Just popping on to see how everyone is. I have been selected for jury duty so am juggling that plus work, so a bit busy just now! Cute dress @NotQuiteUsual - I too remember C&A - I think it’s still around in Europe, I remember one in either Prague or Krakow a few years ago.

EllaPaella · 14/07/2023 10:31

Sounds busy @Purplecatshopaholic hope it's not too bad a trial.
Just dropped off two pairs of jeans to be altered so they fit perfectly over the bum and waist, what a revelation! Two pairs altered will still be cheaper than one new pair.

Thank you for the compliments on the shirt.

Very interesting idea @EllaPaella , I would love to know the answer as well. When you say "easy" @Puddinandpie , it makes me think of all the jeans I have missed out on wearing and enjoying because I didn't know that they could be altered so readily.

It's been raining cats and dogs all morning here,

Today:
Wrap cardigan: Liz Devy
Skirt: myleene Klass
Tights : Sainsbury's Grin

@Purplecatshopaholic that sounds stressful!

@HorribleHisTories15 there are 2 ways of sorting your jeans out with regards to waist and hips, first is unstitching on the back seam or the front where the buttons are, down about 6 inches from the waist, once that is done stip out unwanted amount, but make sure to keep it neat and tidy, then stitch back up following the line of which they were previously stitched and voilà done or if its just the waist that's the issue add a small but very stretchy amount of elastic inside the jeans at the back and stitch in (I had to use both these methods for my skirt as I wanted a really snug fit around my bump!) It sounds more fiddly than what it actually is😁 also you defo need a sewing machine that can handle denim!

Puddinandpie · 14/07/2023 14:00

Snip not stip autocorrect 😑

Puddinandpie · 14/07/2023 14:01

@HorribleHisTories15 forgot to say you look lovely today😊

The only advice I would add to @Puddinandpie @HorribleHisTories15 is to get a foot for your sewing machine that can handle denim as it’s incredibly bulky and most of the ones that come with your machine won’t handle it (needlework o level was worth its time and effort!).that way you may not need to upgrade your machine

EllaPaella · 15/07/2023 10:43

Sadly I don't have a sewing machine anymore.. I did have one inherited from my Grandmother but gave it to my sister a few years back. I should probably get a new one and teach myself how to see properly as it would be great to be able to tailor my own clothes.

EllaPaella · 15/07/2023 10:46

Love the shirt @Sooverthemill
It's a very warm morning here with intermittent sunshine popping through. We had full on rain and winds last night so hoping it at least stays dry today. At the moment i'm in denim shorts and a white T shirt but I'm out later for drinks and food with friends so it very much depends on the weather what I'll wear.

Puddinandpie · 15/07/2023 11:10

@Sooverthemill a normal sewing machine unfortunately won't handle denim, it will break the entire foot lever as its not powerful enough to force through the denim, the machine would need to be heavy duty so the engine is bigger and also the needles need to be purposely for denim, a simple change of presser foot won't cut it unfortunately! That's why I said about a sewing machine that can handle denim! I deal with heavy duty materials nearly everyday when I make whatever is needed/wanted for the orders I recieve, bags, clothes, curtains, throws etc all with lovely heavy duty fabric😁

Puddinandpie · 15/07/2023 11:18

@EllaPaella you should defo invest, sewing machines are brilliant even if its just to take small items up here and there, its just soooo handy to have better than sitting for 10mins trying to thread a needle🤣
glad you sorted your trousers!

HorribleHisTories15 · 15/07/2023 21:59

Wow @Puddinandpie , for the non sewing blessed amongst us, that seems like a lot of work. I may just take any roomy jeans to the seamstress/ tailor. I don't think that I would have the foggiest as to where to start. But thank you, in all honesty you have emphasised and reminded me that it is skilled work that requires talent. I think that some people really do have a talent for materials and clothes (like @Sooverthemill who makes incredible clothes and is so modest about them) .

OublietteBravo · 16/07/2023 07:46

Aww thanks @HorribleHisTories15 . Wearing hand knitted jumper today but hoping to take it off and reveal the bright green tee under! It’s sooo windy

@Puddinandpie i’ve hemmed jeans on my John Lewis sewing machine with just a foot suitable for denim but maybe I’ve just been lucky. Hens aren’t very big I guess? I don’t do heavy duty stuff often and rarely get out my machine nowadays anyway as I don’t have the time

Puddinandpie · 16/07/2023 10:14

@Sooverthemill no hems are pretty straightforward and usually only 2 layers, if your doing seams it's about 4layers by the time you've doubled over! Just be careful your not pounding away at your machine and over time bending the foot lever and always make sure you have a denim needle as breakage of needles with denim can cause a variety of issues, clogged bobbin housing and again bent foot lever, there's nothing worse than going to sew something Fairly light and easy after sewing heavy fabric and the machine just not playing ball! Great tip, always listen to your sewing machine if it sounds rickety or ticky somethings wrong! That's enough nuggets of wisdom for one day😁

@OublietteBravo have a great holiday
@Greyhairwarmheart such a pretty skirt

HorribleHisTories15 · 16/07/2023 17:17

Another adorable jumper @Sooverthemill

Sooverthemill · 16/07/2023 19:48

Thanks @Puddinandpie i rarely use my machine. Did needle work o level though in the 70s and used to make my work suits and coats back in the day. I used to love using vogue designer patterns....

Puddinandpie · 16/07/2023 21:15

@Sooverthemill that sounds fab, I bet they were lovely 😍 no matter how hard I try I can't get on with patterns, I wish I could, but the attention span isn't there unfortunately 🙈

Greyhairwarmheart · 17/07/2023 06:55

Thanks very much @Puddinandpie . Yesterday top fat face, trousers BHS. These very lightweight chinos are ideal for the changeable weather.
