrong Grin

Our of curiosity how much was that bag? Just want to benchmark it against Mulberry

PegasusReturns · 19/07/2023 17:09

@adviceseeker22 I can’t honestly remember, maybe £1,400?

Probably about the same price as Mulberry.

NatTheGnat · 17/07/2023 07:16

I think the ones you've listed are more high Street than designer. Especially think of Ted Baker as a high end high street shop and Radley as a label my granny used to like and she was not spendy at all.

I'd also call Mulberry lower end designer and not high street. I really don't like Mulberry bags though.

I like Coach bags and have had some good ones in the past. I am in no position to buy a designer handbag these days, so it doesn't bother me that they aren't designer.

Mulberry is sold in John Lewis - very firmly in the 'high street' camp.

I don't think because the sell them at JL it means they're high street, at least not with those priced

Mulberry is very much considered a high street brand. Most certainly not 'designer' by any stretch.

I don’t agree that Mulberry is ‘very much’ considered a high street brand! I would say it’s ‘very much’ considered a designer brand, at a lower price point.

I remember your Burberry bag picture on that thread @PegasusReturns 😀

When have typical British high streets ever had Mulberry shops on them? 🙄
Unlike Ted Baker or Radley.

Why the eye roll? Mike Ashley owns a 37% stake in the brand. Mulberry will never be viewed as anything but a vulgar high street brand because of this association.
