Acceptable dressing gowns for men

My husband wears a horrid old towelling dressing gown, with holes in it. It is fairly vile. I’d like to buy him an alternative, but now I think about it, are all men’s dressing gowns pretty awful? He wouldn’t want a kimono-style or anything fancy. Have you seen any decent options?

If you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best men’s dressing gown page with loads of toasty Mumsnetter-approved options. We hope you find it useful.

My dh has always worn white company dressing gowns. They last well, he’s on his 3rd but that spans over 20 years

Oh nothing fancy... :( I was going to suggest Daniel Hanson. I think men should go full Poirot when it comes to dressing gowns. Grin

@BringMeTea oh my goodness, they are INCREDIBLE. But £3k is slightly more than I was hoping to pay…

Thanks for the tip @StillWantingADog, these look more than acceptable. Tempted by the hooded one.

In my experience, get something as close as possible to the aged threadbare garment, but as new. Don’t go off piste. John Lewis or marks tend to have dressing gowns the same as ever.

rwalker · 16/07/2023 14:06

No need to reinvent the wheel similar to what he’s got now
I like oversized and would he want a hood on it

My husband has a lovely Missoni one that he's had for years and it looks new.

I used to watch Downton Abby hoping for a good dressing gown scene. There usually was one. Lovely they were.

The ones to avoid OP are the ones that look as though they came off the same production line as a horse blanket, you know the ones I mean, the tartan ones, with matching slippers…….

I just buy from Next, always good quality

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 16/07/2023 14:12

DP uses an awful toweling one with holes as an actual towel. How he can sit there in a wet towel for god knows how long escapes me. Fucking horrible and clammy and yuk.

I quite like the waffle ones, I think they look quite nice.

This is nice but a bit thin maybe? Can get ones lined with fleece / towel I think.

@Talipesmum that is very sage advice. I’m destined to look at navy towelling forever.

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut yes I think the waffle ones are an improvement. There’s a risk even those would be too fancy…

Haha navy towelling is the DH dressing gown of choice here too. It’s so old it’s M&S st michaels.

impressivelycunty · 16/07/2023 15:22

You know of course that he'll keep the manky old one because it will forever be The Dressing Gown of Doom whenever he is unwell.

SeatonCarew · 16/07/2023 15:24

Tom Dick& Harry do very nice men's dressing gowns (and kimonos too, come to that). After battling with my husband for years to replace his old robe, he now has one of each of these, and he loves them.

My husband has a waffle one from Morgenstern. Still looks neat after multiple washes and not as manky as towelling.
