I need a lovely coat this winter, anyone want to show me their best coat ever?

I know it’s July so may not get any responses as not exactly topical, but I need a coat this winter and am looking for ideas. I would like something a bit different from the practical puffer coat I’m replacing, maybe wool or even faux fur! If you have a coat you really love to wear do you want to share a link or a photo with me?

I also have one of the Ted Baker wrap ones. It’s one of my favourites. It’s my spring one.

I got this on sale years ago too. it’s my winter one. https://www.johnlewis.com/hobbs-helen-wool-blend-coat-red/p4811506
Finally, my very favourite autumn one is this in plum.

I obviously don’t stick rigidly to the seasons, but they get the most wear during those seasons. I’m hoping to replace the M&S one with a lovely green this year. The shops haven’t been doing anything just right recently. I’m a short hourglass, so it needs to be a wrap that isn’t too bulky.

@greenspaces4peace what a shame you are recommending a coat with real fur. Do you not feel sorry for the Nordic blue foxes trapped and killed for your coat? There are so many other beautiful
options as we can see here on this thread.

@ChilliPB my thoughts exactly, why would anybody want to look like a fortune teller. Weird.

But, love the Reiss coat posted a few posts upthread, and that Marlborough trench is nice, i think.

So so so many coats just aren't warm enough for WINTER though, you end up ditching them early December and just scuttling back in to your north face parka til mid February.

I would love a max mara wool coat, or even a hobbs Tilda but I'd still end up with a north face thermaball underneath, so I'd have to size up, and then the look is a bit dowdier.

Like the op though, I love coats. Always thinking about coats, even in July!

Sorry but the fortune teller comment has slightly got me! I was trying to think what the Joe Brown style reminds me of…

I don’t find I have to move on from wool coats to thicker puffer coats, but I don’t tend to be stood still outside in a coat, I often walk to work, or walking around our town, but not stood in playgrounds and my dcs sports I indoors now so no more rugby pitch side standing still in the cold!

im afraid the down puffer coat I have now reminds me of covid Christmas, drinking wine out of plastic cups 2m apart from friends /family in various parks or front garden drinks after the clap for the key workers my lovely neighbour started (all in our own front gardens, getting hammered on our own booze before anyone accuses me of being a granny killer). I’m incapable of looking at it without thinking “I really need to stock up in case we get covid again and can’t get to the shops for 10 days”.

My fave, and one I am having an awful time letting go of but I've had it about twenty years now and it definitely isn't the same as it was, is the one Limecheesecake posted, but in brown. Looks amazing with jeans! Le sigh ...

I bought this coat in December and I love it so much. Get lots of compliments wearing it. Unfortunately it's no longer in stock but they do have similar.

@LimeCheesecake @N0ëlle the fortune teller comment is spot on 😂 It’s either fortune teller or circus ringmaster.

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/07/2023 10:05

@Tangopanda hope you’re having fun perusing!

My opinion on Max Mara is that they are not worth the money. I looked at their coats in Fenwicks recently and didn’t think the quality was that great, in fact the wool felt a bit rough.

I have the MeandEm Epsome coat, in red, and I love it!

@bendmeoverbackwards yes I am! There’s a great selection on the thread.

@LimeCheesecake I have also tired of my puffer. Luckily it’s on its last legs so I would like to replace with something more stylish this year.

I love the wrap coats but I don’t think belted styles would suit my rotundness.

Also loving all the red coats, just lovely on a miserable grey day.

This is lovely and warm. Depends what you need it for mostly. Playground duty does well in this as does mother walking with a pram/buggy doing the school run. Handy that it zips up as well as down. Size up and then you can layer up underneath as well.

Not sure if you have this in the UK, but I love this Blue Label Crestbridge coat, I have one in grey (pics are not mine), it has the most beautiful fit-and-flare shape.

I also have this wrap coat in camel. Would love to have it in blue too!

That coat from the Fold is the dead spit of one of my favourite ever coats, which was from LK Bennett about 8 years ago. That tailored shape is just beautiful.

My best ever coat was tailored for my mum on Savile Row in the 70s - it's still going strong, fits amazingly and is incredibly warm, thick wool. I've been wearing it for 20 years myself and it's only just starting to show faint signs of rubbing around the cuffs. Things just aren't made that well these days.

BuffyTheCat · 18/07/2023 11:17

I love long wool coats and I’ve collected a few over the years. They’re so warm and they keep me dry. I have ankle length coats in navy, black, camel and green. They’re all very similar in style but they work well with the rest of my wardrobe. I also have a calf length grey tweed coat. I’d really like a red coat, but maybe six coats would be too many? They take up so much space!
