…bare nails! Is this a thing?

Usually during summer I am looking forward to choosing a nice summer mani and pedi colour so I’ve been idly looking at people whose outfits I admire when out and about and have noticed that many of them have no nail varnish on their fingers or toes. And I am also beginning to like it!

Having been lured to the white/very pale side, away from my previous reds, in the last couple of years I still could never forsee myself being tempted by NO nail varnish at all. Yet here I am, growing out my last gel pedi so much it’s now practically a French and quite excited about leaving them bare for the first time in years.

Anyone else noticed this and tempted to go bare for the summer pedi?

I do both toe and fingernails, currently bright pink, they cheer me up when they are bright colours.

I garden quite a bit and the coloured varnish does hide my nails if they get a bit stained.

I do like natural shine nails though and always give coloured varnish a rest every few days and just have a soft sheen on them.

mondaytosunday · 27/06/2023 09:00

Never get fingernails done as don't seem to last a minute, plus my nails are very small compared to my hands so looks odd.
But I love getting a pedi and the colour puts a smile on my face, even if most of the time I'm the only one who see them!

TheOGCCL · 27/06/2023 09:02

I think it’s an extension of that clean/glass beauty thing. Thick make up also looks a bit passé now. I think long, bright nails look jarring and yes uncool. I still like a natural pink.

I work with someone twenty years younger than me who wears both thick make up and long bright nails so either being young doesn’t make you cool or my impression of trends is off, she confuses the hell out of me.

Netcam · 27/06/2023 09:02

I don't know if I've ever been cool, probably don't care, I'm me. But I've got through life fine all the way to 53 without ever doing anything to my nails other than trimming them. Think I experimented with a bit of nail varnish as a teenager but that's it. Remember having my nails done once for my first wedding, didn't have any impact on the disastrous marriage. Second wedding to lovely DH didn't do anything to my nails at all, still felt like a princess and married the love of my life.

I go from one extreme to the other. I have to have bare nails for work but if I go to an event then they are bright red.

I think that I would be too lazy to do it all of the time.

Phos · 27/06/2023 09:06

Bare nails/French looks nice on fingers as long as they're well kept, but I increasingly think bare toenails look awful.

Theunamedcat · 27/06/2023 09:07

Honestly I'm pleased for this trend I've always thought toenail polish could be hiding....anything 😂

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 27/06/2023 09:14

I haven't had any colour or glossy looks on my nails for about a year. It suddenly seems dated. Bare or pale is all I do now. More natural makeup too. No heels.

Erm, shellac, acrylics and painted nails have always looked chavvy to me.

I don't think these gel nails look chavvy

Yeah that's the point of it though

Maglin · 27/06/2023 09:16

I paint my toes but not my fingers.

I have never wore nail polish on my fingernails and only wear the pinkish fungal nail breathable nail polish on my toes to hide slight fungal nail in the summer. When I used to use proper nail polish on my toes it made my fungal nail worse.

Does fungal nail never go away then?

HopefulOrange · 27/06/2023 09:21

I’m all for nail varnish on the toes. I just think most feet are gross and look better with abit of colour on them!

queenMab99 · 27/06/2023 09:24

I have 'gardening hands' broken nails with a nice black edging on some of them. Is that fashionable?

Marchitectmummy · 27/06/2023 09:25

100% not cool to be painted this summer, neat short shaped clean nails is the way forward... leave the men with the nail varnish for now.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/06/2023 09:28

It's just that when having obviously "done" nails becomes universal among lower SES groups, the pendulum swings back the other way for those who want to distance themselves from anything low end (see also: fake tan, microblading, hair extensions, eyelash extensions).

Not really, mine is mainly mild whitish patches but I did have two brownish patches on my nails for a while and it is often caused by wearing nail polish for long periods so it's a vicious circle of nail polish to hide it but causing it at the same time. If it is really bad you can get tablets but these can have side effects for your liver, if it does eventually go away it seems to come back quite easily.

@Coldcoldheartdualipa

well that was worth @ me wasn't it 🙄🙄🙄

the OP ASKED if bare nail were a 'thing' I replied & don't need your approval.

Jog On - is a bit dated, but Fuck Off apparently upsets snow flakes....

Man you sound chippy

@Freetodowhatiwant

seriously? You don't think that in a COL crisis this might be something that people just don't have the money for??

I spend zero money on my manicure.
I have dozens of varnishes and I do it at home. So no, COL has had no impact on my nails.
I did spend almost a year without painting my toes, out of lazyness (though I did them this week!), but always have my nails painted, as otherwise they break too easily.

MammaTo · 27/06/2023 09:36

I’ve seen this bare nails trend on tik tok as well.

The girl picked up how on sex and the city, Carrie B never has her nails painted. But he’s it does look like it’s going to be another trend.

Blueberry40 · 27/06/2023 09:37

As someone who developed a horrible allergy to gel nails a few months ago this thread has made me so happy 😁 thanks op

TheMurderousGoose · 27/06/2023 09:39

Nail bars near me seem to be as busy as ever. And a lot of people with their perfectly ‘bare’ nails will be paying to have them look so perfectly bare.

justasking111 · 27/06/2023 09:40

I think growing out shellac nails looks awful.

Sausagedogmum · 27/06/2023 09:41

Oh how I would love to have bare nails, but my nails are horrendous, they bend once they get to a certain length (and that isn’t very long), they break and peel, and now I’m a bit older, my hands a more wrinkly so I started to get acrylics, my hands look so much better.

Dreamstate · 27/06/2023 09:43

I cannot be bothered with the faff, I used to get my nails done but by time I get home one nail will always have chipped paint. It never lasted long, so I just go and get my nails shaped (no polish).

I think my toes look better painted but haven't bothered to be honest.
