I’ve seen many ‘cool’ looking women wearing…

…bare nails! Is this a thing?

Usually during summer I am looking forward to choosing a nice summer mani and pedi colour so I’ve been idly looking at people whose outfits I admire when out and about and have noticed that many of them have no nail varnish on their fingers or toes. And I am also beginning to like it!

Having been lured to the white/very pale side, away from my previous reds, in the last couple of years I still could never forsee myself being tempted by NO nail varnish at all. Yet here I am, growing out my last gel pedi so much it’s now practically a French and quite excited about leaving them bare for the first time in years.

Anyone else noticed this and tempted to go bare for the summer pedi?

Oh how I would love to have bare nails, but my nails are horrendous, they bend once they get to a certain length (and that isn’t very long), they break and peel, and now I’m a bit older, my hands a more wrinkly so I started to get acrylics, my hands look so much better.

You should see your GP about your curving nails. Seriously.

MissDollyMix · 27/06/2023 09:52

Always interesting to hear about new trends. I’ve been painting my nails since I can remember and will continue to do so, give zero fucks if it’s in fashion or not. Given the long waiting list for appointments with my local (excellent) nail tech I’m clearly not the only one. My grandmother had the most beautiful nails, always painted. She was a very classy lady. We used to go in and paint her nails for her even when she was very poorly in her nursing home. I think neat nails (painted or otherwise) are timeless. When my nails are not painted they look scruffy and horrible, a beautiful natural look a la SJP is not effortless.

I am not sure it is a cost of living thing, as it probably costs just about the same to have the bare/barely there look done at a salon.

It's a bit like the barely there make up trend. The make up there, just applied to not look like it.

I am very happy to find out this is now a trend though. As it may minimize those TikTok videos of an influencer of some product, and they tap the box with their long overly done nails. I am sure I have misophonia as I cannot abide the sound of someone tapping their nails on anything.

SpeckledlyHen · 27/06/2023 10:00

I had my nails done for years. Not the long extensions but a shorter squarer shape with a fairly nude colour. I also did my toenails in a brighter red/orange. Had them done every two weeks for maybe 8 years or so. They always stayed in good condition and I every now and again had a few months break.

I recently moved and went to a new salon, lets just say whatever they did they absolutely ruined my nails. I went about 5 times before realising how bad they were getting. They broke off, were flaky, and in a right state. It took ages to get them back to normal using Essie Hard to Resist and Apricot Oil.

I will never have them manicured again at a salon. I now just put on the hard to resist for a pinky glow and keep them neat and shortish. They look so much better than before and naturally I just feel that "done" nails are no longer in fashion, not sure why!

Daisrose · 27/06/2023 10:08

Currently rocking bare nails thanks to them being completely destroyed. I actually rather like them bare now and am loathed for anyone to touch them. I’m still getting a clear gloss manicure. Toenails will always be painted!

shropshirewitch · 27/06/2023 10:41

the "lip gloss" nails are massive atm

I sometimes paint my nails, but I try to minimise it - I'm concerned about the effects of painting chemicals onto part of my body.

A dead part of your body?

I stopped my gel nail habit during lockdown and have never resumed it but I’ll go into the cremator with painted toenails.

I've used nail varnish on and off from the age of about 12, my natural nails are in beautiful condition (about the only bit of me that is!), I have long slim nail beds, they never flake or snap and they're a healthy pinkish colour. My mother and grandmother before her also had very strong, elegant nails with or without nail polish (which is remarkable when you consider they both worked as cleaners). I think your genetic make up plays a far greater part in nail condition than 'toxins' from nail polish.

What is concerning though is the rise in skin allergies caused by gel polish and people curing them at home with dodgy UV lamps or at slap dash, cheapo nail bars.

I definitely agree on genetics. I live a very healthy lifestyle and almost never use nail varnish. My nails snap easily and I have short nail beds. They will never be beautiful. The only time I managed to grow them long was when I was pregnant!

When my Mum died I asked the Funeral Director to do her nails, which she did.
She always had painted nails and as she got older I used to do them for her but she died very quickly and unexpectedly so I hadn’t done them for a while.
I couldn’t bear the thought of her with chipped nails
Probably a bit daft

Blossomtoes · 27/06/2023 10:59

I think that’s beautiful and very loving @Hoppinggreen. I sprayed everything my mum wore for her final journey with her favourite White Linen so if you’re daft, I am too.

I hope someone will do that for me when I'm older ❤️
I love painting my nails - they're currently green (Essie "Un-guilty pleasures"). I'm a reformed nail biter so if they're bare it's too tempting to chew! Quite glad to be uncool 😂

BeginningToLookALotLike · 27/06/2023 11:42

I only use a clear Sally Hansen growth product on my nails now. If I'm watching TV in the evenings I like to push back my cuticles and shape my nails.

I also have a Japanese nail buffer, which seems to work well, and a nice cuticle oil and hand cream.

This was all partly driven by allergies but I also take pride in having natural looking nails.

My toenails are always painted though.

I'm finding all things to do with gardening is becoming increasingly fashionable so bare nails are more conducive to this activity. Whilst you can have a manicured nails and garden it is pretty high maintenance.

ohmeoh · 27/06/2023 12:48

So I wear nothing on my fingernails or toenails unless a really special occasion. Last time I chose quite a dark polish which unfortunately stained my toenails for a while. Probably should've used a base coat but it has been years since I painted my toenails and don't remember being previously concerned with this. I concentrate more on nail and skin health with nail oil and targeted moisturisers. I have found a pair of the elusive closed toe summer sandals and very pleased I am with them too.🙂

Meltingpots · 27/06/2023 12:48

If there was every a place I don't belong it is on this thred 😂

I've never felt more lonely.

I think more women are becoming aware of the impact of nails on the environment and health, veganism first turned me to the dark side of nail varnish and then hearing all the creepy foot fetishist wank over white or black toenails just made me not want to paint my nails even more.

When I think of painted nails I think of older women and camgirls or women do it for the menz. I know you'll quote me and say bUt i dO iT fOr mYsElF... we often think a lot of things are for us but when we dig deeper it's not without context or pressure from society as we don't live in a bubble where we form opinions entirely of our own, we've all been influenced by something or someone, the problem is are we influenced by the right people or following like sheep? I get it, it's easier to do what's safe and usual and go along with it.

I know. We should all commit suicide as soon as the first flush of youth is over. Then we won’t upset the new generation of feminists who forget we got there decades before they were born. 🙄

I am old and have never painted my nails except for my wedding. And not because of the environment either. It's because I don't like the look and don't want to. Also, it's not usual in my community.

It's not "commit"

Gizzey · 27/06/2023 13:14

Commuting daily in London and I’d say 90% of women wearing sandals have painted toenails - all ages and levels of ‘cool’. With painted fingers it’s about 50/50.
