Aibu to ask for help (again)?

I now have chub rub shorts. I’m looking for a dress that doesn’t look too awful. Loose, flowing, not sleeveless… I quite like the dress I’ve added a picture of but it’s sold out. I think maxi, nothing with a waist…. I have a really enormous waist.

I really, really want to buy a dress from an actual shop (or online if I can return it to an actual shop). So M&S, Next, Boden supermarkets etc.

Please help and send me actual links that you think look like good options - really massive bonus points if they are actually dresses you have and you’re also quite short like me.

Thank you all!!!

Depending on where you live and what price range you are willing to go to but Sahara London does some gorgeous dresses that looks flattering. I have several of their dresses and am often complimented on them. I live near one of their shops and often get some amazing discounts as I don't care its end of season .

Sainsbury's have lovely maxi dresses up to size 26 I think

I love Tescos selection (I'm a size 22). Off topic, where did you get your chub rub shorts? The ones I've bought always ride up in the leg which defeats the purpose!

Tesco have some lovely clothes, their dresses are so pretty but I find they're a bit skimpy with material.
Your clothing on the other hand are very generous I'm a 22 and have just bought a shirt top in a size 18 and that's still on the generous size.

I like Roman, Very, Simply be. Once I hit 50 I felt that I should up my budget slightly. I'll be honest, I've had bits from Shein. I like patterned kimonos over plain dresses, or vise versa.

An advert came up on SM for Roman.
Being a bit cautious and checking reviews online they weren't very good at customer service or sizings which put me off which is a shame as they had some really lovely items.

@Enko I also have a Sahara near me and have never ventured in. I’ll go and have a look!

I’d second Live Unlimited from John Lewis. I usually buy a load of stuff online, click and collect, try on in store and leave behind what you don’t want in store.

FannyFanackerpan · 13/06/2023 23:44

White Stuff (online via John Lewis) also go up to size 24. Seasalt can also be good although some of the dresses are a bit Sunday School Teacher!

Just ordered this so will let you know

I like Fatface Simone dresses, I have 4 and because they are in different prints they look quite different from each other. Some have a inset lace strip near the hem and in the sleeves, with a slightly different fabric or a border below it.

They also have large pockets.

The normal ones are above the knee on me (5’ 4”): I’d prefer the sleeves to be slightly longer but they are OK as they are. The longer length dresses are longer in the sleeve, too.

I haven’t tried to buy instore, but I wear a size smaller in Fatface than Next or M&S so their size 20 may be fine for you.

@usertumster glad the links are working now!

wheresmymojo · 14/06/2023 06:50

You really want one that comes in at the waist otherwise I'm afraid they look like tents and make people look much bigger than they are (said as another size 22)

i’ve just bought this and it’s gorgeous, so flattering. It comes in other designs too. Apricot have quite a few designs that are flattering with capped sleeves, skimming fabrics etc.

I like that!

What sort of fabric is it?

It looks like it could be that fabric that can be a bit sweaty?

Try on when you do and look around the shop near me has a basement thats where their bargains are.

Their style can look like they will appear like tents but they are cut so differently once they are on they are very flattering so try on
It was due to a shop assistant insisting I try one of their bubble shaped dresses I ended up a fan. She said this will really flatter your figure and she was right.

Most other places I put on a dress with no waist detail and I look large but not with their style and they are soooo comfortable and wash again and again. (Just not cheap when new).

Zebracat · 14/06/2023 07:56

Because I am cheap, and also always expecting imminently to lose weight, I star5 any search in the Next Clearance section. There are currently 382 dresses in a size 22. This is a bargain

I know you said you didn't want to purchase online, but City Chic on eBay and Secret Sales are currently having a clearance and everything is £8. I've recently bought two coats and three dresses from them - the coats are £120 and the dresses £90 on Very currently so the savings are huge. And the quality is beautiful!

They have some stunning maxi dresses and at that price they're definitely worth a gamble. That said everything I've had is gorgeous!

This is my comfiest dress this year:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B097RNTNZC?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

It’s jersey, stretchy and generous sizing, just reaches my ankles, slight waist to it but also nice and loose. Plus the black one is so easy to dress up or down.

I've found that issue this year re sizing. I'm both a size 14 and 12 in the same dress, just different pattern. Sign up and they often do at least 25% off.

FixItBotchIt · 14/06/2023 17:20

I'm not a massive fan of my snag tights chub rub shorts as they have the seem right down the belly button line. I do really like my M&S one's though....if they roll up on the leg then try a bigger size as I have found this solves the problem...
