Navy & Black

What are your thoughts on navy and black together? A big style faux pas or completely normal.

I've always felt like it was to be avoided, but I'm struggling as my favourite work trousers are navy and I've stupidly bought lots of black tops...

Royal blue isn’t the same as navy.

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/06/2023 13:01

I love both colours...but not together!

tacomaco · 27/06/2023 13:03

I think it looks horrendous.

Givenupgivingashit · 27/06/2023 21:27

The NHS must have it all wrong then....I have to wear a navy blue nurse dress with black tights!

I love navy and black together - very French

How funny, I came to say that pretty much my entire work wardrobe is navy and black. And I am.. French! I didn't know I was a French stereotype😀

To be fair, I'm not sure many people are looking to NHS uniforms for style inspiration. But yes, I'd call my union about that sort of workplace bullying... (Not serious.)

@pippistrelle 😂
Quite! a tight short sleeved summery school uniform type of navy dress with black tights and crocs or other comfort shoes are hardly the height of fashion.

Rosalindaaaa · 28/06/2023 11:27

The people that praise French style I wonder if they actually lived in France. They're not all stylish at all, just like any country. As a nation I'd say Italians are more stylish.

pippistrelle · 28/06/2023 12:36

When people say 'very French', they usually mean a particular interpretation of chic and Parisian. They don't mean, for instance, the part of France where I lived, where people and clothes are, first and foremost, practical and built for the weather: sturdy, robust, not necessarily stylish.

Navy and black do work together. I find it a bit dense for summer and if you have a black item that’s faded or is a blue black, and a navy item that is more cool you need to avoid looking like you think they’re the same colour, but navy is way nicer than the licorice allsort look, as shown in the Diana pic upthread. Black sucks the life out of brighter colours making both colours look cheaper than they are regardless of how expensive they were. Maybe I’m just damaged by my 80s childhood.

Giselletheunicorn · 28/06/2023 20:07

Hate it!

Also hate brown and black - which was a 'thing' around my parts about 5 years ago. Disgusting.

Urgh, hate crocs. Clarks shoes all the way 😀
But yeah, black opaque tights and creased dress, tres trendy!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/06/2023 22:55

With the right navy it looks good and the wrong it can look bad. In my first two office jobs I had navy skirts and could only find black tights but wore navy court shoes.

PinkLazyApple · 28/06/2023 23:16

It totally depends.

It needs to look intentional and to do so the entire outfit must be polished, nice material etc in order to work.

Victoria Beckham pulls it off well.

If you've a bobbly top, it's I'll fitting etc, you're going to look like you got dressed it the dark.

I like navy jeans with a black t shirt.

Pigtailsandall · 29/06/2023 15:55

I'm wearing black and navy today! I love it! Tbh if I couldn't wear black with it I'm not sure what I'd wear.
