cocktail bar, clubbing etc.

it’s a hen do. I am in my 40s. Tired mum type. Just want to not look it! Also really don’t think I can handle heels so what the hell do I wear on my feet? Have some flatform sandals but is that too dressed down!?

I’d do cuffed mom or whatever shape jeans is trendy now, maybe embellished and add a nice top (All Saints?) or Ted Baker or a T-shirt but glam.

My local boutique sells the Markus Lupfker?) knock off sequin lips T-shirts or rock n roll T-shirts but I think they’re a bit passé. I last wore that out with a sequin blazer. And either heels or trainers.

You don’t need a £200 dress either. I’d go maybe satin maxi skirt in a nice colour with trainers or heels with maybe a plain top but statement jewellery. Oliver Bonas are doing nice satin skirts. They also had a striped one with a sheer green shirt tied over it. I personally think that on a night out or hen do can look nice. Barbie wear - not a Barbie T-shirt, you’re not 7 and you’ll only wear it once. Bubblegum pink or bright fuschia pink blazer either with black etc could really work.

Fun pants - these sound like someone my 5 year old nephew would wear!

&other stories often has nice clothes for out out, or switch to Arket or Cos if that’s more your style. 0r Jifsaw, Reiss etc.

I love the Kemi Kelford dress! Gorgeous colour, and I like the silhouette in the photo and the general concept. However it would swamp my actual body and I would be made to feel ridiculous where I live. The world is full of women who like to mock others for being different.

Surely the whole point is that taste is personal, and diversity of styles is part of the joy of it?

Many S&B beauty threads have my eyebrows vanishing into my hairline while others fawn and praise. The default look seems to be try very hard to look 'sexy' yet utterly fail by a cheap and tacky country mile. It's not for me, but it's what the majority seem to want/like/aspire to. So I hold my tongue and try to engage on those terms. Every so often I allow myself a 'perfect if you want to shag the groom on the altar mid-service' comment.

Anything else is unnecessary, and if the result of S&B threads is to dampen someone's personal style, or to homogenise what women like to wear, then we're doing all of us a disservice.

Agree that everyone should embrace their own style and be happy to do so - but also it’s a good idea to read the brief! The OP is going clubbing and to a gay bar, and is 5’1”. That dress would not meet any of those criteria for HER! There’d be about 3 feet of material trailing at her feet for starters…

Midi skirt, a really nice t-shirt - something silky perhaps and flatform sandals. Or one of your current dresses with the flatform sandals. You can dress anything up with big earrings or a statement necklace.

I can't think of one woman I know who would look good in that dress!
