How often do you buy yourself something?

I’m talking about something you don’t actually need.

Maybe clothing, jewellery, toiletries that aren’t really necessary, make-up, perfume etc etc.

I find myself online shopping waaaay too
often, and above are some of the types of things I buy myself. Tbh I feel awful about how much I’ve wasted and spent.

I should add here - I’m trying to determine what is normal when it comes to these sorts of treats.

Yeah, I'm the same. I don't get into debt, and we don't struggle, but I spend what I could be saving.

Need to learn to do without that little buzz of pressing 'order' and waiting for the parcel.

BigMacExtraPickles · 23/06/2023 23:20

Several times a month 🫣

sunshineandstormclouds · 24/06/2023 00:54

Too often.

mrsneate · 24/06/2023 01:04

Few times around pay day.

This week I've bought a new calculator for work
New pens for work
New bedding
And a new summer dress

Usernamen · 24/06/2023 04:21

As above, several times a month.

There’s always something I want - I have a running list!

Next purchase will be a pair of Russell & Bromley flats. Then I’m going to check out the COS sale. 👀

My husband told me off for spending too much on myself. The last thing I bought was a toast dress. I'd seen it online and I couldn't stop thinking about it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/06/2023 08:46

Seldom these days. This week I was standing in Morrisons for five minutes seriously debating whether I really NEED a pair of green culottes, and then I remembered the days when I bought myself nice things all the time, and not just in supermarkets, and bought them.

SophiaElise · 24/06/2023 09:04

Too often! Some weeks I've bought stuff every day. Online shopping makes it so easy. Came to a head recently when I bought the same dress a year apart, forgetting I'd already bought it (but never worn)

Are you me?? 😂😂😂😂

fireflyloo · 24/06/2023 09:19

A few times a week. Latest purchase the the VB counter stick. I hope it's better than the other 10 brands I've got!

snoozingbaby1476 · 24/06/2023 11:16

Too much. I need to stop although I'm very pleased with a gorgeous necklace that I received this week.
I'm trying to shop my wardrobe a bit more. I've got so many lovely clothes I don't get to wear

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 24/06/2023 11:19

At least once a month. Trying to NOT though, as I have enough clothes, definitely enough cosmetics and skincare, and really don't need anymore jewellery.

The worst thing about me is that I'm really disorganised and messy - so I'll put an earring down and promptly lose it.

Do you mean he told you off in a light-hearted way?

I can’t imagine being told off, as an adult, for spending money on myself! Maybe that’s why we never have (and never will have) joint finances 😅

Emotionalstorm · 24/06/2023 18:21

Every other day. I buy clothes from mid range brands like Sezane, Lululemon etc. I also get facials, skincare products I don't need. I also like buying new furniture. I never go into debt for it and I make sure that I save loads every month.

Your husband is not a very nice man. My husband would buy me the dress if he knew I really wanted it. Do you really want to be in a relationship with someone like that?

Chesneyhawkes1 · 24/06/2023 18:23

All the time. I wish I could stop.

This week I've bought new sunglasses, 2 pairs of running shoes and 2 pairs of running shorts.

Ambi · 24/06/2023 18:29

I don't buy things often, I have plenty of perfume and makeup. I like and use the jewellery and bags I have. Instead, I have started to spend on beauty treatments regularly, I've just had a new set of nails and had my first botox. Monthly, I go to the hairdresser get a Hollywood wax, lash lift and HD brows.

Mothwingdust · 24/06/2023 18:41

I don’t like shopping or online shopping. I do now buy my Clinique make up online when on offer. So bought moisturiser and a couple of things last May bank holiday as they had an offer on.

I buy stuff when it needs replacing or if I have an event. It’s not a money issue.

lindyloo57 · 24/06/2023 18:51

I started this year to buy less but better, I am buying better but even though most have been in the sale, ( my weakness) I have spent more. So hopefully the better quality will last longer.

CorneliaStreet · 24/06/2023 19:20

Probably about twice a week, maybe once if I’m actively trying to be good. Not clothes so much, mainly perfume, skincare and make up. I have a big stash of all these things now, so it needs to stop.

continentallentil · 24/06/2023 22:23

It totally depends on your budget OP.

if it gives you pleasure and you can afford it and use it there’s nothing wrong with it

WeightInLine · 24/06/2023 22:29

I buy clothes or jewellery less than once a month. I’ve only brought three items this year: a bad weather coat for work; a sweat top and trainers.

I am a huge advocate of buying expensive stuff and wearing it often to make it worthwhile. I have a clothes saving account so I usually have the funds saved if I see something nice.

I have to be prepared to wear the stuff a lot though. I wear the same earrings almost everyday and won’t buy any jewellery in 2023. I only ever have two nail varnishes on the go. I rarely buy make up just have one each of mascara, foundation etc. I spend a lot of time deciding what I want to order, and love the decision making.

Chewbecca · 24/06/2023 22:33

I used to buy something most weeks. Clothes normally, a new top, shoes, jeans, a dress, occasionally make up.

I stopped work this year though. I don't need work stuff anymore and have had a huge clear out and tidy up of my wardrobe. I'm shifting all the clothes I have worn to a new section and trying to dress from the unworn section. Eventually I will get rid of the unworn clothes if I find I keep not wanting to wear them. That was the original plan but the unexpected extra result is I have massively cut down buying new stuff! Years of over buying I think. I have bought a handful of items this year, I reckon 2 trousers, 1 jumper, 3 tops and 1 sandals but that is significantly less than I used to. Feel much better for not shopping too.

DelurkingAJ · 24/06/2023 22:34

Not very often. DH occasionally prods me into getting something I’m muttering about. If it’s much more than £10 it needs deliberation. And I earn very good money….but I have so much stuff. I was considering buying a pair of Levi’s and then searched through my drawers and found that a pair I put away as tight after I had DS1 now fit beautifully. So I think I’m reasonable in my tightness.
