What to wear on a night out- no confidence or fashion sense!

cocktail bar, clubbing etc.

it’s a hen do. I am in my 40s. Tired mum type. Just want to not look it! Also really don’t think I can handle heels so what the hell do I wear on my feet? Have some flatform sandals but is that too dressed down!?

This is a nice look and I do have a blazer but shorts are not a good look on me at all.

I'd just grab a cheap BLD and accessorise with some funky jewellery. Maybe this would suit your shape?

Gah even my correction went wrong, didn't mean to tag, was trying to capitalise!

SimonsCow · 06/07/2023 10:09

Thanks @CeeceeBloomingdale - I know you can’t go too far wrong with a LBD (I do have a couple) but it’s a bit safe - and short!!

It wouldn’t be short if you’re 5’1”, it would be knee length on me and I’m slightly taller. Safe I agree but your previous replies suggested more conservative. How would you describe you’re style?

Maddy70 · 06/07/2023 10:38

Black maxi dress, flat sandels

I'd go blazer and tailored shorts, with a cami or bodysuit.
Smart yet trendy and would go with flat forms and elongate your legs too.
You could also rewear the blazer loads

I would ask my friends what they are wearing…. Sometimes they surprise you.

I am in my 40’s as well, and recently went clubbing for the first time in ages after four children. I was told a lot of younger people wear casual clothes now, and so I just wore what I was comfortable with - a simple black top and smart tight jeans. I was happy and had a whale of a time dancing (making boxes, pretending to swim). I wore flat shoes because I can’t walk in high heals at all (torture devices!).

Whilst dancing I saw women wearing skin tight Lycra jump suites in skin colour and pink and tiny little skirts with splits. I think I might be past that! So glad I kept it simple. Being comfortable and able to dance is all I care about.

Good luck x

Bearpawk · 06/07/2023 13:02

Op if I was going clubbing/ dancing I'd wear this jumpsuit with some trainers, hoop earrings red lip and a quilted or denim jacket from Zara.
Maybe gold heels if you want to dress it up a bit.
It's super comfy, nice waist and flattering neckline. Fail safe!

Shorten the zebra print to a mini? Something comfy for dancing on your feet.

This is the sort of look I'd go for, could swap the boots for sandals and the leather for denim.

My DD and her friends all do. ' fun pants ' and a tank top. It's their equivalent of our jeans and a going out top

ilovemydogmore · 06/07/2023 14:11

Wear a black dress you feel great in, smart trainers and big earrings. Don't over think it!

Belmondo · 06/07/2023 16:05

What are "fun pants"?! Do they mean wide-leg trousers?

MotherofGorgons · 06/07/2023 17:29

Yes fun pants are wide legs or with a bright print or parachute or cargo. Basically the focus is the trousers and the top is just a basic black or white or grey crop top.Looks great with DDs abs, not so much on me.🙁

IsItThough · 06/07/2023 18:33

Doesn't have to be crop - a vest and blazer
Fun pants can have a cool shape, a kickflare, or uber wide, or some kind of pattern, or sparkle.
Jeans and a top will be back/is coming back btw but mid 40s might look like you're still wearing it from last time currently

This is nothing like a typical ‘clubbing’ dress - but you’re a grown up, and it’s exceptionally grand.

This is actually hideous I just can’t believe it’s been suggested for anything let alone clubbing!

GellerYeller · 06/07/2023 22:38

This is why MN is so entertaining. Only here could someone asking for outfit suggestions for a rare, likely one-off occasion, be told to try a £200 dress. Or a dress, for clubbing and a gay bar, that could comfortably sleep six at Glastonbury. 😂.

And whats wrong with looking like a toilet roll cover exactly?

GellerYeller · 06/07/2023 23:09

@bellac11 😂😂😂

paisley256 · 06/07/2023 23:13

@AreolaGrande love those sandals with the buckles and studs where are they from? Thanks

GellerYeller · 06/07/2023 23:14

I actually hope the dress is suggested for all future ‘what to wear to my own wedding/Wimbledon/Ascot/important interview/work Christmas do/receiving an OBE at the palace’ threads.
