Navy & Black

What are your thoughts on navy and black together? A big style faux pas or completely normal.

I've always felt like it was to be avoided, but I'm struggling as my favourite work trousers are navy and I've stupidly bought lots of black tops...

I love navy and black together - very French

With the right navy it can look great.

I do too. I was brought up not to put them together and it’s a “rule” I’m happy to break.

I can’t do this because black doesn’t suit me but you might be ok. I also think it depends on texture and size of the top - it looks good when the top is thin or small or both. So black cotton long sleeve shirt won’t look good but black silk short sleeve blouse or black vest might be.
Hope my theory makes sense.

I like it. I have light navy cropped work trousers and wear with short sleeve black top then funky coloured shoes.

Maybe I'm being unimaginative but I just can't imagine them looking nice together. They can look tolerable.

No. The only time i do this is accidentally, when i get opaques out of my tights drawer without putting the 'big' light on in winter 😂

But i'm old and set in my ways.

I still have an inner voice about mixing gold and silver jewellery as well 🙄

The right navy, looks great.
The wrong navy looks dreadful. Needs to be something quite timeless and elegant to work too

With a lighter navy (verging on royal blue) it would be ok, or dark denim and black, otherwise it's not something I would put together. Can you find a grey version of your favourite trousers?

Hard for it to look like like something you meant to do, rather than just 'my eyes weren't properly open'. I think you can just about get away with it, especially with something that is more blue than midnight but not much more than that.

Such a fuddy duddy rule. I think navy and black look good together. Maybe wear a navy accessory too, if you’re worried about people not realising it’s intentional.

Yes, good, but don't add any other 'colours' to the outfit, only neutrals.

There is a photograph of Diana taking her boys to school, wearing black and blue,
jacket open. I cannot find it to post a link, anyway, even on Diana it doesn’t look right, its a bruised look, black and blue, in blocks. Stripes or a jumbled pattern
in these two colours would look fine though.

Royal Blue is a harsh and difficult colour to wear, suiting blonde ladies better, as here.

I like navy and black together! I have a navy and black jacket from LK Bennet which is one of my faves, looks great with black trousers.
