How can I make this more sophisticated?

pompypomppomp · 21/05/2023 21:54

What accessories can I add to make this more interesting and more sophisticated? I was thinking a nice jumper over the the shoulders? But what colour? And what shoes? Ahhhh
It's for a v posh restaurant dinner and drinks

I don't think posters astonished at OP being called a prostitute or 'freely available' for wearing pretty standard young women's wear are being hysterical. Rather the opposite. I go to many posh restaurants in London and see young women wearing everything from figure hugging dresses to the oversized look. DD wears all sorts.

S and B these days is all about suggesting obscure £500 German dresses that most of us can't afford.

verdantverdure · 22/05/2023 14:11

I'd be living in fear of fake tan rubbing off and discolouring the dress or getting my dinner down it.

I think I might be old and practical

Ummmm you wash fake tan off after a few hours as the colour has developed, you shouldn’t be getting fake tan marks on anything if you do it properly!

Stravaig · 22/05/2023 14:24

I tend toward practical too!

For 'v posh', I think fabric quality first of all. If you're on a budget, then white is the hardest colour to pull off, the cheap synthetic has nowhere to hide.

White for a meal where you want to impress means care expended not spilling anything.

The skirt will ride up as you sit down, and when you stand up again that huge slit will be even higher than it already is. The skirt is tight, which leaves you visibly tugging it down.

A low cleavage will be easy to look down by any taller person seated close to you, and by everyone serving you. OP says small breasts mean more coverage, but is it enough more?

A bodycon dress limits opportunities for gluttony stomach expansion.

Exaggerated long sleeves will be a nuisance to stop trailing in the food.

All of this is before the fact that blatantly sexy will never be interesting or sophisticated, which is what OP said she wanted to convey.

This is one of those threads 🤣

Agreed, I think ultimately it comes down to people's interpretation of the word sophisticated.

If op is happy wearing the dress then that's all that matters.

MessyBunny · 22/05/2023 14:31

I just returned from
a holiday and lots of the young women wore these dresses in various lengths, just below the knee was popular. They looked stunning on the very slim women. None of them looked like prostitutes.

Christ

tell me you’re not 21 without telling me you’re not 21

NatashaDancing · 22/05/2023 14:36

A long loose raincoat worn open over a short dress can look sophisticated. Obviously OP would take that off in the restaurant.

BBNoM · 22/05/2023 14:42

@NatashaDancing like a flasher?! 😂

Mars27 · 22/05/2023 14:53

Is the dinner on Love Island?

pompypomppomp · 22/05/2023 15:01

@aNewYorkerInLondon great thanks for your worldly advice. How about as an experiment- I'll wear it and note down how many men come up to me asking my prices and how far I'll go with them. Hey, maybe I'll even take one up on their offer if I'm getting bit low on drinks money💸 then I'll report back my findings for everyone! With it being an over the knee dress, hopefully they assume I'm "clean" and I can get myself a higher rate 🤗

You have come to the wrong forum 😂if its not a frumpy shapeless sack then you quite literally get accused of looking like a hooker 😂
I think you will look fab. You probably wont need another layer on top as you will be too warm.
I think some statement earrings, or a diamante choker necklace as somebody else said would look stunning.

verdantverdure · 22/05/2023 15:08

Doesn't fake tan just dye the top later of skin cells, which then can be rubbed off by clothing?

I don't use self tanner but it's a thing I've seen.

pompypomppomp · 22/05/2023 15:10

Thanks all for some great advice and compliments. I didn't expect so many to have an opinion on such a trivial matter! I think it's made me realise that I'm not so bothered about looking sophisticated as I thought! And I do love the understated sexyness of the dress.

I'm not bothered about my tummy sticking out after I've eaten either, that's so normal, I don't think anyone cares irl.

This thread did give me a good chuckle

I think everyone is being weirdly awful. You have small boobs so the dress will not look like this on you. It will look less Club and more dinner on you. It's a fitted cream dress. Wear an oversized blazer. It will be nice

You wash the top layer off in the shower and it leaves your skin stained so it doesn't transfer :)

It's basically a high street version of a Roland Mouret dress, many versions of which have been seen in pretty much every high end restaurant for like 20 years, so I don't quite get the horror.

I think you'll look great, OP. I agree with the advice to keep everything else pretty minimal, let the dress and your bod do the talking - don't do matching earrings and necklace! Just choose one or the other. And keep shoes and bag simple. It has long sleeves, so you shouldn't be cold, and if you are, a cocktail or two usually helps 😅

pompypomppomp · 22/05/2023 15:45

@Mummyford probably because high street=cheap= prostitute to some people. Thank you! With the weather being how it is I don't think I'll need anything over it. I'm v excited now

I'm pretty sure my nipples would rest right on that neckline

I’m pretty sure my nipples would be dangling down by the slit in the knee Grin

The Galaxy dress looks nothing like that.

Why? Why do you think only jealousy makes someone dislike that dress? I don't like it. I don't think it's a nice dress. I wouldn't have worn anything like that even when I was a size 6.

It doesn't need anything over it. There's no point in wearing it if you're going to put a MN approved blazer on top of it.
