I need a lovely coat this winter, anyone want to show me their best coat ever?

I know it’s July so may not get any responses as not exactly topical, but I need a coat this winter and am looking for ideas. I would like something a bit different from the practical puffer coat I’m replacing, maybe wool or even faux fur! If you have a coat you really love to wear do you want to share a link or a photo with me?

Love it @SpanadorFanador, especially like the colour and the contrast under the collar.

I got this a couple of years ago. I have never had so many compliments on an item of clothing. https://www.joebrowns.co.uk/best-berry-coat-wj494

These are my fave coats ever.
The sand teddy one is an old Zara one, I think I got it about 5 years ago, it still looks great and looks more expensive than it was, think I paid about £90 for it.
The long aviator one is a Topshop one I got from Asos, it goes with everything & I get so many compliments when I wear this! Love wearing it with a big scarf.

Found one of coat on eBay! It’s warm and comfy. Think mine is longer, but it’s a few years old.

im currently getting shit from dh and ds about how many coats I own and I think they are missing the point that a warm dry and stylish coat is always worth it…

I have the Finchley coat by The Fold in a couple of different colours and love it. Looks great belted or undone and with an embellished or a furry collar too.

LimeCheesecake · 14/07/2023 20:31

oh the Finchley coat is out of my price range considering I have 4 perfectly lovely wool /wool and cashmere coats currently in the porch cupboard for this winter and don’t really need a new coat- but does look lovely.

I love wool winter coats, stick them on with some decent boots and you look great and warm with minimum effort. (In the same way in hot summer weather a nice dress plus tan leather sandals and you are done. It’s autumn and spring - or rainy summer days like today - that require effort)

itsnotmeitsu · 14/07/2023 21:26

The problem with the question '... best coat ever?' is that you'd have to have owned it for a while to decide that. I have a few coats and the one I keep going back to is my Monsoon navy wool crombie-style coat with embroidered detail on one arm and part of the back. It goes with absolutely everything, so I have to drag myself away from the other coats I love. Because I've had the Monsoon one for several years I wouldn't have a clue how to find it on-line, or even if it exists anymore. But the crombie is a very classic style.

I think for a bit of an 'investment' coat, you need to think about the coat you reach for the most, and how you use it. Are you working in a downtown office and need to look smart? Running errands and dropping off kids, watching sports in the rainy winter?

I have two basic winter coats that are my go-to's. One dressier wool blend in charcoal grey/cream tweed that is the right length over dresses and not so heavy to be uncomfortable. It's not the warmest, but I don't spend hours outside with it. I prefer single breasted over double; less bulk. Reiss has some nice classic ones. I also bought a sparkly brooch for the lapel, that I keep on the coat, and have a few nice scarves.

The second is wind and water proof, hood, zip pockets and two way zip. Not puffy, but quilted lining. Mine's a navy Helly Hansen. I can wear it fall through spring, and room for a layer underneath for very cold winter days.

I think it's a bit early yet for winter coats to be in the shops, I think they start stocking them in late August.

@SpanadorFanador - that is gorgeous! The red would be fabulous on me….

I can’t find a picture of my best coat! It’s the Ted Baker wrap coat with the magnets at the neck - like this one but a bit longer and in dark green. They do the same style most years in different lengths/colours. Dark green is a great colour for most of my clothes, it’s warm and stylish coat and I’m very glad I treated myself. https://www.tedbaker.com/uk/p/Womens/Clothing/Coats-and-Jackets/ROSE-Wool-Wrap-Coat-Camel/249305-CAMEL?cmpid=ppc~google~PLA~performance_max_uk_high_price~~249305-CAMEL-5~na~na~UK&gclid=CjwKCAjw5MOlBhBTEiwAAJ8e1ms58X92jau_bs3oSbuOrDf6gPjfP155VtTVDNa6rtfnGsK_IDrbNxoCN5kQAvD_BwE

I have this in black and get so many compliments whenever I wear it. I'd love it in the royal blue they do!! They change it slightly every year (it's a staple piece), so if you have a Outlet store nearby it, you can pick up last years for about £190.

Sarvanga38 · 14/07/2023 22:39

Another vote for the Ted Baker - I have two (one blue, one magenta) in slightly different lengths. Warm and very comfortable, but always smart.

QueenofallIsee · 14/07/2023 22:43

3 years ago I bought a full length faux leopard maxi coat by Stand Studio. It is super warm, completely over the top but fabulous. At least 3 people want me to leave it to them in my will. It was about £500. Best coat ever.

On a more practical note, I have a cream mid length wool coat from Massimo Dutti that has worn very well

1stWorldProblems · 14/07/2023 22:59

Another vote for Joe Browns - I'm on my second one of these "Red Remarkable" wool asymmetric coats. I purchased the first one from them & my second (& third reserve) from Ebay. I barely get through a week without someone complimenting me on it. It's a few years old but very red, so lots of people purchased it but never wore it so it often turns up of Ebay.

We have the same taste @LimeCheesecake The cut of both those coats are lovely. I bought a Monsoon coat for £40 on sale. It was really too big for me, if I style it in a certain way, it looks like a dark green version of that beige Ted Baker one.

I still have an interest in learning a bit of tailoring but classes are very rare.

@GlitterSneakers Love aviator coats, but I would really like one that's make of natural fabric, and most of them are made of polyester or similar. I also like asymmetric ones.

Flibbertigibbettytoes · 14/07/2023 23:26

I'm so excited that apparently there are going to be more smart coats in shops this year. I'd love a really good quality, nicely lined, warm wool coat

NatashaDancing · 15/07/2023 00:08

This isn't the exact one but I have Max Mara coats in black and camel. They are fabulous. No matter what you're wearing or what a state you're in they are an instant lift.

Also a black wool and cashmere double breasted, velvet collar flared Laura Ashley riding coat from the late 1980s.

Max Mara coat

There are several others which I love but difficult to describe and so old I can't find pictures.

Ruthietuthie · 15/07/2023 01:07

Like @NatashaDancing, I also have a couple of Max Mara wool coats. The quality is amazing. I also have two The Fold wool coats and find them just as good. Both brands instantly make you look smart and elegant, in an understated way. And the quality means they look good for years.
Like @greenspaces4peace, for really cold weather, I have a Mackage coat. It's the warmest thing ever.

LimeCheesecake · 15/07/2023 09:20

Also worth saying “perfect coat” will depend on your lifestyle, the other clothes you wear, if you walk a lot or drive everywhere, and your bodyshape. I’m petite /short so many double breasted coats swamp me, and long coats need to be “neat” not too much material to avoid the “little girl in mums coat” look.

Oldraver · 15/07/2023 09:37

The Ted Baker ones are amazing though I would say on me the wrap ones are not as flattering as this one (which of course looks no where near as fab in that picture)

I always get lots of compliments. I also have a lovely embroidered Joe Browns one but no way near as good quality

I also bought the most fab red leather swing coat last year. Smart fitted coats make me feel really good

Wiennetta · 15/07/2023 09:59

I absolutely love coats and my favourite ones are:

  1. Stand Studio aviator style jacket (@QueenofallIsee your leopard coat from them sounds amazing!)
  2. Grey wool coat from Shop The Curated. Simple, classic, really wearable.
  3. Max Mara in cream. Gorgeous, feels amazing on.
  4. Vintage cashmere long robe coat in navy I found on eBay.
