cocktail bar, clubbing etc.

it’s a hen do. I am in my 40s. Tired mum type. Just want to not look it! Also really don’t think I can handle heels so what the hell do I wear on my feet? Have some flatform sandals but is that too dressed down!?

I wonder what that short dress would look like if it had leggings or very tight skinny jeans underneath, would it look too much like a dress over jeans?

KitKateKat · 05/07/2023 17:14

Why not jump on Vinted and order a few options, you'll get a bargain or two and have something Sustainable and "New for you"?

Where on earth would anyone go wearing that? Its a tent. Not suitable for a hen do

Why not? There isn't a dress code for hen do's. If someone likes a dress and feels good in it, then that's what matters. Not suggesting this specific dress for the OP, but just saying there isn't a narrow definition of what you should wear.

If you don’t like heels, wedge espadrilles would be a good compromise. They’re the only way I can achieve height as I don’t like wearing heels.

I'm late 30s.

When I go clubbing, which is quite regularly, I wear either:

Black wet look leggings with cami top and blazer, and white trainers

Black T-shirt dress (fairly short) with fishnets and black chunky boots

Pink wrap leopard print dress with boots

Skinny jeans, band T-shirt and trainers

Midi dress but fitted with side split and trainers or boots

Yes, all of that is a good look for this age group

If you know where you're going, check the social media of the club/night and see what people are wearing to get an idea of what style to go for.

This is nothing like a typical ‘clubbing’ dress - but you’re a grown up, and it’s exceptionally grand.

That's hilarious! My mum's got a dressing gown a bit like that 😂

I have jeans.. but mostly skinny (other than some very non-dressy baggy mom jeans). Isn’t skinny out now?!

Turned up mom jeans with sandals would like great if you have a funky on Trend top. I like a vintage shirt tied at the front or a cropped tee. Also works well with tucked white over size blouse.

Mom jeans and chunky converse look good too, you could wear them with a bodysuit?

The black and white dress you have would look good with DM or converse/vans or chunky sandals.

Have a look on Pinterest and think about what you have tucked away.

Ok so these are the dresses I have (not me in them sadly!). I think I’ve decided against the polka dots.

They both look fine to me for a night out.

SimonsCow · 05/07/2023 20:05

Thank you! Good to know that trainers etc are acceptable and I don’t need to be all dolled up!

The crucial info is which city, or if London which neighbourhood

What might look dowdy in Liverpool might look wildly overdressed in Manchester for eg.

What venues, if you know?

I would go for "fun pants and a vest" which is the new "jeans and a nice top" (which is deffo coming back) with a blazer . Footwear city dependent.

FruitTartlet · 05/07/2023 21:49

I’m very confused why nobody’s mentioning jumpsuits? Are they over? They are way more in a good way casual looking yet dressy, than a dress, no?

IsItThough · 05/07/2023 21:52

yy or a co-ord

FruitTartlet · 05/07/2023 21:54

Yes! Bloody love co ords! So much less complicated in the loos on a hen do than a jumpsuit. I like your style IsItThough

florenceandthemac · 05/07/2023 21:58

I'd go blazer and tailored shorts, with a cami or bodysuit.
Smart yet trendy and would go with flat forms and elongate your legs too.
You could also rewear the blazer loads

MotherofGorgons · 05/07/2023 22:03

I mentioned a jumpsuit. I am not sure I know what a co-ord is. Is it matching top and trousers?

Kathyparr · 05/07/2023 22:08

Firstly OP where are you getting all those petite dresses from???

Secondly, I'm a similar age and went to a hen do recently. I was pleasantly surprised to find trainers, jeans/leggings and blazers were everywhere. No more high heels for me.

Lacucuracha · 06/07/2023 00:16

What about this, it’s in your budget

What to wear on a night out- no confidence or fashion sense!
SimonsCow · 06/07/2023 07:13

Thank you but I would say this is about as unsuitable for clubbing as the pink tent dress

SimonsCow · 06/07/2023 07:15

Petite dresses? I have amassed quite a collection of dresses over the years (mostly pre-kids which is why hardly any are in fashion!). I don’t think many of them are from petite ranges. I tend to buy dresses that are meant to be very short on taller people but sit above the knee on me, or midis that are more like maxis on me:
