I’ve seen many ‘cool’ looking women wearing…

…bare nails! Is this a thing?

Usually during summer I am looking forward to choosing a nice summer mani and pedi colour so I’ve been idly looking at people whose outfits I admire when out and about and have noticed that many of them have no nail varnish on their fingers or toes. And I am also beginning to like it!

Having been lured to the white/very pale side, away from my previous reds, in the last couple of years I still could never forsee myself being tempted by NO nail varnish at all. Yet here I am, growing out my last gel pedi so much it’s now practically a French and quite excited about leaving them bare for the first time in years.

Anyone else noticed this and tempted to go bare for the summer pedi?

Meh.
Nail varnish, no nail varnish.
Lipstick, no lipstick.
Heels, flats.
In, out, bla bla

What goes around comes around. When you've seen the same fashion trends come and go at least twice it's hard to buy into this amazing revelation to be doing something different. There's nothing new under the sun.

The minute you start into what's 'cool' and what isn't you're firmly on the fashion gravy train. Even if it's the ''Not wearing any this that or the other look''.

It's still a curated look. The 'new' healthy 'looking' look, looking 'clean' (!?) isn't the same as not being arsed with your nails and not giving a damn. It will mean using clear glosses, buffers, cuticle cream, files and doing it right. And then when that's out it will all be 'The New Colour Revolution'!

There's nothing wrong with trends or enjoying following them. But it's so tiresome the way some women think it makes them slightly superior and edgy to be quick to jump on trends which are dreamed up by people being paid a lot to get the hamsters all excited about the new wheel.

Which is the Hard to Resist Polish that gives the subtle glow, please? I’ve had a look on line and there seems to be several to choose from.

I spend zero money on my manicure.
I have dozens of varnishes and I do it at home. So no, COL has had no impact on my nails.
I did spend almost a year without painting my toes, out of lazyness (though I did them this week!), but always have my nails painted, as otherwise they break too easily.

@ASGIRC

well, that's great for you.

let's just ignore the countless posters saying they no longer get their nails done because it's a luxury they can't afford.

yes, they could do it themselves, but many won't, because it's a treat/luxury to go and get them done, it's not the same doung it yourself.

it's definitely not the same letting the kids do them.

I do have one friend whose ever living DH has always done hers, he's finally got pretty good at it. (Took long enough 😂😂)

ZaZathecat · 27/06/2023 20:20

I hope it is a 'thing', I'll finally be cool!

YearsofYears · 27/06/2023 20:38

I've noticed that in London too. I think it looks fine but feel more confident with painted toe nails and I enjoy the splash of colour. I mix it up with my finger nails between bright and bold and natural. My nails aren't very strong so bold paint makes them look better for occasions.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/06/2023 20:43

I do my toenails in the summer but never my fingernails these days. Not sure that makes me cool. Just can't be arsed and they chip too quickly.

Pigtailsandall · 27/06/2023 21:23

I get my toenails done because it lasts a long time and looks nice; I have fairly nice feet but not nice legs so I want to draw attention down 😁

I haven't done my nails in ages, but as I've finally managed to grow them long and healthy, I'm thinking of doing just a top coat for a bit of shine

I don't actually know any women who wear nail varnish. I really don't think it's a "cool" fashion statement not to wear it. It just never occurs to many women. On the very rare occasions I have worn it, it starts chipping off within a day. I just can't be bothered. To be honest I'd feel a little bit silly wearing it now.

Same here

I really live on a different planet from a lot of people but I’ll take a compliment whatever form it takes

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/06/2023 02:22

I think it's minging to go about without even an inexpensive clear coat. Gnarly yellowing nails are grim. But no need to incur the high upkeep of coloured varnish.

Erm ok. So yucky nails with a clear coat are ok?
You get that’s why women have coloured nails…to make the better than looked before.
Do what you want young people. You’ll have crap nails too in 20 years.x

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/06/2023 03:03

No. Clean, scrubbed, buffed nails with a clear coat.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 28/06/2023 03:20

I live in the southern US where bare toenails are very rare. For one thing, we can wear sandals nearly all year. So I definitely paint my toenails and have pedicures. But I let my finger nails go natural during Covid and haven't gone back. I file them and put on a clear coat for a bit of sheen and strengthening. A lot of women are still painting their finger nails, but I see more subtle colors, like taupe and pale pink.

Justfeckoffwiththeovulating · 28/06/2023 05:44

I heard no nail varnish with bitten short nails and cat scratches all over the hands are even cooler....

EvenmoreDetermined · 28/06/2023 06:30

Yes, I'm noticing it too, I used to see a lot more coloured nails than I do now. I've never had gels regularly, just once or twice a year for Christmas and holidays and hands only but have a big collection of polishes myself and always had toes painted in summer and fingers through the winter (I garden a lot so not much point in summer as it gets trashed). I love looking at other peoples nails and there are definitely not so many having bright gels on a regular basis.

I've also gone for the Essie Hard to Resist on fingers this summer and I do maintain my cuticles regularly, it is a lovely clean look and a bit more groomed than just bare. I haven't done my toes at all this summer yet and am undecided whether to or not ATM.

Commit suicide’ is a very out dated term that lots of people who have been bereaved by suicide find upsetting and/or offensive

I came on here hopping to find alteratives to Sally Hansons gel repair (because it is great for the first half of the bottle, then becomes too gloppy - no adding nail remover doesn't work).

Then find out that grammar has changed in regard to taking one's own life.

Does Style and Beauty need a "light-hearted" disclaimer?! How many arguments about nail polish?

HopefulOrange · 28/06/2023 08:09

Crikey. This thread has taken a serious turN.
It’s really not that deep. It’s nail varnish.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/06/2023 08:48

It's so obnoxious when a thread is hijacked.

I think that’s what pp was trying to suggest..?

Thank you.

Suicide isn't really light hearted

You may have gnarly yellowing nails. Maybe give the nail polish a break? Mine are really quite nice and rarely use nail polish. HTH.

Hoolahoophop · 28/06/2023 10:16

I'm so not cool. I have bright orange gel nails today. Painted them myself last night. I have LOVED paining my own nails in every color imaginable since I was a teen, I also like to do nail art myself. It relaxes me to do it. It makes me happy to see it.

TheSeaDoesntKnowMyName · 28/06/2023 10:18

I like bright on my toes but dont like the feel of polish on my fingers
