I will tentatively share with you the most outrageous pizza that I ever had – I present to you the duck poutine pizza: https://www.thestar.com/life/health-wellness/bannock-roast-duck-poutine-pizza-the-dish/article_b0b444e1-329a-5415-a9de-d38ba35838b2.html . I only managed 2 slices and it was not as disgusting as you might expect. Can I also express a fondness for Lou Malinati’s Chicago deep dish. The pizza discussion is timely as we’ve just acquired an Ooni that we’re having fun with. We’ve only had 3 runs so far and it’s definitely trial and error. I need to find a way to get more liquid out of the mozzarella, maybe straining it in the fridge overnight? I resorted to using processed mozzarella for the kids’ pizzas and it was a much more successful texture. I squeezed out the mozzarella for ours, like I did in round 2, but obviously not enough so there was still some pooling on the pizza. I haven’t deviated from a bog standard Neapolitan dough so next up is a variation that uses a poolash. Sorry I’ll stop now before we completely alienate flo

I know for a fact that some of the loot that the FT fashion team get is auctioned off for charity, which is commendable, though having seen the list I’d wager that the best bits got kept. It’s funny that, for a paper that reports on such a heavily-regulated industry, there is no problem with the clear conflict of interest in accepting high-value gifts. That said, unlike finance, it does seem like in fashion that a certain amount of freebies are baked into the package, as the wages are low. It’s a good point too about having to work with the brand’s PR shots mm47. I think they’re absolutely being pressured to use affiliate links in the online version which is what we see the same names again and again. Also good point about the fashion conglomerates. That has to have played into the muted reaction to the Balenciaga scandal.

The Times comment section is just full of people saying how obscene it is to spend $$$ on a dress and just wear what you want… a bit like mumsnet so.

Bannock roast duck poutine pizza: The dish

Roast duck poutine pizza at Bannock has sky-high calorie, salt and fat numbers.

That picture is so triggering that I may need to go and find a safe space on AIBU.

ToEllewithIt · 04/09/2023 10:34

I'm sorry - I should have included a Trigger Warning. I forgot that a photograph preview is automatically included. If you want revenge feel free to post a photo of chia seeds suspended in yogurt. I feel queasy just typing that.

botemp · 04/09/2023 10:52

You're such a pizza snowflake Flo 😂, or perhaps a parmesan flake is more appropriate? Speaking of snowflakes, my favourite pizza related video is of Neopolitans responding to pineapple on their pizza.

Elle for the mozarella, get hold of the fior di latte type if you can, then cut it into batons of about 1cm across the shorter side and you can sort of spread them out to drain in a colander. Low moisture mozarella is definitely easier and less hassle but not as tasty, a generous sprinkle of parmesan helps with those. I tend to go for buffalo mozzarella (easier to digest for me) and you just have to accept that's it's a bit wetter, thick slices work best with that.

Dough with poolish works well for smaller quantities IME (once you have a recipe you like it's easier to make large quantities and have balls ready in the freezer, you just let them slowly defrost in the fridge) but the flour you use makes a difference, there's special types for a longer ferment, especially the recipes exclusively at room temp benefit from those but overall the pizza specific ones by Caputo are easy to come by and work well. Also, fresh yeast gets far better results than dry IME.

banivani · 05/09/2023 10:58

Hahaaa that poutine pizza! Maybe the problem is that everything is called pizza. How about "warm open sandwich" ;)

Thank you for Uniqlo C recap, I look forward to the reviews. My husband and son have just discovered Uniqlo after me going on about the shop for ages (I knew they'd find the t-shirts good). Meanwhile I'm more disenchanted since their clothes are quite boring in material, fit and colour for me.

Oh I meant to tell you about this woman I often see in the morning walking to work. She's <vague hand gesture> East Asian and has a very unique style for Sweden. She lives near me, clearly walks to work, and is dressed in mid length wide/flowing skirts or dresses, the former paired with formal blouses, and always pumps with a heel. So clip clop to work, no sneakers for her and changing when she gets there. It's like a Shanghai professional woman has been transported to Sweden, I love it. So fun to see something else than our normal all-weather jackets, Rieker sneakers and jeans.

botemp · 05/09/2023 17:08

I am eagerly awaiting your report to hear what Shanghai woman wears once the snow arrives, Bani ☃️ schadenfreude welcome too 🙈

Speaking of colabs, I wasn't expecting much from this Merci X Gant one and clicked out of mere curiosity as I was randomly in a Gant shop with a friend a few months back and was kind of surprised it wasn't all nautical blah anymore (and also that they hadn't gone bankrupt Blush).

The bulk of it isn't that remarkable but there's definitely a few what I'd call styling pieces, you know the ones that look quite specific but actually tend to be so 'off' that they sort of work with anything and make an outfit at the same time, the ultimate basic that you didn't know you needed type of thing.

It's not really my style still, and the fabric composition isn't great on everything but it's a good reminder I need to keep an eye out at Gant (they had a really nice linen shirt that I didn't need when I was in the shop). The pleated skirt is the surprise one for me but I suspect the high waisted brightish blue jeans are a dark horse contender, it's a shame most pieces haven't been presented with the same effort.

OP posts:
banivani · 05/09/2023 19:02

Gant is a big brand here in Sweden, esp among men of course. And among the boat-owning sort of people. ;) I agree, worth keeping an eye out, but given the brand connotations for me (preppy people with money who vote on the right so they can keep their state subsidised cleaning help) I'm a bit allergic to the logo.

What pleated skirt, the checked mini? I scrolled right past to the elastic waist pull on pants - that's mah kind of dressing folks.

banivani · 05/09/2023 19:04

Forgot - am of course deeply curious as how Shanghai lady will take to the winter. Saw here take the rubbish out the other day - elegantly swished out to the bins, and then clip clopping off to work. Amazing. I wonder where she works, she might be a scientist at nearby university department. I can see her putting on a white lab coat over her outfit.

botemp · 05/09/2023 19:20

No, not the boring mini, the good stuff seems to be on page two, pleated skirt. There's a nice bright green coat too but overpriced, I feel.

Yes, Gant definitely has that man who owns a sailboat and votes to maintain that sailboat vibe. I think it's Swedish owned now? Their website is all over the place, they seem to market the old frumpy stuff for their established clientele while simultaneously they seem to also be trying to appeal to that sporty and rich vibe that's popular among people in their twenties (am I very WTF that Tommy Hilfiger is once again popular, yes, I most definitely am) and then they have the odd interesting bit that could really fit in easily in a gallerist type wardrobe of Old Céline and similar.

Tinfoil hat time, Shanghai woman could be a spy 🧐 I've probably been reading way too many stories but as we seem to be entering cold war II electric boogaloo edition, could also totally be true.

If you were South American Bani you would have found an excuse already a spoken to Shanghai lady.
In any case, don’t you dare disappear for months now. Stay here and tell us regularly how her wadrobe progresses through the seasons.

I saw the green coat too, but not a price I could justify for a coat.

Redandblue11 · 05/09/2023 22:17

I think the skirt has something about it, but I find it a slightly weird fitting or maybe optical illusion that I am not convinced about it.

botemp · 06/09/2023 08:06

It might very well be actually off instead of a good off, I'd really have to see it in the flesh but I can see the potential possibilities. They really could have used the stylist from the C: colab, especially considering the price point the lack of editorial pics and fair number of models shots is odd.

OP posts:
Floisme · 06/09/2023 12:01

Thanks for the link. I like that skirt in theory but I'm not keen on the actual execution if that makes sense, although I might just need to adjust to it, and I'm curious about what kind of possibilities you can see bo?

I think the green coat looks great but my eyebrows went up at the price which can hardly be down to the fabric (100 viscose). Also how long is 'long'? Midi? Top of the ankle length? Full length? I can't see any measurements or even a six-foot model to give you a sense of scale.

The cropped blazer drew me in the most (100% wool too) but I'm not keen on how it looks on the model - too big on the shoulders but not big enough anywhere else to make it look deliberate, which in all honestly, is probably how a lot of jackets and coats look on me. The lapels have almost got 1970s proportions but not quite so it looks a bit like they were aiming initially for that vibe but lost their nerve.

Voltefarce · 06/09/2023 13:16

Just popping in to say that my work wardrobe contains a number of Gant silk shirts, which I find to be very comfortable and hard wearing. I do sail, though.

I must admit to being a fan of the “preppy” look, although now that I am older and wider it feels a little frumpy for me. (I know that frumpy is a banned term on S&B. But that’s how I feel. )

botemp · 06/09/2023 13:41

Yes, there's definitely a point where preppy sort of goes from fresh and bright to dusty library, and not a charming Victorian library, it's a thin line somehow. That NPR podcast about Dark Academia that I think Shangpie linked to previously went into the history of preppy as a predecessor of DA, it was quite interesting even if it was very NPR.

Flo I'm envisioning it somewhat as a layering device as opposed to dressing around it which would probably the most common first approach but leave you a bit at sea with it. Then it has more range despite the grid like pattern so long as you somewhat nod to it in either the vertical or horizontal, playing off other clothes with patterns, colour and/or proportions. Somewhat like attached but maybe a bit more winter-y with some intentionally interesting boots (aka fugly to most) and knitwear with either texture or colour blocking.

Yeah, the cropped blazer looked interesting, but something is off about it, might be the model, I don't know. I'd probably size up on it if I were interested, which goes for a lot of their colab items. Hence my comment about it needing a stylist to show the potential in these items.

Bo a big yes to the styling in the larger photo of the stripey skirt. Exactly why you said the Uniqlo one needed styling: I was definitely underwhelmed with how they presented it but with a slouchy sweater or top, it’s really nice.

mm47 · 06/09/2023 18:30

Hurrah just discovered the edit button! 🤡

MmePoppySeedDefage · 06/09/2023 21:34

I fear that the checked jackets remind me terribly of the checked enormous square zipped bags you can buy in cheap hardware shops. Very handy when moving children to and from university.

Redandblue11 · 07/09/2023 08:10

Yes, the checked jackets reminds me of that too. But I think that is the purpose?
I like it, taking something associated with cheap, mundane and elevating it.
I have seen an African designer doing this with those bags (maybe is from her/him). Cannot remember their name … but, maybe in a chat with mm when we visited last year the V&A we mentioned it?

botemp · 07/09/2023 08:24

Yes, the fashion world loves referencing those cheap plastic bags, because they're so recognisable. Balenciaga remade them in leather iirc, in that instance it was to reference Demna (he goes without last name these days <sigh>) own story about migrating as a refugee from Georgia to Europe.

There's a fair few who also enjoy getting the super rich toting the essentials of the super poor (they're visible everywhere in third world countries). Don't underestimate how much the fashion houses enjoy poking fun at their customers.

OP posts:
banivani · 07/09/2023 09:46

See, I don't love that skirt. But I am wallpaper, not art. I do however love the skirt in that big photo Bo, the one with the woman with the big black top.

Shanghai lady (who might be Korean or Japanese, I will admit to being racist like that - I just felt her heels were a smidge too high and non-black for Japanese work style so landed on Shanghai for some reason, yet I want to make it clear they are not stilettos or even that high as heels go) has not been spotted again - clearly our routines don't gel 100% probably because I don't have any. As for her being a spy ... so far I've seen her wearing heels and taking the rubbish out, and that's not enough for ME to condemn her, I don't know about YOU Bo, but my broad brush of prejudice doesn't paint THAT broadly ... ;) Am also very curious what she'll do in winter.

Voltefarce, I love that you admit to sailing Grin. I also immediately went out and looked through the selection of silk blouses because I fancy som silk shirts anyway and they're hard to find. A lot of the patterns feel a bit brightly American though, which isn't me. It doesn't surprise me to learn that they're Swedish owned, the US east coast vaguely marine or preppy style is, as I say, popular among the moneyed lot. I haven't bought from them because I've always suspected the price to be higher than the quality but on Volte's recommendation I'm going to peek at the shirts anyway. There's a shop near wear I live so I might go by and see if I can try things on. AFAIR they usually have prints with ropes in the window though which I hate so I've never gone in ...

Also I think frumpy is an excellent word that sums up a certain feeling so well. But perhaps "staid" would be more acceptable?

Btw speaking of those checked plastic bags - if anyone knows whether it's possible to buy shares in the companies that make them, let me know. Surely there's money to be made speculating in those. Better than bitcoin.

botemp · 07/09/2023 10:13

Speculating how, Bani? Buy additional stock and then create a migrant crisis by funding a military coup Shock

Well you called her Shanghai lady so I instantly went to all these Chinese spies stories that US media seems to churn out with regularity. Wearing heels definitely makes her in sus in my book, and then taking out trash, surely getting rid of evidence, cancel me all you like.

I was the first to call the classic Gant stuff frumpy so you can all scapegoat me when the time comes but tbh I'm just done with adjusting to the latest banned word on S&B, because I'm not a thesaurus and running out of words... And as long as it's about the clothes and not people in clothes.

Ah NY pizza is a category of its own that is not to be sniffed at but should only be enjoyed in NY, especially the ones made in coal fire ovens and with a little bit too much cheese to be healthy. California pizza can get in the bin though. I do like Detroit pizza but I've only ever made it myself with some replacement of the very regional ingredients so I don't know if it even resembles it, but I like it. Chicago pizza is not technically pizza but I'm old and wise enough to know not to get in arguments with Chicagoans but it's a torta salata. I have fond childhood memories of Little Ceaser's pizza (do they still exist) it probably wasn't that good...

Btw, was click baited into this thread not about Phoebe Philo, that discusses Cristaseya and Old Stone Trade instead, the latter brand was new to me and I assume a few of you would like it.

Exactly, buying stock, waiting for all the shit to hit the fans, because I've seen that when it does everyone packs their belongings in those bags, selling the stock when the value rockets. (Please don't cancel me, I'm being dark humour-edly lighthearted.)

If I was South American I'd have already figured out her deal, as Red points out. But I'm a Swede with my earbuds firmly in at all times.

I love that link, will read!
