I’ve seen many ‘cool’ looking women wearing…

…bare nails! Is this a thing?

Usually during summer I am looking forward to choosing a nice summer mani and pedi colour so I’ve been idly looking at people whose outfits I admire when out and about and have noticed that many of them have no nail varnish on their fingers or toes. And I am also beginning to like it!

Having been lured to the white/very pale side, away from my previous reds, in the last couple of years I still could never forsee myself being tempted by NO nail varnish at all. Yet here I am, growing out my last gel pedi so much it’s now practically a French and quite excited about leaving them bare for the first time in years.

Anyone else noticed this and tempted to go bare for the summer pedi?

I’m love Dior Nail Glow lately!

Barry M Mani Hero is also a good dupe for a transparent healthy pinky nail.

It's lack of money

It's lack of interest for me. I last wore nail varnish at around age 15. I rarely wear open toed sandals and I'm not bothered about painting my toes.

OldTinHat · 26/06/2023 23:42

No nail varnish of any type here, never has been!

@Freetodowhatiwant

seriously? You don't think that in a COL crisis this might be something that people just don't have the money for??

Oh give over, you can buy a bottle of polish for less than 2 quid, and most people have several they’ve had for years

Malarandras · 26/06/2023 23:46

You seem to be amazed that some women are not painting their nails? I rarely paint any of my nails, and I wear open toe sandals plenty in the summer. Partly because I am terrible at painting nails, partly because I just don’t see the point in painting my nails constantly. Didn’t realise this was at all a big deal actually. I barely notice of other women paint their nails either. Life is too short for all that.

SoWhatEh · 26/06/2023 23:55

I love clear nails or pale pinkish or whitish tint. I did mine clear tonight for a drinks party. But can't resist some colour on the toenails.

Rightnowstraightaway · 26/06/2023 23:57

I never bother with polish but am not very cool!

blueshoes · 27/06/2023 00:00

Erm, shellac, acrylics and painted nails have always looked chavvy to me.

Growlybear83 · 27/06/2023 00:09

I've never worn nail varnish on my fingernails or had a manicure. I keep my nails nicely shaped and a practical length. I do sometimes paint my toenails as I think most peoples toes look better with nail varnish on.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 27/06/2023 00:20

I haven’t worn nail varnish for 3 years as ttc! I’m clearly on trend…

uglybettty · 27/06/2023 00:41

I love a milky 'clean girl' gel on my fingers at the moment. I think the very minimal, simple 'natural' aesthetic is very in at the moment.

I will never not have my toes painted red though. I prefer a fiery orangey red at this time of year.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 27/06/2023 00:45

I sometimes paint my nails, but I try to minimise it - I'm concerned about the effects of painting chemicals onto part of my body.

If you are really lazy like me, eventually you will be stylish!😆

Why isn't the a like button!!

foxlover47 · 27/06/2023 01:26

I discovered Dior nail glow through a post on here and I love it. I work with animals so can't manage the long nails ( I know lots do ) I like mine shirt but the dior glow has finally made my hands look at least slightly groomed now ! I do like a hot pink or a stronger toe nail colour

Seddon · 27/06/2023 01:29

Regardless of trends coming and going I've always spent my beauty and grooming budget on improving the things I'm unhappy with. My fingernails are nice so I can leave them alone, my toenails are ugly discoloured things so they get a paint job if they're going to be exposed.

Part of it's laziness and being a cheapskate. Another part of it is wanting to show the world that I do actually look OK in my natural state and not everything requires enhancement!

WandaWonder · 27/06/2023 01:43

Are you selling something?

Don't wear it

littlemissalwaystired · 27/06/2023 01:52

I have a job that means I can't wear anything whatsoever on my fingernails. I wish I was someone who had them done regularly but alas I am not.

Youdoyoubabe · 27/06/2023 01:56

I don't mind painted nails. I think fake clackity acrylics look ugly and unhygenic.

I prefer bare nails buffed or light natural pink.

I am extremely cool.

honeycookies · 27/06/2023 01:57

I’m in my 20s and most people I know get their nails done - BIAB is a huge trend. Others do theirs at home. I went bare for like a year and I was pretty much the only one!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 27/06/2023 02:04

I've noticed it too, OP.

I seldom wear other than clear varnish (or Essie Hard to Resist) on my hands; I do so much gardening and DIY that manicures never last.

Always keep my feet nice and prided myself on pedicures/varnish all year round - darker colours in winter, pinks and hot pinks in summer. But suddenly have lost interest. I keep my feet soft and well-tended, and have buffed the nails so they aren't gnarly, and apply the Essie Hard to Resist, and that's it. I think it gives my "mature" feet a youthful look.

And it's SO much less work.

HappiDaze · 27/06/2023 02:16

To be fair I haven't worn nail varnish on my toes for a year but I couldn't go out in my sandals etc without painting my toe nails

As for my finger nails I just buff them to a shine I never wear nail varnish

MysteryBelle · 27/06/2023 02:41

I’m finally on trend.

RachelNoire · 27/06/2023 03:48

Are you sure it’s not the “lipgloss nail” TikTok trend that you’re seeing everywhere? unless you’re inspecting people’s nails really close up?

like others I cannot stand the gel nail mani/pedi look, it looks unhygienic and I hate seeing them growing out too.

veryfluffyfluff · 27/06/2023 05:43

There's been a move in make up towards "clean" bare skin looks for a while now so I imagine nails fits with that.

ThursdayFreedom · 27/06/2023 06:48

Coldcoldheartdualipa · 26/06/2023 23:08

Jeez 🙄

@Coldcoldheartdualipa

well that was worth @ me wasn't it 🙄🙄🙄

the OP ASKED if bare nail were a 'thing' I replied & don't need your approval.

Jog On - is a bit dated, but Fuck Off apparently upsets snow flakes....
