Quiet luxury: am I the only one who is sick of this aesthetic?

I appreciate that paying for good quality makes financial sense in the long run but blinking heck I am sick of hearing about it. Am I the only one?

OP posts:
Mamette · 02/06/2023 17:42

The thing is you can spend a fortune on good quality things that will actually last forever but still get bored of them after a couple of seasons.

I think it’s really just a trend of buying designer items without logos on them. It’s not really a frugality exercise.

BigSkies2022 · 02/06/2023 17:42

Far from being sick of it, I'm still busy saving up to buy into it. I've got a spreadsheet and everything! Every time I manage to add a bit of burnt caramel silk this or taupe cashmere that to my 'robe I feel my pleasure and smugness just inch up that bit more.

Annasgirl · 02/06/2023 17:42

Oh and all clothes are shades of beige, off white, navy or camel! And all sweaters are cashmere.

Flippersmum · 02/06/2023 17:44

Is this the same aesthetic as in all the threads about how to look expensive?

stayathomer · 02/06/2023 17:47

Just looked up the clean girl aesthetic. I think it would look awful on most people!

thedevilinablackdress · 02/06/2023 17:56

As with most trends, the best thing to do is dip into it if it takes your fancy, or let it pass by if it doesn't.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 02/06/2023 17:58

Another one who has never heard of it, and I spend a lot of time on S&B.

notacooldad · 02/06/2023 17:58

Never heard of the term.

I’ve just done the same as I’ve also never heard of that (or the term quiet luxury), and in my opinion, it just looks awful. Well, the images that came up when I googled do. Obviously the girls themselves aren’t awful but what I saw just seemed harsh and ‘overdone’. This picture for example. I’m not in any way mocking the person; she’s beautiful..it’s just the after picture just seems to remove the person’s individual features and ‘quirkiness’.

I too hadn’t heard of the term quiet luxury but I find it an interesting discussion. I have heard of the boots theory though.

RoysSisterShireeSauce · 02/06/2023 18:08

I think Succession and the ‘ludicrously capacious’ bag has made quiet luxury a trend or talking point so we’re seeing and hearing it more.

Froffycoffee · 02/06/2023 18:12

Spending a fortune on quiet luxury is supposed to be dead classy, but actually I think it’s sort of gross. There is something vulgar about the dog-whistle of very rich people dressing in a code that only other very rich people will recognise

What does this even mean?

Spudlet · 02/06/2023 18:13

I just made the mistake of looking at Loro Piana after reading that Guardian article, and now I’m being followed around the internet by ludicrously overpriced baseball caps. The cheapest one on there is £355… looks very similar to the £10 one I got from Go Outdoors 😏

jay55 · 02/06/2023 18:16

Vulgar as it is I much prefer the uniform of rappers, whose clothes shout their wealth. The bling and brightness is entertaining to look at, even if I wouldn't wear it myself.

The Steve jobs don't want to spend time picking an outfit look is boring, and meant to be.

Spudlet · 02/06/2023 18:17

Oh; and the trainers are about £800-ish and look rather like they came from Hotter. Not that there’s anything wrong with Hotter trainers, but I’m not sure I’m going to adopt them as a style beacon tbh.

Polis · 02/06/2023 18:20

Are people being facetious saying not heard of this?

No. Never heard of it until I read this thread title.

catsnhats11 · 02/06/2023 18:23

LittlePampelmouse · 02/06/2023 17:21

I bet the 'never heard of it' contingent are feeling very proud of never having heard of it. You can just kinda feel it in the thread, you know? I think that never having heard about the quiet luxury trend might become a trend in itself at this rate.

Ive never heard of it either.
But! I think I know what you refer to. Wasn't there a youtube thing where tons of young women were obsessing over a 'tidy' look? I'm sure I'm not imagining it - it involved wearing a very tightly pulled back ponytail with not a single stray hair. It was quite intriguing.

Nope I've just genuinely never heard of it, wasn't being facetious or smug. I assumed that by posting that I'd not heard it I might read more explanations about what it is. Having read the posts, yes I now get the gist, it's just an existing concept rebranded and made trendy right.

Ohpleeeease · 02/06/2023 18:25

I gave up ludicrously capacious bags when I could no longer lift them because of what I had crammed in.

Is quiet luxury what our mothers used to call classic?

Screamingabdabz · 02/06/2023 18:27

I’ve heard of it - and I may be just poor and jealous, but I think it’s about basic, dull, overpriced clothes that happen to look amazing because people are expensively and subtly toned, tanned, groomed, botoxed, jewelled and have butter perfect expensive hair highlights, designer shades and are papped against a boogie backdrop. They could wear a swishy sack and it would be ‘understated luxe’.

BigSkies2022 · 02/06/2023 18:28

@Screamingabdabz - I dunno what 'butter perfect' is, but I love it! I want all my stuff to be butter perfect, sounds gorgeous.

Lol at "how can you not have heard of this phenomenon? Surely you're being facetious and just pretending it has completely passed you by?"
🤣🤣🤣
As major world events go, it's pretty minor.

sheworemellowyellow · 02/06/2023 18:34

Quiet luxury is not "buy the best quality you can afford".

It means "buy this plain black t-shirt from x store [because there are acceptable and unacceptable quiet luxury stores, of course] for $450. Nobody but the cognoscenti will know that this cost $450 and came from x store, rather than $12 and came from Zara, because only the cognoscenti will know to look for a tiny emblem on the back hem around the left hip in exactly the same shade of black but slightly more matt to signify this is the $450 shirt and not the $12 version".

It's not even inverse snobbery. It's outright snobbery and disdain from those who find plebeian expensive stuff not exclusive enough.

sheworemellowyellow · 02/06/2023 18:34

Basically, it's the billionaires distancing themselves from the multi-millionaires.

bussteward · 02/06/2023 18:47

I have heard of it, but I followed the Gwyneth optometrist ski trial even more closely than Wagatha Christie.

If I had pots of money I’d be all over it. It’s entirely my thing – in my head. The reality of being a short, bosomy person with curly hair and glasses is that lots of it wouldn’t suit me at all. The expectation/reality thing. I WANT to wear expensive shapeless Toast linen dresses, but I look like a misshaped loaf in a bakery bag. Cheap and cheerful vintage suits me better. Which is GUTTING. Gwyneth would scorn me.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/06/2023 19:03

I had never heard of it before - but having read the article it's almost the opposite of the MN looks expensive threads . It's like the ultra rich being able to sneer at the wannabe's in their chain store beige cashmere because although MN told them it would 'look expensive', they know that it's not because they recognise clothing in their specific 'allowed' labels even though there is no visible branding .

TheCreamTeaWasFromMe · 02/06/2023 19:07

I like the idea of understated chic but I have zero interest in labels - whether that's something blingy and in-your-face, or something that only the jeunesse dorée would recognise.

I'm too short and barrel-shaped to tuck t-shirts in, and far too clumsy and mucky to make a habit of wearing pale colours. Anything white/cream is guaranteed to see me slopping coffee down my front.

I read somewhere that dressing constantly in white or pale colours à la Geri Horner, is a symbol of wealth. On the basis that the wearer doesn't worry about doing anything practical in them - because they have nannies and cleaners and gardeners - and is certainly not responsible for laundry and stain removal!
