Quiet luxury: am I the only one who is sick of this aesthetic?

I appreciate that paying for good quality makes financial sense in the long run but blinking heck I am sick of hearing about it. Am I the only one?

The whole thing can be summed up in one saying - buy cheap buy twice. It’s a very old saying and if you haven’t heard that you’ve probably be buying twice this whole time.

BigSkies2022 · 02/06/2023 17:42

Far from being sick of it, I'm still busy saving up to buy into it. I've got a spreadsheet and everything! Every time I manage to add a bit of burnt caramel silk this or taupe cashmere that to my 'robe I feel my pleasure and smugness just inch up that bit more.

😂😂

LadyAstor · 02/06/2023 19:29

I've never heard the term but isnt it just 'minimalist' and 'norm core' with a nod to the 'capsule wardrobe' idea?

Hidinginaonesie · 02/06/2023 19:30

midsomermurderess · 02/06/2023 17:20

Why join a thread only to say I haven't a clue what you're talking about? First two out of the traps, I don't know what you mean. Just bloody odd. People just wanting to bump their gums I suppose.

Don’t be so silly. The actual title of the op. asks,
”am I the only one who is sick of if?”
It’s totally relevant, therefore, for posters to say they’ve never even heard of it.
duh.

Quiet luxury is not "buy the best quality you can afford".

It means "buy this plain black t-shirt from x store [because there are acceptable and unacceptable quiet luxury stores, of course] for $450. Nobody but the cognoscenti will know that this cost $450 and came from x store, rather than $12 and came from Zara, because only the cognoscenti will know to look for a tiny emblem on the back hem around the left hip in exactly the same shade of black but slightly more matt to signify this is the $450 shirt and not the $12 version".

It's not even inverse snobbery. It's outright snobbery and disdain from those who find plebeian expensive stuff not exclusive enough.

This is a perfect explanation.

dempseyb · 02/06/2023 19:34

There's always thread so about how to look expensive, that's quiet luxury. I also don't think you can do it on the cheap like the Guardian says unless you have basics down eg hair, teeth, skin etc

Hidinginaonesie · 02/06/2023 19:36

I have lots of friends who do the quiet luxury thing. Waste of money if you ask me. They’re only impressing each other. I’m more impressed by a bargain 🤣

LunaTheCat · 02/06/2023 19:37

I was boarding a flight to Debai once ( flying to Southern Hemisphere so not stopping). There was a couple behind be… they both had LV cabin luggage, he was wearing a heavily branded 5-shirt. She carried a Chanel bag, another branded 5 shirt… basically everything they worse had a logo on it. She was sporty very over filled lips… it was horrific ( they could have been lovely people but you couldn’t tell the person underneath all the bloody logos) . But… boarding in economy just like me 🙄. They where the opposite of quiet luxury.

LunaTheCat · 02/06/2023 19:37

Sorry.. Dubai.

dempseyb · 02/06/2023 19:38

The Row & GP is the epitome of it.

The question was ‘are you sick of it?’. So I think it’s fair enough to reply that I haven’t heard of it.

dempseyb · 02/06/2023 19:40

No it is not about buying good quality clothes🙄

Yes the point is it's not about good quality leather shoes, it's good quality leather shoes from an obscure brand that cost 1k.

dempseyb · 02/06/2023 19:43

Basically, it's the billionaires distancing themselves from the multi-millionaires.

yep

guessing it’s the opposite of ‘buy cheap buy twice’, which is sensible if you can afford it, but it’s not really an aesthetic is it? Just wearing good quality but not ‘trendy’ clothes.

Buying cheap twice actually works out a lot cheaper than buying expensive at about 10 times the price.

Emotionalstorm · 02/06/2023 20:28

I'm sick of quiet luxury too. I enjoy buying fast fashion and clothes and bags with big logos.

Pigtailsandall · 02/06/2023 20:31

I've heard about it, possibly because I'm a huge Succession fan, but not to the point of being inundated. The clean, simple minimalist look appeals to me as a building block for more exciting items/looks. However, the ridiculously expensive items themselves are so far beyond my lifestyle or income that it's very abstract as as aesthetic to me

DuesToTheDirt · 02/06/2023 20:45

I've never heard of it, though there are lots of threads on here by people wanting to look classy - is that the same thing?

Personally, I have zero interest in looking quiet, luxurious or classy, so perhaps it's not surprising I've not heard of this...

knobheeeeed · 02/06/2023 21:17

I hadn't heard of it either. The OP asked if she was the only one sick of it, I think it's relevant that several people have said "never heard of it". That means there are a lot of people who aren't sick of it because they don't even know what it is and it obviously isn't as ubiquitous as the OP thinks it is because there are a lot of people saying they don't know what it is.

'clean girl aesthetic'

I’ve heard of clean girl aesthetic but not ‘quiet’ is it the same?

LolaSmiles · 02/06/2023 21:27

I prefer the quiet luxury look to the death by logos and monogrammed clothing look.

It seems silly to me to spend £500 on a t shirt that's no better quality than another very good quality t shirt purely to show to your equally image-conscious social bubble that you can, but do think there's merit in buying the best quality you can afford.

MathsNervous · 02/06/2023 21:32

Successstory82 · 02/06/2023 17:22

Because if you’ve never heard of something
and someone says they are “sick of it”

you wouldn’t be intrigued to find out what it is ?

Exactly 👏

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2023 21:33

I bet the 'never heard of it' contingent are feeling very proud of never having heard of it.

I'm not. I'd just never heard the expression 'quiet luxury'. Now I know what it is, well it's hardly new or rocket science, is it? Buying expensive, good quality, subtle clothes has been a mark of classy wealth for a very, very long time. I like that look.

Forgetmenott · 02/06/2023 21:57

Quiet luxury has always been a thing. It’s about wearing simple and high quality designer clothes without the logo. Those who know, know. Those who don’t know, don’t matter. Royalty and the elite have always done this, but recently it’s filtered down to those who are merely rich.

dempseyb · 02/06/2023 23:29

What's the difference between the elite & the rich?
