Dress for wedding guest who hates dresses

I hate wearing dresses. I live in the same joggers and my work trousers and the same comfy t-shirts and shirts.

I have a posh wedding to go to. I need something nice to wear please help! I am size 14/16. I don't want anything that is tight- it can't be tight around my bum, my boobs or my tummy. It has to be nice fabric preferably cotton absolutely no static. I can just about cope with a tie around my waist. I must be able to go to the toilet easily. And wear a bra with straps. I need to be able to wear it with my boots or close toe shoes. Bonus points if it's long enough for me to wear without tights - I can tolerate them for the service and photos but that's about it.

How about a Co-ord? Separate top and skirt that look like a dress when put together. This Reiss one is Linen. I’ve got a version from last year and wore it together for a wedding and have worn both the top and skirt separately for different things:

I'm a similar size & only tend to wear wear natural fabrics. I'm trying to find outfits for my dd's graduation in the summer. I've found a beige linen mix jacket & trousers in h&m that actually look much more expensive than they are. I'm planning on wearing these with a brown silk camisole & some sort of long necklace - picture 1.
Alternatively I also have this M&S cotton shirt dress in the lightest voile cotton. To be worn with navy espadrilles. This actually looks pretty dressy & is so cool & comfortable to wear.Picture 2

I'm the same as you. I bought this

Absolute bargain at £15 and it's very very flattering. Super comfy. Posh shoes, posh little bag done.

I wouldn’t totally rule out a jumpsuit OP. They look mush more feminine and flattering than a trouser suit and if not zipped up the back can be remarkably easy to get off.

Thank you all so much. You've given me the confidence to look at coords and that suit from hobbs is beautiful. I have hope now! I was beginning to despair!

I like the coord things but no I can't wear a jumpsuit sorry. I'd be worrying about it the whole time.

skirt and a plain coloured long sleeved top. I've been looking for a nice dress for ages and finally came to the realisation that the reason I can't find one is that I just don't find them comfy around my middle!

I have this dress, I'm a size 14 with boobs and it's really flattering on (better than on the model). Not sure what it's made of but I wore it on a very hot holiday last year and it was nice and cool and didn't stick to me.

Thank you but it's 100% viscose. Looks nice though.

Have you looked in Hobbs?

SparklyBlackKitten · 17/05/2023 23:22

Try pregnancy clothes. They are comfy and stretchy. And you dont have to wear a dress op. Its your choice what to wear 🙂

AliceMcK · 17/05/2023 23:59

Definitely trouser suite, I have relatives that don’t wear dresses or skirts, all big sizes, they always wear trouser suites with a blouse that covers the tummy so they can be as comfortable as they want.

Just looked at some photos of our last family wedding, one wore a pretty flowery blouse with black trousers, another worse, white blouse, lemon coloured jacket and slimmer trousers, another worse a more of a tunic style top with a belt over what I assume are leggings. Everything was wedding blinged with hair accessories and dos.

Desperatelywantinganother · 18/05/2023 08:17

Try Cos for trouser suits too. They have some cool linen ones is bright pink, green or violet at the moment (plus ordinary tan and black). The trousers are usually the super high waisted kind. The have elastic inside that’s more or invisible outside. They also sit so high that it’s likely to be above the area of your stomach that might feel bloated or uncomfortable - they come up to your ribs basically.

Unfortunately I think the Hobbs suit, lovely as it is, is going to crease like a MoFo.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 18/05/2023 08:31

I'd also look at, well I'm not sure what they are called, but duster coats/dress coats? They give you that smart formal thing in one hit and can be worn over less dressy clothes. But as others have said, I wouldn't think about buying new for something you might only wear once or twice. I'd search for the more upmarket brands on vinted - there are streams of dresses and coats that have been 'worn once for a wedding'. I got some dress trousers for £10 that cost around £180 new (how - I mean they are lovely, comfortable, don't crease etc but for that price they'd also need to make me taller and slimmer)

Firsttimenannie · 18/05/2023 09:22

In Sainsbury’s this week they had some elasticated wide leg floral trousers, they were lovely, in different lengths too. They would look great with a blazer ( which are everywhere this year) and a plain top. Well within budget and not a massive expense if you don’t wear them again. (Not frumpy or old fashioned, I was with my 30 year old DIL who is going to buy them)

if not try a long dress, many of them are not fitted, so you can relax, they will also cover your feet. It’s perfectly on trend to wear any footwear you feel comfortable in.

Catspyjamas17 · 18/05/2023 13:13

I quite like the "Co-ords" that are around now, some with loose shirts and wide leg trousers that look like fancy pjs but I think they can be amazing in the right fabric. Here is a more tailored style.
