Dress for wedding guest who hates dresses

nicericey · 16/05/2023 19:19

I hate wearing dresses. I live in the same joggers and my work trousers and the same comfy t-shirts and shirts.

I have a posh wedding to go to. I need something nice to wear please help! I am size 14/16. I don't want anything that is tight- it can't be tight around my bum, my boobs or my tummy. It has to be nice fabric preferably cotton absolutely no static. I can just about cope with a tie around my waist. I must be able to go to the toilet easily. And wear a bra with straps. I need to be able to wear it with my boots or close toe shoes. Bonus points if it's long enough for me to wear without tights - I can tolerate them for the service and photos but that's about it.

I think it would look better with a headband rather than a fascinator, maybe something like this from Etsy

I agree that's fab.

Oh that also solves my hat dilemma- I can do hairbands!

Thank you all so much!

I'm a total convert to a jumpsuit since discovering how comfy so many of them are. Really soft and stretchy material. Honestly feels like I'm in my pyjamas whilst looking much fancier. Normally pockets too! Hot Squash have loads, also Jolie Moi and Phase Eight.

nicericey · 16/05/2023 21:47

I cannot jumpsuit. I need to wee and it's a posh wedding.

Trouser suit or culottes. I love culottes!

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/05/2023 22:07

Jumpsuit. You can see her a jersey type one that you pull down rather than zip. I've also got a couple of front zipper ones from next.

I've just got one from stitch fix that pulls down and am wearing it to a confirmation. It's from Editors Cut which I think might be their own brand though.

Also, jumpsuits only work if you have a shortish body. If you are long in the body they are uncomfortable and unflattering.

eggandonion · 16/05/2023 22:19

@nicericey I need a very similar outfit to you for July. And I have a do next month which I could double up on.
If you can go to hat rental places they are great at suggesting bands, fascinators and colours you might not think would work.

FloweryGardener · 16/05/2023 22:47

Oh sorry didn't RTFT

FelicityFlops · 17/05/2023 02:19

I your shoes I would not buy anything as you are unlikely to wear the outfit again. Are there any decent places to hire near you?

greenspaces4peace · 17/05/2023 02:45

@nicericey i spotted this a few days ago. it's a two piece: trousers and top
if you scroll to the bottom of the page there are different tops and jacket options to dress it up or down.
i'm curvy and their wide leg trousers are a nice generous cut.

Thank you that looks nice but I don't think I can handle viscose all over. (Sorry I know I sound like a right fusspot but it's a sensory thing). That sort of thing has made me think again about the trousers though. I was so convinced it had to be a dress!

I think if I buy a trouser suit like the hobbs one I would be able to wear that again. But yes good shout on the rental. I guess I'd feel a bit embarrassed going in with a list of my requirements.

I want an occasion to justify buying the Hobbs suit now. And I hate clothes shopping.

Either of these pairs of trousers would look amazing with a top & blazer, and they have elasticated waists

What about the mint green linen suit from M,&s . Loads in our store. I have the trousers in navy 16 and they are a great fit. You could definitely wear again. Wear with a navy silky top underneath.

NotMeNoNo · 17/05/2023 07:41

Just saw about stretch waist. If your budget extends to Jigsaw they have linen trousers with elastic in the back waist and matching jackets in a light green too, seems to be colour of the season.

Banoffeepie21 · 17/05/2023 07:48

That Hobbs suit looks really great!

Crikeyisthatthetime · 17/05/2023 09:03

I feel your pain OP. I went from shop to shop looking for an outfit for my daughter's wedding, I was nearly in tears because that look is just not me (and everything is made from polyester). Ended up with a cotton maxi dress from seasalt which you may feel is too casual for your do, I also had linen trousers as backup. Which is a roundabout way of saying, wear what suits you. My niece only wears trousers. For a smart event she wears smart trousers. Nobody expects different of her, it's who she is. That Hobbs suit is bang on.

Alvinne · 17/05/2023 09:03

Agree, go with the hobby blue suit OP it's lovely
